The Creatures That We Are-Chapter 1041: Disciple
Chapter 1041: Disciple
Northern entrance of Green Lotus Park, late at night.
Gao Yang vanished.
All the puppets lost their target and reverted to standby mode. Qilin started, too.
He had thought Gao Yang had used Teleportation, but that was quickly disproven. Teleportation had a limited range. Qilin should be able to catch the traveling trace faintly with his psychic senses. Besides, teleportations didn’t come with such powerful energy ripples.
Then Qilin suspected Invisibility, but he didn’t find any trace of Gao Yang with Mind’s Eye.
Qilin was certain that Gao Yang had disappeared for real.
He couldn’t guess what Gao Yang was up to, and he didn’t waste time dwelling on it.
His left eye flashed green. Receiving the order, Heavenly Dog, perching on a lamp post, flew toward where Qing Ling was. His mission was to take the Buff Rune Circuit from her, killing Zhang Wei too once he found him.
Yet Gao Yang returned as soon as Heavenly Dog took flight.
He had been gone for less than ten seconds.
Powerful gray-blue energy rippled. Two Gao Yangs appeared out of nowhere and merged into one, his gaze sad yet determined. That startled everyone into a one-second inaction. Then the puppets on standby sprang to action.
Gao Yang shrouded himself with golden energy and conjured radiant fire in his right fist, teleporting to Qilin and making a powerful Fire Punch.
Fierce flames shot out of his fist and morphed into a fire dragon, howling and hurtling toward Qilin.
Qilin didn’t even move.
The moment the fire dragon slammed through him, Qilin turned spectral with Unreachable, looking like a green spirit. Gao Yang wasn’t surprised. The Fire Punch was only meant as a test. He immediately jumped sideways to put some distance between him and Qilin.
As soon as he landed, he sensed a cold, violent killing intent coming from his side. Only War Tiger could move so quickly with such threatening force.
He brought his giant sword down on Gao Yang.
Taking it head-on wasn’t even a choice. Gao Yang teleported away.
Bam! The blade left a two-meter-wide crack in the road where Gao Yang had been, and the tremoring force lashed in all directions like a hurricane.
With the blade buried into the ground, War Tiger let go of the hilt and lifted his feet to step on the hilt. He launched himself with a powerful leap to chase after Gao Yang, who had teleported away. He drew the Green Dog Demon Blade from his waist.
With Teleportation still in cooldown, Gao Yang drew a Black Gold dagger and injected it with the energy of Absolute Defense, blocking War Tiger’s slash.
Clang! Gray-green blade aura splintered around Gao Yang’s dagger. If not for his golden armor, Gao Yang would’ve been covered in cuts by the flurry of scattering aura.

The split second was all it took for Gao Yang to fully understand what made Lonesome Emperor formidable.
It explained why Qilin turned War Tiger, Gregor, and the others into living puppets rather than killing them and using them as corpse puppets—if he was only going to avoid risks, corpse puppet would be the better option; while he would only get to control them for a limited time, corpse puppets couldn’t be converted back and turned into his enemies.
Outside of unlimited use time, living puppets’ greatest strength was their intelligence, power, and self-sufficiency.
Qilin had to control a corpse puppet, and without the battle experience and instincts of the puppet, Qilin would have trouble making the most of the puppet.
The best proof was Azure Dragon; the puppet was much weaker than the man himself.
Living puppets posed no such weakness. Qilin only had to order War Tiger to kill Gao Yang, and War Tiger would fight to the best of his ability.
War Tiger was still alive. He retained his experience, instinct, and intelligence, able to use 100% of his power—no, even 300%.
War Tiger’s tactic showed his optimal decision-making.
He knew that Gao Yang was an agile fighter. Failing the sudden attack with his giant sword, he switched to Green Dog Demon Blade immediately to go after Gao Yang, opting to utilize his speed, too. It was clearly the more threatening move.
Damit, I have to take care of War Tiger—
Gao Yang’s eyes twitched. War Tiger had stabbed himself in the abdomen with a dagger!
Killing Expert, in his dying state!
As expected of you, Uncle Tiger. You fight the same way as a puppet, risking your life the moment you rush into the fight.
“Hah!” War Tiger let out a low battle cry, his right hand suddenly exerting terrifying might with the Green Dog Demon Blade.
Blocking the blade, Gao Yang was sent flying over ten meters.
As soon as he steadied his footing, War Tiger charged at him once more like a phantom. The blade held low near the ground left a thin dent with its wild gray-green aura. Then whoosh, he brought the blade upward in a powerful swing. Blade aura rose into a green tsunami, overwhelming Gao Yang.
Using his dagger as the medium, Gao Yang consolidated the energy of Absolute Defense into a golden long blade, parrying the upward-rising slash from War Tiger.
Bam!
The golden blade shattered into countless energy particles after the perfect parry, yet the currents generated by the powerful aura still sent Gao Yang flying above the street.
Without a moment of delay, War Tiger launched himself toward Gao Yang like a missile with a cracking stomp.
Gao Yang injected energy into his dagger once more to create a longer, thicker golden blade, meeting War Tiger halfway.
The two men exchanged blows midair. The blade aura of the Green Dog Demon Blade was fierce, but the golden long blade gave as good as it got.
In a matter of seconds, countless arcs of green aura and golden energy sparked and scattered. From afar, it looked like a firework of slashes and energy particles had been launched into the sky, flickering at high frequency before slowly falling.
Things had changed.
Back then, War Tiger had crushed Gao Yang easily like an ant, but now, Gao Yang’s Agility and other stats exceeded those of War Tiger.
War Tiger’s Killing Expert was level 6. Even in his dying state, he was no match for Gao Yang.
And Gao Yang had received training in blade technique from Qing Ling, who was a disciple of War Tiger. As Qing Ling’s student, Gao Yang knew War Tiger’s patterns all too well.
With the golden long blade conjured with a Black Gold dagger, Gao Yang parried every attack from War Tiger precisely and agily. He wasn’t simply keeping War Tiger at bay, but also coming up with a solution.
He couldn’t just kill War Tiger, but it wouldn’t be easy to destroy only the green vertical eye—Lonesome Emperor’s brand—on War Tiger’s forehead without critically injuring or killing the man.
Well, he could always use Spirit Domain. Then it would be a piece of cake. However, it didn’t make sense to use his secret weapon just to deal with War Tiger. Then he would have trouble going after Qilin and the other puppets.
The thinking took two seconds.
Then Gao Yang started.
