Chapter 39: Chapter 39: I Will Be Filial to You

Vera Xavier took a deep breath and said, "She’s my biological mother, after all. I’m willing to let go of everything that’s happened up to now. But if she hits me again, I will fight back. And if she tries to cause a scene or goes to the police station, I’ll need you to be my witnesses."

Theresa Goodman nodded. Vera Xavier looked at Rona Langdon and said, "Mom, from the moment I came back to the city, I genuinely wanted to treat you well and be a good daughter. So please, stop hitting me. Stop cursing at me over every little thing. Let me be a good daughter to you."

Grandma Dixon remarked with a sigh, "Vera is just too kindhearted. After everything you’ve done, she’s still thinking about being a good daughter."

Director Goodman seized the opportunity to scold Rona Langdon. "Look at yourself! You treat the girl so horribly, yet she’s still set on being a good daughter to you. How could you lay a hand on such a wonderful child? Just look at what a mess you’ve made of her! Take her to the hospital when you get home. She’s a young woman; you don’t want her to be scarred."

Rona Langdon wanted to say she hadn’t pinched Vera Xavier at all, let alone cracked her head open. But even she knew she wasn’t so stupid as to think anyone would believe her in this situation. She quickly promised Director Goodman she wouldn’t hit Vera Xavier again.

Director Goodman lectured her for a few more moments before letting her leave.

After Rona Langdon left with Vera Xavier, Director Goodman let out a long sigh. "Poor Preston, saddled with such a shameless shrew of a wife."

Grandma Dixon sighed as well. "And poor Vera. Such a wonderful child, stuck with a mother who’s rotten to the core."

Ultimately, it was a Preston Family matter. They were outsiders, and it wasn’t their place to interfere too much.

Because of the commotion, the entire residential compound knew Rona Langdon had beaten Vera Xavier badly that day. While Rona Langdon had hit Vera before, it had never blown up into a public spectacle. With everything out in the open, everyone in the compound now thought Vera Xavier was terribly pitiful and Rona Langdon was just plain cruel.

When Vera Xavier and Rona Langdon got home, it wasn’t completely dark yet. Zachary Preston and Cara Preston hadn’t returned.

As soon as Vera Xavier walked in, Rona Langdon immediately slid the bolt on the door shut. Then she grabbed a broom and came at Vera. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Vera Xavier had expected this. She grabbed Rona Langdon’s hand and said, "Mom, Director Goodman just said that if you hit me again, not only can I fight back, I can also call the police."

"You’ve really grown some nerve!" Rona Langdon snarled.

Vera Xavier stared fixedly at Rona Langdon. "If you don’t believe me, go ahead and try."

At eighteen years old, Vera Xavier was half a head taller than Rona Langdon. Rona had lived too comfortably over the years and put on a fair bit of weight. That, combined with her short stature, made her look stout and squat next to Vera’s frame.

What shocked Rona Langdon the most was that Vera Xavier’s eyes had lost all their former meekness. Now, they held a biting chill, a cold that seeped straight into Rona Langdon’s heart and made her shudder involuntarily.

Rona Langdon had never seen such a terrifying gaze. She unconsciously loosened her grip on the broom.

Vera Xavier smiled coldly and turned to head upstairs. ’I’m starting to understand her now. There will be even more spectacular clashes to come.’

Rona Langdon waited until her back was turned, then it hit her: she had actually lost this round to Vera Xavier. Now that she couldn’t see Vera’s eyes, her fear subsided, and she bellowed, "I’ll beat you to death, you worthless little wench!"
