The CEO's Substitute Ex-Wife-Chapter 520: Don’t be afraid
Dudi felt guilty, but Wen Nuan was grateful. If it weren’t for Dudi’s rescue, she probably wouldn’t know how long she would have been inside. Wen Nuan nodded tearfully, "Thank you!"
"Silly girl, no need to thank me, it’s too formal. It’s what I should do," Dudi said. She was his fiancée, born for him to protect and cherish.
She closed her eyes, suppressing the disappointment and relief in her heart. It was Dudi, not the person she had thought. There was disappointment, but also relief. Fei Mo wasn’t feeling well and probably couldn’t have taken such a long flight to America.
She was overthinking things.
Perhaps it was just a hallucination caused by her deep longing.
Wen Nuan suddenly remembered something, "You arranged for me to go to the hospital, is that alright? Won’t it be... troublesome?"
"What trouble? It’s fine. I have a formal release order. They won’t bother you anymore. You’re safe and free. Don’t worry." Dudi knew she had misunderstood and hurriedly reassured her.
If he had rescued her through illegal means, Wen Nuan would have become a wanted criminal and wouldn’t be able to live in America. He was unwilling. Besides, given his relationship with the authorities, he could ensure Wen Nuan could live in the sunlight with just a small sacrifice. He had no need to take the risk, nor did he want Wen Nuan to lose her original life.
Wen Nuan was filled with doubt, and fragmented thoughts flashed through her mind. Suddenly, she remembered a rich baritone voice, "Little cousin-in-law..." That was Xiao Bai’s voice. Wen Nuan’s lips curled into a smile. So it was Xiao Bai. Xiao Bai had come, and then Du Di. Xiao Bai had left because he knew Du Di could legally rescue her, right?
I see.
Xiao Bai was really bold; how could he dare come to a place like that?
"Wen Nuan, don’t think about anything. Sleep it off, okay?" Du Di comforted her, and Wen Nuan nodded.
When she woke up again, she felt much better. The nurse took her temperature; she had a low-grade fever, nothing serious. She sat up, her neck wrapped in gauze, which was very uncomfortable. She couldn’t move too much, or it would aggravate the wound.
Her wrists were also wrapped in layers of gauze, but the wound wasn’t as severe as her neck.
Her voice was hoarse because of the neck injury.
Having just eaten something, Dudley came in to ask about her condition, saying that an FBI agent wanted to question her. The mere mention of the FBI sent shivers down Wen Nuan’s spine; those past ten-odd hours had been a nightmare. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Dudley said, "Don’t be afraid, it’s just some normal questions, nothing will hurt you anymore."
Wen Nuan didn’t want to be hurt by Dudley’s words and nodded. Dudley had let them in; it was two white male agents. They asked Wen Nuan what had happened in the basement, who had shot the FBI investigator, what had happened before Dudley and the agents came in, and what she had seen.
Wen Nuan had no recollection of anything, saying she was unconscious and hadn’t seen or heard anything. Since Wen Nuan was unconscious in a chair when Dudley and the agents entered, and they had seen her wounds, or at least the medical report, her story was quite credible. They didn’t want to press her further, so they told her to contact them if she remembered anything. Dudley then saw them out.
Wen Nuan suppressed her fear; she wouldn’t betray Wu Shuang, and of course, she wouldn’t betray Xiao Bai either.
"Dudi, thank you so much this time. I’m sorry to have troubled you again," Wen Nuan said, thanking him once more. She felt truly apologetic for always troubling Dudi. She hadn’t kept her promise to leave with him. Later, in America, Dudi offered to help, but Wen Nuan refused. The Wen family had arranged everything for her. She had always tried to keep her distance from Dudi, knowing he was good to her, but she didn’t want to waste his time or accept his kindness
because she couldn’t repay him. She owed him so much; that’s why she had agreed to attend the fashion show as a friend. With the date approaching, her injuries likely prevented her from keeping her promise and attending. Wen Nuan felt incredibly frustrated.
She always couldn’t keep her promises to Dudi due to external factors, and he had risked so much for her; she felt truly guilty. Wen Nuan wasn’t stupid. Someone like Mo Xiaobai, whether through his mafia connections or his status as an entertainer, knew many people, including within the government. Yet, even Mo Xiaobai couldn’t save her in the same way, while Du Di managed to let her leave legally, without any stain on his record. She knew Du Di must have made some deal with the government, because he was a long-established arms supplier with close ties to the government, always cooperating and mutually beneficial. This time, because of her, Du Di must have been in a very passive position. Thinking of this, Wen Nuan didn’t know how to repay him.
She owed Du Di more and more, to an uncountable degree.
She truly couldn’t repay him.
"Wen Nuan, as I just said, it’s no trouble at all, just a small favor. Don’t think too much about it. Just focus on recovering from your injuries, and leave the rest to me, okay? No one will know about this," Du Di said. "I’ll take care of everything for you." Wen Nuan
nodded tearfully. It would be a lie to say she wasn’t moved by such deep affection from a man, especially knowing her feelings yet still showing this thoughtfulness. She truly didn’t know what to say.
"If you feel sorry, then just focus on healing your injury. Getting well is the greatest way to repay me." Dudi smiled and ruffled her hair, affectionately holding her hand. "Sometimes being kind to someone is just a matter of fate. One gives, the other receives; it’s only natural. You don’t need to worry too much. As long as you accept my kindness and help, I’m already very satisfied. That’s all I ask for. I don’t need anything in return, understand?"
"But..."
"No buts!" Dudi said decisively, looking intently at Wen Nuan. "I just want to be good to you, so Wen Nuan, please don’t reject me, okay?"
Wen Nuan had nothing to say. He had already said so much; what could she say?
Dudi suddenly smiled. "Through this incident, I admire you even more."
Wen Nuan looked at him, puzzled. Dudi smiled and said, "The Wen Nuan I knew before was brave, enthusiastic, positive, and kind—a girl with sunshine in her heart. This time, you were detained by the FBI for over ten hours. Even though you knew everything, you were willing to endure physical pain and even risk your life to keep the secret. I really admire that. In our underworld, we call it loyalty. Many men can’t withstand FBI interrogations, but you endured it without yielding. Wen Nuan, I’m proud of you, and Wu Shuang is proud of you too."
