The Creatures That We Are-Chapter 1165: Vanish
Chapter 1165: Vanish
The two strangers alerted the room.
“Relax,” Quiet Book quickly said. “This is Tang Xiaocong. Her friend is Sun Hu. Both are newly joining awakeners. They weren’t able to give away their Talents, and they chose not to join the battle. So they stayed to keep watch.”
“Oh, new companions!” Wandering Tune went up to shake Tang Xiaocong’s hand enthusiastically. Sun Hu immediately stepped forward to shake his hand for her.
“We were hiding in a psychiatric hospital as patients. Sister One Stone found us. Now, we work the front desk of the building.”
“Haha, good for you.” Wandering Tune chuckled. “Which do you prefer?”
“Being psychiatric patients was easier, but we had to take meds,” Tang Xiaocong said seriously. “The front desk...well, work’s busy during the daytime, but we get a salary!”
Sun Hu smiled bitterly. “Don’t know if we’ll get to finish the first month.”
The atmosphere grew heavy.
“Why are you all standing around?” Crimson Bee attempted to lighten the mood. He had had enough wallowing. He didn’t want to go back to it. “Grab some chairs from the meeting room and food from the cafeteria. We’ll all be staying up here with our sleeping friends.”
“That works!”
“Hear hear!”
“Good idea!”
The proposal met enthusiastic responses. Everyone got on with it, and soon, they all sat around the ward, sharing food and drinks as well as laughs.
Out of unspoken agreement, none of them mentioned the upcoming Battle of the Curtain Call. Instead, they chatted about their lives after becoming mundane again. Inexplicably, however, the mood still took a turn.
Rewind sighed. “I went on a travel with two close friends. We’d been talking about it. The actual trip wasn’t as enjoyable as I imagined.”
“Same for me. I was going to enjoy all the good food in the city, but I got hit with acute gastroenteritis on the third day. I ended up lying in the hospital for a week.” Ting Ting smiled wryly. “My unflappable stomach is gone with my power.”
“Haha, same.” Lying Wood adjusted his glasses. “I’d always thought I had a silver tongue, but I realized my mistake after losing my Talent. When my mother had an argument with the neighbors, I spent the whole day mediating between them and couldn’t resolve it.”
“Yeah, a mundane life isn’t easy, either,” Jiang Hao said. “Our Talents helped us a lot.”
“Am I the only one who doesn’t miss my Talent?” Sunny chewed on a seed. “Without the damn thing, my life is much better.”
“Oh, that’s right!” Small Luo looked at Sunny in surprise. “You look much younger, Sister Sunny, and your eyes seem bright.”
“Right?” Sunny said happily, her expression radiant with youthful excitement. “Two days ago, I went shopping with my friends. And a boy asked for my number! The first time ever in my life!”
“Haha, congrats!”
“I don’t feel any difficulty adapting, either,” Veggie said with a smile. “I went back to the supermarket I worked for as a cashier. Last week, I ran into the ex who dumped me. He was with his wife and kids. He looked happy.”
“Whoa, Veggie, you aren’t stuttering anymore?” Citrus realized belatedly.
Veggie nodded with a smile. “Yeah. The stutter didn’t go away even after I awakened. Now that I have become mundane again, I stop stuttering. It’s quite amazing.”
“Everyone.” Wandering Tune slowly stood up with a half-filled bottle of beer, scanning the room. “We all know that there’s no going back after our awakening, or we wouldn’t have come here tonight.”
They all fell silent.
After a moment, Lin Fu sighed while stroking his mustache. “We’ve awakened. Whether we woke up ourselves or got woken up by someone else, we cannot go back to sleep.”
Donxote broke his silence, glancing at his watch. “It’ll be twelve o’clock soon.”
That quieted the room again. They might not share the same feelings, but now, they were all waiting for the same moment to arrive, like a group of people who had given away their tickets to a concert but ended up returning to the outside of the venue to wait for the opening.
“We’ll...win, won’t we?” Ting Ting tightened her arms around Wang Weiyan.
No one responded. No one had an answer.
“Fellows!” Wandering Tune raised his bottle. “If they win tonight, we’ll welcome them back as heroes! If they lose, we’ll bury them and sweep their tombs!”
“Yeah!”
Crimson Bee shot to his feet. “If they die, their Talents may return to us. Then we’ll carry the torch and keep fighting!”
“Well said! Don’t give up until the last second!”
“That’s what awakeners are!”
“Fight for survival!”
“We’ll make our own destiny!”
They cheered and hollered passionately, their courage warming them and driving away the chill and despair in their hearts.
Quiet Book sat by the beds, joining the chorus.

She noticed a wilted leaf on the potted plant at Heavenly Dog’s bed. Reaching out, she grasped the leaf and injected it with Plant’s energy. Soon, the leaf came alive with renewed vitality.
That silenced everyone, drawing all the eyes in the room. The green looked like hope, unassuming yet stubborn.
That, however, wasn’t what Crimson Bee noticed. He raised his voice, “Quiet Book! Didn’t you give your Talents to someone else?”
Realization dawned on everyone. Yes, Quiet Book should’ve given Substitute and Plant to Gao Xin. She should be mundane now.
Quiet Book realized she had exposed herself, and she couldn’t talk herself out of it. She lowered her head and mumbled, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to lie to you...”
“But why would you lie?” Crimson Bee asked—no, he demanded.
“I, I...” Quiet Book hesitated.
“Quiet Book, given the situation, there’s no reason to keep any secret, right?” Rewind encouraged.
Quiet Book opened up after a moment, “I didn’t actually give my Talents to Uncle Xin. Sister Vermilion Bird told me not to let anyone know.”
“Why?” Crimson Bee pressed. “Do you not trust us?”
“That’s not it. It’s because...”
Without any warning, Quiet Book vanished. It was such a bizarre turn of events that everyone was stunned into silence.
“Ah!”
Rewind screamed in panic. Heavenly Dog and Xiao Xin were gone, too.
“What is this...”
Crimson Bee turned to ask Tang Xiaocong and Sun Hu, but he didn’t finish his question. The pair were gone as well, leaving only empty chairs.
