Chapter 114: 114: Questioning

It took a while for the female Veilmaster to register the fact that Simon had just talked back at her in front of the entire candidates.

She wanted to reprimand Simon and punish him because of the disrespect and because to her, if she allowed Simon to go, other candidates might believe they had the authority to talk back at her.

She had already placed herself in a position where all of the candidates knew that they couldn’t talk back at her.

But here was Simon... a boy with a Supreme Common Bloodline, a boy with no background, and a boy who was just a Lesser Demon.

Aside from him being an enigma, he had nothing above any of the other candidates, but he still had the audacity to talk back at her?

There was a part of her that wanted to reprimand and punish Simon, but there was another part of her that knew that Simon was saying the truth.

Ever since Simon stepped forward, she had been questioning him and did not treat him like other candidates.

Also, there was just something about Simon that made it seem like she was speaking to

There was a strange and tense silence as the candidates, Veilmasters, and even Simon himself stared at the female Veilmaster.

Simon let out an inward sigh.

’She has a fragile ego. If what I did is enough for you to be stunned and to start contemplating what your reaction should be, then you are disappointing.’

As somebody who had decades of experience, he could understand the thoughts of the female Veilmaster. Though, he was slightly surprised by it.

’I still have a lot if I want to survive and thrive in this second life of mine. I have to learn to be humble at times, and to be arrogant in another.’

’Since I’ve clearly hurt her ego, I have to be humble and take a step back to raise her ego once again. It would be bad for me if I cause an influential figure in the Shadowgrave Clan to dislike me even before I’m officially part of the clan.’

"Forgive me for being rude. What questions do you have for me?" Simon bowed and apologized, surprising the female Veilmaster, the two other Veilmasters, and the other candidates.

The female Veilmaster was stunned for a moment, then she looked at Simon and cleared her throat slightly.

Subconsciously, she forgot about Simon’s rudeness and had a favourable expression of him for saving her face.

"It’s fine. Are you ready to answer some of my questions?"

Simon nodded.

"Good." She nodded. "I want to know how you were able to increase your Demon Heart from the Minor rank to the Supreme rank so quickly."

Simon was not surprised when he heard this question. He expected it, and he already had an answer for it.

"I was given a crimson fruit by an Odrasil. I believe his name was Varreth."

The female Veilmaster’s eyes flashed with a glint of realization, and so did the eyes of the two Veilmasters and some of the candidates.

Meanwhile, Thorgan’s eyes were wide open in disbelief.

"Varreth you say... If that’s the case, then it’s possible. The fruit of the Odrasils is known to increase a demon’s heart rank. However..."

She paused and narrowed her eyes at Simon.

"Do you know where Varreth is? I can’t see him here to confirm if he actually gave you a fruit."

Simon’s eyes flickered with a calculating glint.

’She made sure not to mention the fact that I’m supposed to be a puppet of Varreth if I truly ate the fruit. She wants to keep such information hidden for some reason.’

Simon shook his head. "I don’t know. I was given the fruit maybe... An hour ago? I was teleported to this place when I was refining it, that’s why I appeared in a meditative pose."

Thorgan could not help himself as his mouth was opened wide in utter disbelief and shock at Simon’s lies.

Every single thing Simon was a lie, and seeing the calm expression Simon had as he lied not only in front a Veilmaster, but two Veilmasters and over a hundred candidates.

’Third brother. I admit it now. I can never best you in certain things.’

A part of Thorgan wondered if Simon had expected this and planned for it which was why he stayed in a meditative position when the crimson moon began to rise.

Meanwhile, the female Veilmaster had slightly furrowed brows as she pondered on Simon’s words.

’If Varreth gave him the fruit an hour ago but was killed after by a beast or another candidate, then it makes sense that this kid was not enslaved.’

’What a lucky kid. The Odrasil was killed while he was refining the Longevity Fruit. He gained a lot without losing anything.’

The female Veilmaster clicked her tongue with a soft shake of her head, then she focused on Simon once again.

"And what of those things wrapped around your arms. You didn’t have them before. Why do you have them now? What are they?"

Simon glanced at the Chaos Wraps. He also expected this question, and honestly, getting out of this question might prove tricky for him.

"They’re bandages. I got injured from an attack of a Dread Beast, and I was very lucky to have survived. I’m using this bandages as a means of healing my arms."

The female Veilmaster frowned with slight concern in her eyes.

"Can I see the injury."

Simon shook his head. "No. It’s healing, and removing the bandages can make it worse."

Although she wanted to say more, she decided not to.

"No problem. Get it checked and perform a proper treatment on it when you have the time."

Simon nodded, then he gestured to where Thorgan and those who passed stood.

"Can I go now?" He asked.

"Hold on." The female Veilmaster stopped him. "Last question. How did you get so many points?"

"There’a place where many candidates and beasts fought. We called it The Region of Death. I snuck around and took the condensed shadow essence from some of the corpses of the candidates and also the corpses of some beasts at the edge of the region."

"Is that so..." The female Veilmaster frowned deeply, and Simon gestured to where Thorgan and the others who passed stood.

The female Veilmaster finally relented with a wave of her hand.

"You may go."

"Thank you."
