Chapter 40: Visitor
The horrifying scene Gao Yang imagined didnât become reality. All he saw was black, and there was a smell of mold and decay that was signature for places abandoned for a long time.
Officer Huang closed the door and felt around the dark until he found the pull chain. He turned on the light.
Pzzztâclick. A low-voltage light struggled for a good moment before coming to life. While it was still dim, it was bright enough for them to take a clear look at the interior.
The walls of the square living room were painted white, but many parts of the paint had already peeled off. The floor was a bluish cement, and there was a ceiling fan above their heads, covered in dirt and spiderwebs.
Right across from the door hung a red clock with an old-school design. The western style made it stand out in the room, and it was still ticking with a swinging pendulum.
At the bottom of the wall stood a quaint cabinet, on which was a black-and-white TV. The TV was even attached to a half-meter long antenna behind it, and before the cabinet was a few black stools rather than a couch. The family must have watched the TV sitting on stools back when they were alive. There was a calendar on the left side wall with landscape paintings of well-known attractions and historic sites. Under that was a sewing machine from the past. Further down, there were a few dark blue jugs in the corner; they seemed to be containers for pickled vegetables.
That was all there was in the living room. It was an era where even everyday supplies werenât abundant.
Officer Huang walked up to the sewing machine and pressed a finger to it. There was a thick layer of dirt. He said with a frown, âStrange.â
âYeah.â Gao Yang had pretty much scanned through the place. âItâs been a long while since the house has seen any people.â
âOf course,â Wang Zikai said. âItâs been thirty years!â
With a wry smile, Gao Yang patiently explained, âIn our world, the homicide happened thirty years ago, but in this world, it has only been less than half a month. The village has just organized a funeral for the family, remember?â
âOh, right!â
Gao Yang had to wonder if there was a brain inside his head.
âMoreover, there are a lot of blood stains on the ground in the front yard, yet there is no sign of struggling in the living room.â Officer Huang clicked his tongue. âCome on, letâs check the other rooms.â
He took the lead to enter the secondary bedroom on the left. On the door was a paper cutout of the character âxiâ, happiness, which would indicate that this was the wedding room. As expected, the room was all red when he turned on the light. Red blanket, red pillows, red canopy, red lanterns, red fake flowers, red closet, red vanity...
Just like the living room, everything was covered in a layer of dust, making the room both vibrant and old, and both joyous and eerie.
âA young woman was married into the family. It was the night of the wedding.â Officer Huang returned to the living room, putting things together in his head. âSomething happened. The next day, the family was found killed and cut up, and the body parts scattered in different places of the Gu Familyâs Village. The brideâs head is still missing even after all these years.â đŻđđđđđđđ·đžđđđĄ.đŹđ€đą
âStop it!â Fat Jun tensed up. âWe arenât here to solve a cold case. Letâs find a way out of here.â
âI know,â said Officer Huang. âThatâs why I want to solve the case.â
Gao Yang nodded. âAgreed. I think we have to find the culprit who killed the family in order to leave.â
âYouâve got any idea?â asked Officer Huang.
Gao Yang tried his best to analyze the situation. âNo signs of struggling in the room. That means the family was killed and dismembered without the ability to resist or having lost their ability to resist. As for where it all happened...â
âThe front yard,â said Qing Ling.
âYeah.â Gao Yang paused. âThatâs all Iâve got for now.â
Officer Huang pulled a chair and sat down. âMy then mentor wasnât an awakener, so there were two things he must have neglected when investigating the case.â
âFirst, were Huaziâs family humans or monsters, or was there a mix of both? Second, was the culprit human or monster?â
âAbout that...â After some hesitation, Gao Yang asked, âHow many types of monsters are there to your knowledge, Officer Huang?â
Officer Huang didnât immediately respond, but in the end, he said, âIâm not going to stick to the rules anymore given the situation. Wu Dahai told me that the organization had run into four types of monsters: delusion monsters, wrath monsters, greed monsters, and pride monsters.â
Qing Ling pricked up her ears. âGreed monsters? Pride monsters?â
âGreed monsters are also known as assimilators, and pride monsters are known as observers. I donât know what kind of greed monsters there are, but according to Wu Dahai, greed monsters are terrifying in that they can turn into humans through a certain method.â
Everyone, outside of a disinterested Wang Zikai, gasped.
âWhat do you mean?â Qing Ling asked.
âWhat it sounds like,â Officer Huang said in a low voice. âThey arenât pretending to be humans, but can become humans. Thatâs why theyâre called assimilators.â
Something came to Gao Yangâs mind. He said, âBut humans are divided into those who havenât awakened and those who have.â
âAwakeners,â Officer Huang said with certainty. âGreed monsters can become awakeners. Those who havenât awakened wonât be attacked by monsters. That is the one constant of this world.â
âThen are the monster-turned-awakeners humans or monsters?â Gao Yang was lost.
Officer Huang shook his head. âPerhaps we can get an answer from the Twelve Zodiac Signs if we get out of here alive.â
âWhat about pride monsters?â
Officer Huang shook his head again. âI only know they exist, but nothing else.â
Gao Yangâs brain went on overdrive. If Baili Yi hadnât lied to him, there would also be life monsters and death monsters in addition to the known delusion monsters, wrath monsters, greed monsters, and pride monsters. However, he didnât intend on telling the others about it. He knew nothing about life monsters and death monsters, and bringing them up would only give rise to panic and dampen morale.
Unbelievable or not, Gao Yang tried to explain their situation with his own logic. âI have a hypothesis, and itâs only a hypothesis. What if the culprit of the tragic death of the family was a type of monster we donât know about? Then could this Gu Familyâs Village be an artificial domain it has created?â
âDo you mean,â Qing Lingâs eyes twirled, âthat we may be able to escape by finding it and killing it?â
âThatâs the best hypothesis we have at the moment.â Officer Huang nodded. âItâs our most viable option, and we have to make the attempt as soon as possible. We have been without water and food for 20 hours. Under normal circumstances, we wonât live past the third day, and by the end of the second day, we will have lost our ability to move normally.â
Gao Yang glanced at Wang Zikai. âYouâre an exception. Your body has been modified, and youâll survive longer than we do.â
âOf course!â Wang Zikai was pleased with himself, and his excitement caught up to him again. âIâm gonna save the world. Of course I canât get trapped in this shithole! Find that thing, and Iâll take care of the rest!â
Thud, thud, thudâ
Gao Yang whirled around. He was closest to the door, and he heard it clearly. free webno vel
Someone was knocking.
