The CEO's Substitute Ex-Wife-Chapter 468: An Uneasy Alliance
"You are very familiar with Devil’s Castle," he stated calmly, drawing his conclusion. Rather than blindly rushing in and risking his life, following Wushuang would be much more efficient. This was the best course of action. If it were anywhere else, he would never follow a woman, but this was Devil’s Castle, where countless people had met their end. He was determined not to lose his wretched life before achieving his goal.
"Familiarity doesn’t mean I’m willing to take you," Wushuang said indifferently, raising an eyebrow at Ghost Face. "There are too many people who repay kindness with malice. Why should I take you into the vault? What if you have ill intentions and want to kill me? I’d have to deal with the castle mechanisms while guarding against you. Am I that stupid? You might stab me in the back. So, Ghost Face, no partnership. We go our separate ways."
Ghost Face gave a cold smile. His chilling eyes met Wushuang’s as he said in a low voice, "I don’t think you want anything to happen to me either. My demise won’t do you any good. The guards here aren’t from some third-rate place we’re used to. Many of them are retired special agents and assassins, all highly capable. Even if you’re skilled and brave, you must have inquired about the personnel here before breaking into Devil’s Castle. Do you think you can handle them alone?"
"What if I can, and what if I can’t? That’s my business. I came here to steal alone. Meeting you is just a coincidence. I’m better off alone. To be blunt, Ghost Face, I don’t want you to get me into trouble." Wushuang was a queen who acted on her own will. She didn’t care who he was, what his identity was, or whether she hurt his ego. She spoke her mind directly.
As the international number one assassin after Ghost Face, such disrespect toward her predecessor would make anyone think Wushuang was arrogant, uninhibited, and rude. She was indeed arrogant, but Ghost Face didn’t get angry.
She was truly Ye Wei’s daughter. Her aura was exactly the same as Ye Wei’s back then.
The daughter born of Ye Wei and Mo Jue was indeed an improvement upon her parents.
*She dares to talk to me like this.*
Part of what she said was true. She was more flexible and easier to handle alone. If something happened, it would be easier for her to escape. Having one more person meant one more risk.
It wasn’t always a case of ’more people, more power.’
For adventures like this, more people often meant more trouble.
If he were discovered, she couldn’t escape either. If he triggered a mechanism, she would suffer the consequences.
Wushuang’s concerns were perfectly normal, and Ghost Face couldn’t argue. He smiled faintly. "Don’t worry, I definitely won’t get you into trouble. On the contrary, I hope you don’t get *me* into trouble."
She chuckled, a domineering edge in her playful manner. Her eyebrows were like winter wind and snow, cold and sharp. She suddenly began to like Ghost Face’s personality. If he had used a different approach, saying that if she didn’t take him, he would make a scene so they would both be ruined, she might have taken him in and then disposed of him quickly and permanently.
She hated being threatened and wouldn’t allow a ticking time bomb to be present in this situation.
But Ghost Face didn’t say that; instead, he sarcastically warned her not to implicate him.
She liked that arrogance.
"Fine, I’ll take you!" Wushuang said with quick precision. "But on two conditions. First, what are you here to steal? If it’s the same as mine, you must let me have it. Second, you must listen to my command."
Ghost Face paused, narrowing his eyes, seemingly reluctant to answer. Wushuang didn’t pressure him. There was plenty of time; he could take his time considering. If he didn’t agree to these two points, she saw no need to waste time.
"My former girlfriend really wanted the ’Wushuang’ necklace of the Iranian princess. Later, I found out that ’Wushuang’ was stored in Devil’s Castle. I’m taking a gamble. I hope what I want is not the same as what you want," Ghost Face said in a low voice. He was quite afraid that Wushuang’s target was the same as his. Because of Wushuang’s name and the Iranian princess’s necklace, he truly couldn’t guess what would be worth Wushuang risking herself for.
Wushuang raised an eyebrow and smiled. "Congratulations, we’re after different things. This is the first time I’ve heard of ’Wushuang.’" If she had heard of it before, she might have been interested, but she generally wasn’t interested in jewelry and didn’t pay attention.
Ghost Face hummed in acknowledgment. "The second condition is also fine."
With everything settled, Wushuang became decisive. She pulled a remote control from her handbag and pursed her lips. "You have five minutes in a moment. This vault door is a decoy. Once you get in, turn left. There’s a small goddess statue on the right. Turn the statue to the left."
"Okay!" Ghost Face agreed without asking why. Wushuang nodded and pressed the remote control, cutting the power to Devil’s Castle. The vault door was stone, covered with some relief carvings that seemed to form a pattern. In the middle was a long line of English letters. After cutting the power, Wushuang took out a voice recorder.
"Harley Caine," the voice recorder played. The stone door immediately opened. Wushuang quickly looked back. "Go in."
Her hand was pressed against the handprint sensor on the vault door and couldn’t be removed. Ghost Face quickly entered the stone door. The stone door closed rapidly. Ghost Face frowned, instantly understanding. In a flash, he chose to follow Wushuang’s instruction and turn the statue.
Wushuang lifted her hand and quickly entered the stone door.
As soon as the stone door closed, the lights in the corridor turned back on.
This was a specially programmed stone door that only allowed one person to pass through at a time. If a second person tried to pass, they would be sliced in half by magnetic light at the moment of entry. This was something Hǎilán had written down after an experiment, saying that the first experience of having her soul cut in half was quite terrifying.
The voice program in the recorder wasn’t the Duke’s, but the Duke’s son, **Harley Caine**. This was why so many people came to Devil’s Castle and were turned away—they never realized the stone door wasn’t opened by the Duke but by someone else.
The handprint was the Duke’s fingerprint. Wushuang’s palm was covered with a thin layer of simulated human skin, mimicking the Duke’s fingerprint. The stone door’s design was ingenious. Ghost Face understood the secret once he was inside. If he hadn’t turned the small stone statue, Wushuang couldn’t have gotten in, because the voice program wouldn’t recognize the command for another 24 hours. In other words, only the Duke had ever entered this castle’s vault, and the master switch for the mechanisms was inside.
Ghost Face had considered not letting Wushuang in for a second, but it was just a fleeting thought. He knew that in terms of adventure, he was far inferior to Wushuang. With Wushuang guiding the way, his chances of getting the treasure and getting out were much higher.
In the surveillance room, everyone looked at each other. This was the third anomaly tonight.
