The CEO's Wife Is a Medical Master-Chapter 123: Running Away from Home
A red mark appeared on Rona Langdon’s face from the chopsticks. Her eyes filled with indignation. If Zachary Preston didn’t hold such an unshakeable place in her heart, she might have exploded right then and there.
She grew furious. "Do you have any idea how black-hearted and vicious Vera Xavier is? If you keep protecting her like this, she’ll be the death of you one day!"
Zachary Preston grew furious as well. "I just don’t understand. Vera is our daughter, so why would you say such things about her? Even if she didn’t grow up with us, she is still our daughter! Before she came home, I asked the relatives and neighbors from the Xavier Family’s side. Every single one of them said she was sweet, clever, and sensible!"
"She’s just fooling you!" Rona Langdon shouted. "You have no idea how terrifying and cruel she is! You don’t see how she bullies me when you’re not around!"
"She bullies you?" Zachary Preston sneered. "You’re the one who bullies her behind my back the second I’m gone! Don’t think I’m an idiot. I know you stole her clothes and even plotted with Jiasheng to send her to a sweatshop in Corvale!"
"Why you, Vera Xavier! You actually ran to your father to tattle on me!" Rona Langdon flew into a rage and raised her hand to strike her.
Zachary Preston grabbed her hand. "That’s enough! Vera didn’t come crying to me. You’ve done so many disgraceful things on your own. Do you have any idea how many people in this compound can’t stand to watch you anymore?"
He finished and looked her in the eye. "Do you know what Vera said to me? She said, ’Dad, please don’t fight with Mom!’ She wants our family to be happy and harmonious. I just don’t understand why you can’t accept a daughter as sweet and sensible as Vera!"
"That’s because she’s not even—" The words were on the tip of Rona Langdon’s tongue, but she bit them back. Biting her lip, she said, "Don’t be fooled by her innocent act. She’s wicked! The other day, she held a pair of scissors to my throat and threatened to kill me!"
’The mere thought of that day—of Vera Xavier holding the scissors to her throat and staring at her with that cold expression—sent a chill of belated fear down her spine. She had never seen such terrifying eyes.’
Zachary Preston looked toward Vera Xavier. With her eyes red-rimmed, Vera said, "Mom, how could you accuse me like that? I... I didn’t."
Her delicate vulnerability stood in stark contrast to Rona Langdon’s aggressive unreasonableness. Coupled with Rona’s propensity for lying, it was immediately clear to Zachary Preston who he should believe.
Rona Langdon grew frantic. Pointing to a scar on her neck, she said, "You dare deny it! Here’s the proof!"
Zachary Preston took a deep breath. "Rona Langdon, we’ve been married for so many years. You know exactly how I’ve treated you. I always thought that despite your bad temper, you were at least straightforward. But I never imagined you would stoop to such measures just to hurt your own daughter!"
"You’d rather believe that little wretch than your own wife? I... I’m done with you!" With that, Rona Langdon turned and stormed out.
She expected Zachary Preston to come out and coax her back, so her exit, while appearing swift, was deliberately slow.
But this time, she had completely miscalculated. Zachary Preston made no move to stop her, simply letting her walk out of the house.
Vera whispered to Zachary, "Dad, it’s already dark out. Will Mom be okay walking out by herself so late?"
