Chapter 298: Shattered

Her surroundings became a blur and so did her vision as the only thing that she could see was the girl in the photo frame, and even she was going in and out of her vision.

Her hand that was holding the frame trembled and her breathing became short and heavy. All the memories from her childhood came rushing back to her and attacked her without any mercy.

Her face, her smile, her voice, those same words that she constantly kept telling Emily whenever the two of them met, and most importantly... the scene where she died, everything was so clear and fresh in Emily’s memories that it didn’t give her any chance to break out of their painful hold on her.

"Angel, what’s wrong?"

Kaiden’s sudden voice caused an abrupt surge of terror to shoot through Emily’s entire body and she ended up losing her hold on the photo frame. It landed on the floor and the glass immediately shattered into hundreds of pieces, just like her entire world was shattering at that moment.

"Emily!" Kaiden’s voice was filled with panic as he moved closer to her but Emily hurriedly took a couple of steps back as she mistook his loud voice for anger.

"I... I’m sorry... I’m really s-sorry... I-I didn’t... m-mean to..." Emily was almost shaking from head to toe as she kept stepping back whenever Kaiden tried to approach her.

"Emily, angel, it’s alright. I’m not mad at you. It wasn’t your fault." Kaiden sounded desperate and almost at a loss as he couldn’t decide whether to get close to her or give her some space like she wanted.

But no matter what he said, Emily’s situation only seemed to be getting worse as she kept shaking her head as if to get rid of something from her mind.

’It wasn’t your fault.’ These words kept ringing in her ears, not only because Kaiden had said them but because that was exactly what she used to tell herself after that incident to get rid of the guilt.

To prove her innocence to herself, she had told the same thing to herself every day and every night for months and years so that she could let go of the guilt.

But here she was now, just when she thought that her painful past had finally left her, that she had eventually survived it and had moved forward, she was once again proved wrong. It seemed like she could never outrun her past, nor that guilt.

"Angel..."

Kaiden was constantly calling her as he contemplated between approaching her and staying away, but he was the last person she wanted to be close with at the moment.

The thought of how he would hate her after finding out the truth filled Emily with even more despair. She didn’t want to lose him but would he forgive her after finding out about the truth. The thought kept burdening her and the more she tried to assure herself that he won’t blame her, the more she questioned her belief.

In the end, she wasn’t sure whether Kaiden’s trust in her was stronger or his love for his first mate. What if he really blamed her for not saving his first mate? What would she do if he decided to leave her? The thought was heart-wrenching and it made tears burn her eyes as she tried her very best to hold them back.

A part of her knew deep inside that it wasn’t actually her fault. She was just a little child who knew nothing about the dark world she was caught in. She was also a victim... but did that change anything? No! It still didn’t change the fact that she watched Elisa dying in front of her very eyes.

"Emily, baby, you are shaking!" Kaiden finally let go of the dilemma as he just moved forward and pulled the girl in his arms, both his heart and wolf were in despair as they couldn’t stand her condition which was only getting worse. Just what triggered her? The question kept repeating in his mind but he was unable to find the answer.

But even before his hands could have touched her shoulders, Emily pushed him away and walked past him in a hurry. It was her scream filled with pain that pulled him out of his shock and made him look at her only to find her wobbling on her feet that she had injured because of the scattered glasses. Several shards had pierced the delicate skin of her feet and blood was oozing out from the cuts.

"Emily!" He was immediately beside her, trying to help her but the woman only ended up pushing him away once again. "Stay away... please..." Her tone was filled with a plea that tugged on his heart.

"Angel, I have no idea what this is all about and I won’t ask you anything if that’s what you want. But can you please not push me away, I need to heal your injuries." Kaiden tried to use a calm tone to get her attention but it didn’t seem to be working as his one step in her direction made her step back several steps without any care for her injuries or the shards of the glass that were still stuck in her feet.

"I... I h-have to go... I n’t need to-to go..." Emily muttered under her breath as she looked around the room to find the door but Kaiden was immediately there to stop her before she could have taken a single step in the direction of it.

"Let go!" She struggled against his hold and tried to run towards the door but the shards stuck in her feet were causing too much pain for her to take even a single step forward, not only that but she could no longer find the strength to fight against Kaiden. Still, she knew one thing - she had to get away from him because she was feeling suffocating.

Having no other choice, she turned to face Kaiden as she whispered, "I’m so sorry." She didn’t give him the chance to even progress her words before she called upon her powers and teleported away.
