Chapter 138: Chapter 138: Feigned Submission

"If I tell him, he’ll definitely ask where our biological daughter went and try to bring her back. I went to so much trouble to successfully switch them back then just so my daughter could live a life of privilege. I absolutely cannot let her return to the Preston family now!" Rona Langdon said through gritted teeth.

Cara Preston glanced at Rona Langdon without a word, but her heart filled with resentment.

’From her perspective, the Preston Family was already much better off than the Xavier Family, yet Rona Langdon felt it wasn’t enough. That must mean the family Rona’s biological daughter ended up with is incredibly wealthy and powerful.’

’She couldn’t understand it. Why was there such a huge difference when they were all born on the same day? And why was she the most miserable one of all!’

The only thing that brought her a sliver of comfort was that Vera Xavier, the true young miss, was even more miserable. First, she was swapped into the impoverished Xavier Family, and now that she was back with the Preston Family, she had to suffer Rona Langdon’s torment every single day.

Cara Preston asked in a low voice, "Mom, which family did you switch my real sister to back then?"

The "sister" she was referring to now was not Vera Xavier, but Rona Langdon’s biological daughter.

Rona Langdon immediately shot her a fierce glare. "Why are you asking that? It’s none of your business!"

Cara Preston quickly put on a placating smile and said, "I was just thinking, if I don’t succeed in marrying Nathaniel Nathan this time, we could ask my sister to help out our brother and get him promoted sooner."

Rona Langdon hesitated for a moment before saying, "You don’t need to worry about this. The time isn’t right yet, so you don’t need to know."

Though snubbed, Cara Preston showed no sign of it on her face. Instead, she smiled faintly. "Yes."

Rona Langdon said to her, "You can go back now. I’m going to the Kanes’."

Cara Preston knew she was going to the Kanes’ to get them to deal with Vera Xavier. This had been her goal for the day, so she could now cast aside the earlier unpleasantness.

On her way to the Kanes’, Rona Langdon had already plotted out what she would say to them to get what she wanted.

She muttered to herself, "Vera Xavier, even if you are the legitimate heiress, you still have to listen to me! If I don’t utterly destroy you, my daughter will be the one to suffer. Only when you’ve been dragged through the mud will they stop acknowledging you and place all their hopes on my daughter!"

Actually, her initial plan for the baby switch was quite perfect in her mind. She had wanted to wait for Cara Preston to grow up and find a way to marry her to her son. That way, they would have forged an unbreakable bond with that powerful family, who would then help them with all their might.

Who would have known there would be another twist? Cara Preston turned out not to be the daughter of that powerful family, throwing all her plans into disarray.

So, when she first found out, she was actually quite angry. She had even briefly considered the idea of having her son, Maxwell Preston, marry Vera Xavier. However, she later realized it would involve too many complications. Besides, she truly looked down on Vera Xavier, who had just returned from the countryside, and felt that a country-raised girl wasn’t good enough for her precious son.

It was nearly dark by the time Rona Langdon finished her business with the Kane family and returned. Vera Xavier wasn’t too surprised to see her back, but when Vera met her eyes and saw the viciousness within them, she grew uneasy. A bad feeling coiled in her heart.

Rona Langdon just gave her a single glance and a sneer before going to find Zachary Preston. For once, she lowered her head and admitted fault. "I went a bit too far with Vera’s matter this time. I won’t do it again."
