Chapter 422: Engagement chaos (12)

At present, complete silence had fallen in the room. Nuwa’s horrific encounter with Jielun and her subsequent escape brought chills in every person that was hearing her ordeal.

It was from there when Syaoran continued to speak how he hid Nuwa with him all this time and that he was the one to arrange the fake news of a woman being found in a river.

Zihan turned to his brother and tremblingly knelt at his side. "Why didn’t you tell me, Bro?"

He didn’t even try to wipe his tears that slid down his cheeks as his body trembled. A flash of hurt could be seen in his eyes. He loved and respected his brother and though he couldn’t be any happier to see Nuwa alive, he didn’t understand why Syaoran would hide the fact from him.

Syaoran smiled. "You can go ahead and hate me, little brother. But the truth of the matter is that you weren’t strong enough to protect her."

He froze.

"This was more than thirteen years ago. You were barely entering politics. You didn’t even have a voice of your own because Mom would crush it with hers. Obviously she hated Nuwa and your love for her. But what would you have done about it? Were you powerful enough to go against our parents?"

"I would have-"

"Ran away with her? Built a new life with her?" Syaoran tilted his head. "And you think our parents would have allowed that? They were already disappointed with one son - weak, sick and helpless. Then another son loved a sex worker. You were the only one left for Mom to control. She would have wrecked havoc in your life."

"Syaoran!" Zhuo Meihui trembled hard. "How dare you throw mud at my face? I am your mother!"

Zihan’s expression turned frigid. "The same mother who forced her son to live in a separate house from us. The same mother who was so disgusted with Bro that you pushed him off the stairs to kill him. And then you have the audacity to say that you are his mother?"

His cold expression tightened. "You never loved us, Mom. Neither Bro, nor me. The only thing that you ever wanted is power and influence. Bro was too sick to lead the family so you discarded him like trash. And then you wanted to control me too. But I never thought that..."

He glanced at Nuwa who stood at her place, trembling.

"You will stoop so low to get rid of her."

Zihan shook hard. What Syaoran said was nothing but the truth. He wouldn’t have been able to protect Nuwa even if he had known. Zhuo Meihui’s hold was so strong that none could speak against her. None could stand against her.

But thirteen years later, the situation was different. Though his parents still held their influence and power, Zihan wasn’t the meek young man anymore that she could twist around her finger. Though he hated politics, he had grown far enough to make his own name that carried weight. He could stand toe-to-toe with them.

Jia held Syaoran’s gaze for a long moment and asked, "You hid her for all these years and today, you thought it was the right time to bring her in front of the world?"

Syaoran smiled. "I wanted to bring her in front of the world where both families would be present. But more than anything, I brought her here so that everyone could see that she is alive. So that before the assassins that Hou Anming sent to kill her, I could show to the world that she is alive."

"What!?"

Hou Huan reacted first with the ridiculous claim. "What assassins? Why are you accusing my son out of nowhere? He didn’t send any assassins!"

The crowd was just as confused. From Nuwa’s account, Anming was the same brother who had helped her escape so why would he hire hitmen to kill her now?

"Yes, that’s nonsense!" His wife, Hou Delan, breathed heavily too. She couldn’t understand why Anming fell under the spotlight suddenly.

Syaoran said, "I have been hiding Nuwa all this time so I quickly realized that somebody from the Hou family had figured out the truth that she wasn’t dead. So now they were making sure that she would be dead. Some of my able contacts were able to locate that assassin, who has received a hefty amount to get the job done. Right, Hou Anming?"

"This is ridiculous!" Hou Huan rushed toward Anming. "Anming, that cannot be true, right?"

Anming looked at her, calm and unfazed. He whispered. "I realized my mistake, Mom. I shouldn’t have helped her escape all those years ago. But when I learned that she was alive, I thought it was a chance to rectify my mistake."

Zhong Kai quickly intervened. "There are just too many things going on here. Mr. Zhuo, you cannot just blatantly accuse Mr. Hou of accusing an assassin with no evidence."

"You think I will say something like this without any evidence?" He smiled. "I have all the proof I need that will trace the money back to Hou Anming’s account."

"No...No, no!" Delan cried. "Anming has nothing to do with this!"

"But it’s his money and his assassin. I can call the hired hitman too if this isn’t enough for you."

Hou Huan threw a look of hatred toward him and Zhuo Meihui. Never once in her life had she thought that her son would cause such a nuisance for them. As if Nuwa suddenly appearing out of the blue wasn’t enough for her, her second son was on the verge of getting arrested.

Not my son!

"Anming did nothing! Nobody will even dare touch my son! I...I did it! I hired the assassin! Anming has nothing to do with it!"

Syaoran watched her in silence and a glint of smile formed in his eyes. The glint which made Jia also realize that this was probably part of his plan too and she knew why.

Accusing Anming was just a decoy. The real intention was for Hou Huan to come forward and take the blame herself. And he knew she would because Hou Huan was the complete opposite of Zhou Meihui.

Where his own mother discarded her son over being weak and sick, Hou Huan was the kind of mother who would go to any lengths to protect her sons. She was obsessed with them in a way Zhuo Meihui was obsessed with power.

Which is why she did everything that Jielun wanted to do. It didn’t matter to her how utterly wrong and deplorable it was, but she just wanted to make Jielun happy.

Which is also why she accepted Tengqi’s choice to marry Meng Rin, even though she opposed it. Tengqi was adamant and she didn’t want to lose him over some actress.

And which is why now, she came forward to protect Anming.

I finally caught you, Mrs. Hou, Syaoran smiled.

I think some butterflies...look more beautiful when their wings are clipped off.
