The Creatures That We Are-Chapter 1038: Get Mad
Chapter 1038: Get Mad
The dorm keeper appeared beside Gao Yang, a hologram exclusive to Gao Yang that only he could see or hear.
She smiled and sideeyed him. “You have accumulated...”
“I’m in a hurry. Get to the point.” Gao Yang stared at Qilin, ready to meet him in a fight any time.
The dorm keeper dropped her smile and said at a quickened pace. “3799 points. A little away from comprehending Time-Space Spirit.”
Gao Yang focused. Just as he had thought.
It wasn’t his first time entering Qilin’s illusion, and he wouldn’t get any Luck points from simply being in it this time. However, level 8 Eidos was tremendously dangerous, and that gave him a high bonus.
According to the system notification, the threat had been increasing steadily. Gao Yang estimated that the moment he entered the sweet dream of victory, the danger was at least at a 14000 bonus level. From the time Qilin sought him out to the ten minutes Qilin was trapped in the Absolute Barrier, the danger level had steadily climbed to 20000.
That had yielded Gao Yang over 3000 Luck points. With the 700 and some Luck points he'd walked into the fight with, he was close to getting enough for one attempt at comprehending a Talent.
“The target is powerful. I suggest you keep your distance and keep him busy until you get enough Luck points.”

Gao Yang was surprised. “Didn’t expect you to worry about me.”
“He gave me a different skin for no reason. Even a system would get mad.” The dorm keeper eyed Qilin with a displeased expression. She really was getting more and more like a real person.
“Comprehend Time-Space Spirit as soon as I have enough Luck points.” Gao Yang ended their conversation with a joke. “That’s it for now, Miss Bo.”
The dorm keeper blinked before putting on a polite, business-like smile. “Of course, Mr. Liu. May you recover soon from the Jupiter Virus.”
The moment she disappeared, a notification sounded a warning in Gao Yang’s head.
[Warning...]
Before the system finished, Gao Yang’s keen senses had already sensed the quickened flow of the air around him—something dangerous was circling him. It was Pestilence’s poisonous wind!
Gao Yang’s heart sank. It seemed that Gregor had become a living puppet under Qilin’s Lonesome Emperor.
He teleported out of the lethal wind.
“Aghhh!”
The next second, an eerie scream rang through the street. The moment Gao Yang was out of the threat of poison, he felt like his soul was yanked from his body. The chorus of voices started out gentle and serene, transitioning into an excited joy, and finally ending on a strange, violent note.
Praise, Requiem, Mute, Strange, and Disorientation combined to hit Gao Yang with a cocktail of voices, laced with Eidos’ catalyzing power.
Three seconds later, the sound faded.
Gao Yang quickly regained his senses, but no matter how swift his recovery, he couldn't outpace Qilin, the one casting the spell.
Between one blink and the next, Qilin had reached him, swinging his cane.
With Killing Expert and Muscles granting him unrivaled explosive power, Fly enhancing his speed, and God of Firearms accelerating his attack, Qilin made a move that would instantly kill.
Gao Yang couldn't conjure an energy shield with Absolute Defense in time or teleport away—his energy path had been disrupted by the buzz the auditory cocktail had put him under.
He raised his right hand to shield his head from the horizontal swing.
Gao Yang slammed through a telephone pole and flipped a car before skittering eight meters along the road. He managed to stop himself on one knee, left hand braced against the ground, his right hand dangling and bleeding at his side.
Without hesitation, Gao Yang drew a Black Gold dagger with his left hand and sliced off his right forearm. The severed limb quickly festered and rotted, melting into a pool of viscous blood—Qilin had covered his cane with Pestilence's poison. The indirect poisonous attack acted slower than direct contact.
Gao Yang numbed himself to the pain of losing the limb with Psychic Armor, injecting Medicine C into his right shoulder.
Qilin didn’t rush in for another attack, but instead eyed Gao Yang coldly from twenty meters away.
“Gao Yang, you’re no match for me. It’s not too late to give me the Time-Space Rune Circuit. Humanity needs a savior.”
“Humanity?” Gao Yang scoffed. “Then tell me, who are the humans you’re talking about?”
Qilin didn’t say anything to that.
Gao Yang demanded, “Are the companions I lost humans?! Are the companions you lost humans?! Aren’t you the savior? Why didn’t you save them? Who did you even save?”
Following a short silence, Qilin sighed softly, gaze rueful. “I thought you would come to understand me after everything, but it seems that was merely my wishful thinking.”
He felt a pang in his chest as he looked up at the night sky. In the end, Sir Jiang was the only one who understood him—no, perhaps not even Sir Jiang did. The pride monster merely wanted a straight-A student to turn in the answer sheet for him.
Clink. Qilin knocked on the ground with his cane.
Strange energy rippled from his feet and turned into a giant web covering his one-kilometer radius; it was level 8 Puppeteer’s puppet formation.
Within the web, Qilin could seamlessly manipulate all his puppets—an upgrade similar to the leap from a 3G network to a 4G network.
Soon, his puppets emerged, taking their positions: on street corners, atop rooftops, perching on lampposts and billboards, lurking in alleyways, and surrounding Gao Yang.
Gao Yang calmly assessed them.
The corpse puppets included Sister Ling, Nomad, Flower, First Firelord, Amon, Jing Ke, Stubborn Weasel, Yellow Lotus, Thick Earth, Zhong He, Blood Amber, and Edmond.
The living puppets included War Tiger, Liao Liao, Ke Yo, Heavenly Dog, Gregor, and Rain River.
Within the puppet formation, Qilin could switch between his puppets’ Talents and his own without delay. One second, a puppet might be using its Talent, and the next, Qilin could be using it.
Gao Yang would effectively be fighting eighteen puppets and a Qilin with all their Talents at the same time. He wouldn’t last without using an Absolute Barrier, not for even ten seconds, let alone ten minutes.
However, an Absolute Barrier would only delay his demise. Time wasn’t on Gao Yang’s side. Qilin could very well trap him here while sending living puppets to take care of Zhang Wei.
Qilin calmly stared at Gao Yang, taking off his glasses and putting them in his suit jacket’s breast pocket.
“Farewell, Gao Yang.”
By now, Gao Yang's right forearm had largely regenerated with Medicine C and Gecko. Golden energy wrapped around it like a cybernetic limb, reinforcing it.
He rushed at Qilin the next second.
Whoosh. Qilin surrounded himself with thick poisonous wind to block the approach, while most of his puppets charged at Gao Yang. The young man's blazing eyes reflected only Qilin.
Then suddenly, gray-blue energy rippled out powerfully.
Gao Yang vanished.
