Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Taking Her Home

Wang Xiuhua’s face immediately filled with gratitude.

"Thank you."

Without hesitating, Gu Jiaojiao ran back to the Qingshan Team. At this time of day, everyone was out in the fields. Since she didn’t know Zhao Tiezhu, she ran to the fields to ask around until she finally found him.

Gu Jiaojiao stood on higher ground and called out to Zhao Tiezhu. He looked confused but walked over anyway. Gu Jiaojiao quickly explained how Wang Xiuhua had fallen on the road and injured her leg.

Upon hearing this, Zhao Tiezhu immediately dropped his basket. He called out to his parents and then hurried off to borrow a donkey cart.

Uncle Zhao and Aunt Zhao rushed to inform the team leader before following as well.

Having run in such a rush, Gu Jiaojiao only let out a sigh of relief after delivering the message. It was only then that she realized how tired she was.

「Meanwhile, in the fields.」

Leng Yuan and Chen JianShe were assigned together again.

It was mainly because Chen JianShe had volunteered to go wherever Leng Yuan went. The team leader, with a wave of his hand, had simply assigned them to work together.

Chen JianShe was on the outside and Leng Yuan was on the inside. Chen JianShe saw Gu Jiaojiao run past them and immediately told Leng Yuan.

"Brother Leng, Gu Jiaojiao just ran that way. She looked really panicked. I hope nothing bad has happened!"

Hearing this, Leng Yuan tossed his basket to Chen JianShe. "I’m going to check on her."

He then stepped out of the cornfield and hurried after her.

Gu Jiaojiao had just stopped to rest for a moment and was about to head back. As she turned around, she saw Leng Yuan walking toward her, his face etched with worry. "What’s wrong? Did something happen?"

There was no faking the concern in the man’s eyes. Gu Jiaojiao immediately broke into a smile. "I came across Zhao Tiezhu’s wife who had fallen on the road and hurt her leg. I just went to notify the Zhao family."

Only then did Leng Yuan let out a sigh of relief. He noticed the fine beads of sweat on her forehead and how rosy her cheeks were. Her fair, delicate face seemed to glow in the sunlight, looking utterly radiant. Seeing her like this, his calm heart couldn’t help but flutter.

Noticing the bag still in Gu Jiaojiao’s hand, he took it from her. "Come on. I’ll walk you home."

Gu Jiaojiao tried to refuse, but he was already walking ahead, so she had no choice but to follow.

Leng Yuan saw Gu Jiaojiao home, telling her to get some rest before he headed back to work.

Gu Jiaojiao agreed with a smile. "I know. Don’t worry about me. I bought some meat and bones today, so I’m making bone soup for dinner tonight."

After reminding Gu Jiaojiao to take it easy at home, Leng Yuan went back to work.

Gu Jiaojiao didn’t rest, though. She washed her face, then went to the backyard to pick two tomatoes, a handful of greens, and some chives.

She planned to make noodle soup with the bone broth. Even though she didn’t have any white wheat flour, having cornmeal noodles to eat was already quite a treat.

While she was cooking, a little boy appeared at her doorway. Gu Jiaojiao went out to meet him, a puzzled look on her face.

"What is it, little one?"

The little boy was holding a fish. Upon seeing Gu Jiaojiao, he simply handed it to her and then ran off, not giving her any chance to refuse.

Gu Jiaojiao looked at the fish, placed it in a basin, and decided to wait for Leng Yuan to come home and deal with it.

That evening, Leng Yuan returned from work a bit late. The Qiushou harvest had already been underway for three days. All the corn had been moved to the threshing ground. Starting tomorrow, some of the workers would continue harvesting soybeans and rice from the fields, while the rest would be assigned to the threshing ground to thresh all the corn.

Once all the crops were harvested and the quota grain was delivered to the commune, there would be no more farm work left to do.

They could rest for the entire winter.

Winter was better in the north, as people could rest. In the south, however, they still had to work through the winter.

Gu Jiaojiao felt quite fortunate about this.

She brought the food out just as Leng Yuan finished his bath. The two of them sat down at the table, just about to eat. Gu Jiaojiao was about to mention the fish when there was a knock on the courtyard gate. She couldn’t help but wonder, ’Who could that be at this hour!’
