Because of what Juliana Taylor said, everyone buried their heads and continued working on their exams, and everything fell quiet.

For the next few exams, Vera Xavier was the first to hand in her test every time. The other students’ initial surprise had given way to nonchalance, and they started to look at her as if she were a fool.

Vera Xavier simply ignored their stares and continued to turn in her papers early whenever she finished.

In those days, Crestfall’s college entrance exams had not yet been reformed and still followed the old system. In addition to Chinese, Math, Foreign Language, and Politics, which were required for both the liberal arts and science tracks, the science track also required Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. This meant a total of seven subjects—four to be tested today, and three more tomorrow.

The entire day was filled with exams, and students could basically leave as soon as they finished.

Since Vera Xavier was the fastest to finish, she was the first person in the entire school to leave. She bought a lollipop to reward herself and started walking home along the road outside the school, just like always. As she rounded a corner, she heard someone call out to her, "Vera Xavier!"

Vera turned her head and saw Nathaniel Nathan sitting in a car. She gleefully ran over to him. "What are you doing here?" 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

"Get in." Nathaniel’s tone was crisp and cold.

Vera didn’t stand on ceremony and hopped right into his car. The driver was the butler, Ronan Tate. He pursed his lips when he saw Vera get in. ’Looks like the young master is truly smitten with this little country bumpkin.’

He silently prayed in his heart, ’Young Master, you have to realize this country bumpkin has bad intentions. Don’t let her cheat you out of both your fortune and your virtue!’

He hadn’t even finished his prayer when, less than two kilometers down the road, he heard Nathaniel say, "Stop the car."

Ronan Tate quickly slammed on the brakes. Nathaniel opened his door, got out, then pulled open the driver’s side door and said, "Get out. Then go to the market, buy a chicken, and make some soup."

Ronan Tate froze for a second before Nathaniel added, "Go back and tell Master Nathan that I won’t be home for dinner tonight. He said last night that he wanted chicken soup, so you can make it for him."

Stunned again, Ronan Tate asked a foolish question. "Young Master, where are you going?"

Nathaniel shot him a glare as sharp as a knife, and Ronan Tate quickly tried to laugh it off. "The Young Master can go wherever he pleases, of course."

Nathaniel ignored him, sliding into the driver’s seat. "Come sit up front," he said to Vera.

Vera had no objections and moved to the passenger seat. The moment she was settled, Nathaniel slammed on the gas, and the car sped off.

It was only then that Ronan Tate realized he was standing right next to the fresh market. ’So Nathaniel just dumped me here to go grocery shopping?’

A pang of melancholy hit him. ’So when Master Nathan said he wanted chicken soup last night, and Nathaniel agreed so readily, he was actually just volunteering me for the job!’

Now that it was just the two of them in the car, Vera snuck a glance at Nathaniel. His profile was sharp and cool. Handsome as he was, he seemed to lack any trace of worldly warmth, as aloof and remote as a banished immortal.

In truth, between her past life and her present one, they hadn’t spent much time together at all, so Vera wasn’t quite sure how to act around him. Just as she was about to make some small talk, he spoke first. "How did the exams go today?"

"This is me we’re talking about. Of course they went great!" Vera said with a grin.

Nathaniel glanced at her out of the corner of his eye. There was a gentle warmth in her eyes and at the corners of her brow—a complete departure from how she used to shrink away from him on sight. Now, she was confident and lovely.

Then he noticed the lollipop in her mouth, and he suddenly wanted to know what it tasted like.

He gave a slight nod and held out his hand. "Give it to me."
