Chapter 63: Daddy? No! Sugar Daddy!

Lin Fan ran without direction, his chest tight, his breath uneven, anger and frustration boiling together into something hot and suffocating inside him.

He didn’t know how long he had been running, nor did he care.

His feet carried him forward while his mind replayed the same thoughts again and again, like a broken record he couldn’t shut off.

’Why did Sister Rui look down on Ye Ling like that?’

The image of her cold expression resurfaced in his mind, followed immediately by Ye Ling’s smiling face.

’Why did she say such terrible things about her?’

"My Ye Ling is so good to me," Lin Fan muttered under his breath as he slowed to a jog. "She’s gentle, considerate... she understands me."

His lips trembled as he spoke, as if saying the words out loud would make them truer.

"She would never—"

His thoughts cut off abruptly.

Lin Fan stopped in his tracks.

Ahead of him, beside the quiet lakeside path, sat a familiar figure on a wooden bench. The breeze stirred her long hair gently, sunlight reflecting off the water and outlining her slender silhouette. She was slightly hunched over her phone, thumbs moving quickly, a faint smile resting on her lips. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Lin Fan’s heart skipped.

"...Ye Ling?"

His eyes widened, disbelief and joy colliding in his chest. For a moment, the frustration, the anger, even the sting from earlier. All of it vanished.

’Why was she here?’

’Didn’t she say she was meeting her father today?’

His breathing slowed down, replaced by a warm, fluttering anticipation.

’Is this the meeting place?’

His steps instinctively moved forward, then stopped halfway.

Lin Fan hesitated, suddenly feeling nervous. He straightened his clothes unconsciously and wiped his palms on his pants.

’If she’s meeting her father... then this must mean. I can see my—’

A strange mix of excitement and anxiety rose in his chest. ’Future... father-in-law!’ The thought made his ears heat up.

’Let’s wait a little,’ he decided. ’I shouldn’t interrupt something so important.’

He found another bench a short distance away and sat down, pretending to look at the lake while stealing glances in her direction. Every few seconds, his eyes flicked back to Ye Ling.

’She looks happy today.’

Lin Fan smiled faintly.

’Maybe after today, things will get better. Once her father approves of me...’

His thoughts began to wander, slipping easily into those familiar fantasies.

In a modest apartment, Ye Ling was cooking while he helped awkwardly. They spent the holidays together. A quiet life. Nothing extravagant, just peaceful and harmonious.

That’s all he wants.

---

Minutes passed by before Ye Ling stood up all of a sudden.

Lin Fan also straightened immediately.

Ye Ling tucked her phone away and smiled softly, looking toward the path ahead.

’Is he here?’

Lin Fan’s heartbeat quickened, slightly nervous. He stood as well, keeping his distance but watching closely.

Soon, a man emerged from the trees lining the path.

He was short. Even shorter than Ye Ling, in fact. With a bald head that reflected the sunlight faintly. His posture was relaxed and confident, looking like someone who is in a prominent job.

’That must be him.’

Lin Fan exhaled in relief.

’He looks... well-maintained. Younger than I expected.’

For a brief moment, Lin Fan felt a twinge of envy for Ye Ling. It was not resentment, but longing. He had never known what a warm parent-child relationship looked like. Seeing Ye Ling rush forward, her face lighting up as she threw her arms around the man, stirred something complicated and painful in his chest.

’They look close. Is this what a father’s love looks like?’

’That’s good. That’s really good.’

His lips curved upward.

Then—His smile froze.

The man didn’t let go. Instead, he pulled Ye Ling closer.

’Too close.’

Their bodies pressed together, far beyond what was appropriate. Ye Ling tilted her head downward—

And they kissed.

Not a quick peck.

Not an affectionate greeting.

They kissed deeply, hungrily. The man’s hands roamed without restraint, gripping her waist, sliding downwards.

Ye Ling didn’t resist. She leaned into him, responding even more passionately.

Lin Fan’s mind went blank.

"...What?"

The world seemed to tilt.

’This... isn’t right.’

’This isn’t what a father does.’

His heart pounded violently as shock crashed into him, followed by something cold and nauseating. His legs moved before his mind could catch up.

"YE LING!!!"

Lin Fan’s shout echoed across the lakeside.

Ye Ling pulled back sharply, surprise flashing across her face. The man clicked his tongue, clearly annoyed at the interruption.

"Lin Fan..." Ye Ling said. There was a flicker of panic in her eyes, but it vanished almost instantly, replaced by calm indifference.

Lin Fan rushed forward, his face flushed red, words spilling out uncontrollably.

"Who is this man? Why are you kissing him?! Didn’t you say you were meeting your dad today? Were you lying to me? What are you hiding from me?! Answer m-me!"

His voice cracked on the last word.

Ye Ling inhaled slowly, as if steadying herself.

"Technically," she said coolly, "I didn’t lie to you."

Lin Fan’s breath hitched.

"He is my daddy!"

Those words landed like a slap.

"...Are you fucking kidding me?!" Lin Fan whispered, his expression twisting in disbelief.

Before Ye Ling could respond, the man chuckled.

"No, no, dude," he said seriously, an arm draped possessively around Ye Ling’s shoulders. "I am her daddy."

He paused. Then grinned. "Her sugar daddy. Hahaha."

The laughter echoed inside Lin Fan’s skull, sounding deafening and cruel.

"No... no, that’s not true..." Lin Fan shook his head violently, eyes bloodshot. "Ye Ling! Tell me this is a lie! Tell me!"

Ye Ling snorted and crossed her arms.

"Do I really need to spell it out for you?" she said impatiently. "Can’t you see it yourself?"

Her every word felt like a blade.

"What about me?" Lin Fan asked hoarsely. "Were you... just using me?"

She looked at him like he was beneath her need to explain.

"Don’t flatter yourself. You’re just one of the dogs I keep around." She leaned closer to the man. "Han Jie is the only one I love."

Han Jie smiled smugly and grabbed Ye Ling’s butt deliberately, as if to display ownership.
