Chapter 57: Half-Human

White Rabbit cleaned her hands with a wet wipe and picked up the tongs again to continue roasting meat for everyone. โ€œFirst thing first, the Gu Familyโ€™s Village you visited was surrounded by a barrier, but rather than an isolated island, it was a small subspace under Li City.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s the difference?โ€ Gao Yang asked.

โ€œThe difference is that while the isolated islands can only be reached via official channels such as highways, airplanes, and high speed rails, the subspace can be reached with other means. Heavenly Dog is an awakener with a Space-Time Talent, allowing him to cut the space open momentarily so that we could enter the underground Gu Familyโ€™s Village.โ€

โ€œAh.โ€ Gao Yang thought for a moment. โ€œBut why are there two Gu Familyโ€™s Villages? An underground one in addition to the one above ground?โ€

โ€œGood question.โ€ White Rabbit gave him a thumbs-up. โ€œUnfortunately, I donโ€™t know either.โ€

โ€œ...โ€

โ€œLet me start from the beginning. Three years ago, our organization found the first Rune Circuitโ€”the Life-type one. It was the fourth Rune Circuit awakeners had ever found, and it was inside an underground space. I wonโ€™t go into the details. Just know that it was a similar situation with Gu Familyโ€™s Village.โ€

โ€œLast spring.โ€ White Rabbit threw Wu Dahai a rare appreciative glance. โ€œI lured Wu Dahai into the organization with my feminine wiles...โ€

โ€œHa, you said it!โ€ Wu Dahai slammed his chopsticks on the table. โ€œDonโ€™t you feel a pang of consciousness for leading on a pure-hearted boy like me?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t interrupt me.โ€ White Rabbit couldnโ€™t care less. โ€œAnyhow, Wu Dahai told me about the tragic happening at Gu Familyโ€™s Village and said that it could be related to Rune Circuits. I looked it up and found out it was indeed a strange case. A family of five was killed, followed by the disappearance of all villagers.โ€

โ€œWe sent our people to investigate the ruin of Gu Familyโ€™s Village. The first time, we encountered the hair monster like you did, and we were brought to the underground Gu Familyโ€™s Village. However, our people were stronger than you lot, and the hair monster fled once it realized it couldnโ€™t win. Then we stayed for another two days and found out all the information youโ€™ve found, but the hair monster never showed up again.โ€

White Rabbit glanced at Wu Dahai. โ€œWe visited the place a few more times to no avail. The hair monster was cunning. Knowing how much of a threat we were to it, it refused to show up. We concluded that the hair monster must have mutated after devouring a Rune Circuit.โ€

โ€œSo you used us?โ€ Officer Huang smiled bitterly.

โ€œYeah, itโ€™s hard to find the right people.โ€ White Rabbit batted her eyelashes. โ€œFirst, it had to be awakeners, but not those belonging to the other organizations since we couldnโ€™t trust them. Our best bet were free agents who didnโ€™t even know about Rune Circuits.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what we call awakeners who havenโ€™t yet joined any organization,โ€ Wu Dahai added.

White Rabbit continued, โ€œCouldnโ€™t be too strong, or the hair monster wouldnโ€™t show up. Couldnโ€™t be too weak, or the hair monster would kill everyone swiftly or notice it was a trap. Finally, there was one important thing...โ€

White Rabbit turned to Qing Ling and stroked her long, silky black hair. โ€œItโ€™d be best if the target had nice black hair. With its obsession with hair, the hair monster would be more likely to bite the bait.โ€

โ€œSo you picked the three of us.โ€ Officer Huang raised an eyebrow.

โ€œYep!โ€ White Rabbit grinned. โ€œYou were free agents and werenโ€™t too weak, making you the perfect bait. On top of that, you didnโ€™t know about Rune Circuits.โ€

โ€œWhat a devilish scheme,โ€ Officer Huang said, disgruntled.

โ€œSpeaking of this, Iโ€™d have to compliment Mr. Wu Dahai again!โ€ White Rabbit gave him a thumbs-up. โ€œHe was quite worried about you and told you specifically to bring more help. If you hadnโ€™t brought Fat Jun and Wang Zikai, things wouldโ€™ve turned out differently.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re an evil woman!โ€ Officer Huang said with begrudging respect. โ€œIโ€™m staying away from you from now on.โ€

โ€œHaha, I only ever throw outsiders under the bus, never my teammates.โ€ White Rabbit picked up a piece of potato for Officer Huang. โ€œAnd teammates are what we are now. Please take care of me.โ€

โ€œGo back to the Gu Familyโ€™s Village,โ€ Gao Yang urged.

โ€œAlright.โ€ White Rabbit nodded. โ€œAccording to what I know, what happened in Gu Familyโ€™s Village wasnโ€™t complicated. Simply put, Huaziโ€™s daughter-in-law, the woman who married into his family, had been devoured by an overtaker.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s an overtaker?โ€ Gao Yang zeroed in on the key point.

White Rabbit sighed. โ€œDear lord, you really know nothing. Youโ€™re lucky to have survived for this long!โ€

โ€œOvertakers are a type of greed monsters,โ€ Wu Dahai said. โ€œThere are two known types of greed monsters at the moment: freeriders, and overtakers.โ€

White Rabbit continued, โ€œAs the name would suggest, freeriders entered and hitchhiked in the human body as parasites at the price of their deaths. They coexist with the human, maintaining some sentience and capabilities. But all in all, the human remains the owner of the body.โ€

โ€œAh!โ€ Fat Jun spat out the meat he was chewing on and pointed at his own face. โ€œThatโ€™s me!โ€

โ€œWu Dahai told me about your condition. Thatโ€™s right. Your right hand is now a freerider.โ€

โ€œBodhisattva blesses me!โ€ Fat Jun felt a weight lifted off his shoulders. โ€œIโ€™m still human! Hooray!โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a shame that you arenโ€™t able to control the form and ability of your right hand yet. Please work hard on that!โ€ White Rabbit winked at Fat Jun with a smile. โ€œYouโ€™ll become an official member once you gain control of your right hand!โ€

โ€œYeah! Iโ€™ll prove that the organization is right to trust me!โ€ Fat Jun declared with renewed determination.

โ€œWake up, loser!โ€ Wu Dahai rained on his parade. โ€œOnce you become a valuable tool and sign your body to the organization, she wonโ€™t ever give you the time of day. Iโ€™ve been there myself.โ€

Fat Jun chuckled while touching his head. โ€œHaha, thatโ€™s fine.โ€

Wait, that doesnโ€™t make sense.

Gao Yang had been listening intently, and he realized something: if the white cat were a freerider, it shouldโ€™ve died after biting Fat Jun.

Yet the white cat showed up again later. Could those be two different cats? He filed that in his head and pushed the question aside for now. At least Fat Jun seemed fine at the moment.

โ€œIโ€™ll continue.โ€ White Rabbit went back to her original topic. โ€œAnother type of greed monsters are the overtakers. Basically, they enter and overtake the host bodies completely at the price of abandoning their own, turning into a brand new creature with the body of an awakener but the soul of a monster.โ€

Everyone quietly listened with rapt attention.

โ€œThe bride was an awakener who had been replaced by an overtaker,โ€ said White Rabbit. โ€œBiologically speaking, these overtaken awakeners are humans through and through. They can either choose to keep playing a monster, or abandon their past and live on as a human. We call someone like that a half-human.โ€

โ€œHalf-human.โ€ Gao Yang pondered the name. There seemed to be something profound about it.

โ€œThe half-human bride married into Huaziโ€™s family in Gu Familyโ€™s Village.โ€ White Rabbit sighed. โ€œAnd that night, she controlled everyone in the village to kill the entire family. You should know how she did it.โ€

โ€œWhy kill them though?โ€ Officer Huang asked.

Gao Yang came to a realization on his own. โ€œAre Huaziโ€™s family...all humans?โ€ novelbuddy.c(o)m

โ€œBingo!โ€

โ€œThat canโ€™t be!โ€ Officer Huang found that hard to believe. โ€œThe possibility is incredibly slim!โ€

Gao Yang was shocked as well, but he couldnโ€™t help being happy to learn that. Perhaps his family were all humans too. At least...it seemed more likely to be true now.

But then something nagged at him. โ€œBut it doesnโ€™t add up!โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ White Rabbit asked, knowing full well what he was going to say.

โ€œIf Huaziโ€™s Family were all awakeners, why would they lose to the half-human?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ White Rabbit nodded. โ€œIn theory, four awakeners should be able to defeat a half-human even when the half-human was empowered by a Rune Circuit. Worst comes to worst, they shouldnโ€™t have ended up slaughtered so easily and terribly. Moreover, why would four awakeners welcome a monster into the family? It didnโ€™t make sense.โ€

โ€œStop being cryptic.โ€ Wu Dahai crossed his legs. โ€œJust tell them.โ€

White Rabbit lowered her voice and said, โ€œIt was because the four men of Huaziโ€™s family were no awakeners. They were regular humans.โ€
