The Billionaire's Rental Wife Is A Hot Shot-Chapter 94: They Are Dead
Chapter 94: They Are Dead
Evelyn’s mind raced at the man’s words, trying to process the shocking news and get clues of it. The possibility that... Gracia might be alive... It sent a shiver down her spine, her heart almost afraid to believe it.
Her thoughts raced back to the moments with Mariam, the woman had babbled seemingly nonsensical words about Gracia’s death, and now with Reema gone, Evelyn couldn’t shake the suspicion that there was more to the story. It unsettled her, making her question not just about Gracia’s death but everything she had chosen to accept about her past, her birth until now.
Avery equally stunned came out of her daze. She quickly thanked the middle-aged man and turned to her friend. Placing a hand on Evelyn’s arm, she brought her back to the present and suggested softly, "We need to call Damien! He will surely help us find them quickly."
Evelyn nodded, her mind too clouded to argue. Avery immediately dialed Damien’s number, but even after a few rings, he didn’t pick up.
"This bastard..." Avery cursed under her breath as she tried again. This time, Damien picked up for a second before hanging up almost immediately. Avery stared at the phone in disbelief, her frustration at its peak. "I swear, he is doing it on purpose!"
Evelyn couldn’t help but smile, their catfight cutting through her tension. "You did the same last week when he was merely trying to pick you up at Zevian’s demand." She took Damien’s side, recalling how Avery had tortured him for a few minutes at the hospital before going downstairs.
Avery scowled and asked Evelyn to try, "You should call him! "
Evelyn smiled and took out her phone to call Damien. And he picked it up right after a few mere seconds. "Yes, Evelyn?"
Evelyn smiled and closed her friend’s mouth who started cursing out very loud. They were still on the street. Once reaching the car, Evelyn took a deep breath and started, "About the mission I asked you to abandon a few days ago..."
Damien hummed in response on the other end, letting Evelyn finish her part. He had insisted on continuing his investigation into Evelyn’s birth revelation, but in her fear of facing her real parents, one who had abandoned her at the orphanage before William and his mother had taken her in, she had told him to stop. But now, with Reema’s sudden disappearance and the gnawing suspicion about Gracia’s death, Evelyn’s instincts had come roaring back to life, forcing her to face whatever was in store about the painfully odd past.
"I need you to continue it," Evelyn said, her voice firmer now. "Reema has emptied her home. I need you to find her. Find out where she and Mariam are right now."
There was a pause, and then Damien responded with his usual confidence. "Alright. I’ll have something by tomorrow."
"Thank you," Evelyn said quietly, relief filling her chest. She hung up the phone and sighed deeply, hoping for good news.
Avery gave her a reassuring smile, trying to lighten the mood. "As much as he is an asshole, he always keeps up his word. So, I am sure we will get something by sunrise."
Evelyn nodded, but the unease still lingered. The idea that she might not be an orphan after all, that there were secrets hidden deep in her past, gnawed at her. But for now, she had done what she could and they could just hope for the truth to unveil itself. After all, no one could hide it even if they had to bury it under a mountain of lies.
"I think I’ll go home now," Evelyn murmured, sitting in the shotgun seat.
Avery blinked in surprise. Buckling her seatbelt, she asked, "You’re not coming to the Reign Mansion?"
Evelyn shook her head. "No, I am gonna take some time for myself."
Avery smiled and starting the engine, she teased, "Alright! I will drop you off at your house then. And also send your hubby back to you soon."
Evelyn chuckled and nodded in response. "I will greatly appreciate that," she added, needing it after such a shitty week.
-------
Evelyn stepped into her home, the familiar vibe easing her tense nerves. Her emotions were still in turmoil, her mind spinning with possibilities about who she was and whether Gracia was truly dead or alive. She sighed, sinking into the couch and leaning her head back, closing her eyes. The peaceful silence was a welcome contrast to the endless running between hospitals and the tension of the past few days.
She hadn’t spent enough time here recently—this space where she could relax, either alone or with her daughter.
Just as the thought crossed her mind, Evelyn heard the familiar chirpy voice from the entrance. Her tired eyes lit up at the sight of her little bear in Agatha’s arms.
Kiana who was busy yapping about how cruel Yael was to her nanny felt someone’s presence in the hall. She looked ahead and her eyes instantly widened in surprise to see her Mommy home. Wriggling out of Agatha’s arms, she bolted in Evelyn’s direction.
"Mommy!"
Evelyn’s face brightened instantly with a huge smile. She opened her arms wide, catching Kiana in a playful tackle. Both mother and daughter laughed as they stumbled backward, hitting the couch in a warm embrace.
Kiana looked up at her mother, her small face scrunched in curiosity. "I heard Uncle Dom woke up and he’s not sick anymore."
Evelyn smiled and nodded in response. Adjusting Kiana’s tousled hair, she replied "He’s still sick, but out of danger now."
Kiana nodded, but her little brow furrowed in concern. "Can Emy and I visit him? Poor Emy cries and misses him so much."
Evelyn’s heart melted at her daughter’s words. She smiled and stroked Kiana’s cheek gently. "We’ll visit him tomorrow, but only if Dr. Mathew says it’s okay." He had pressed how Dominic might not remember everything just yet, and he might forget everything when he wakes again and they couldn’t overwhelm him.
Kiana beamed with happiness, hugging her mother tightly again. "I missed you soooooo much, Mommy."
Evelyn chuckled softly, kissing the top of Kiana’s head. "I missed you too, baby."
After a moment, Evelyn playfully asked, "How about we make your favorite muffins tonight?"
Kiana’s face lit up with excitement, her earlier worries melting away. "Yes! Yes!" she exclaimed, hopping off the couch.
Evelyn smiled and picked her up to change her into comfortable clothes. Though she was tired, spending time with her daughter was the best solution to all her problems. Only if Zevian was here too. She thought, walking upstairs for their family time.
The evening slowly gave way to night, the once somber house was now filled with relief again, having been brightened by Kiana’s laughter and happiness. Even the staff were happy to witness them playing around, glad that Evelyn was able to find some respite even in the chaos that still surrounded the Reign Family.
In the master room, Evelyn cradled Kiana in her arms, a soft smile spread across her face. Kiana had fallen asleep mid-conversation, her small body pressed against Evelyn’s chest, her breathing soft and peaceful.
The door creaked open after a few long minutes, and Evelyn looked up to see Zevian walking in. His expression softened as he took in the sight of his wife and daughter, his shoulders sagging with exhaustion.
"How’s Natalie?" Evelyn asked as she gently moved Kiana to the side, getting off the bed. She walked to him, her face etched with worry.
Zevian sighed deeply in response. Moving closer, he hugged her tightly, his face buried in her neck. "She’s... okay. I think."
Evelyn hugged him back, feeling the tension melt away from his body as he relaxed into her. She softly patted his head, appropriating his strength to handle everything so calmly. They stood there for a moment, just holding each other, finding comfort in the simple touch.
"Had Dinner?" Zevian asked, pulling back just enough to look at her, with his hands still wrapped around her waits.
"I did," Evelyn replied with a soft smile. "Kiana and I made muffins."
Zevian smiled, his gaze shifting to their sleeping daughter. "Good. Let’s get some sleep."
Evelyn nodded with a smile, watching as he moved to the other side of the bed and gently settled in next to Kiana. She followed, tucking herself in beside them. For the first time in what felt like ages, they were all together again, their little family back to their usual routine.
Kiana stirred in her sleep, her small hand reaching out until it found Zevian. "Daddy?" she murmured, her voice heavy with sleep.
Zevian smiled, kissing the top of her head. "I’m here, sweetheart."
Kiana smiled in her sleep, snuggling closer to him. Evelyn watched them, her heart full of warmth.
"Goodnight," she whispered to Zevian, turning off the light and sinking into the warmth of their bed. But just as she began to drift off, her phone buzzed on the nightstand.
It was Damien!
Evelyn carefully slipped out of bed, not wanting to wake Kiana or Zevian who was fast asleep. She picked up her phone and stepped out onto the balcony.
She answered quickly, stepping into the cool night air. "Yes, Damien?" fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
"We found them. But..."Damien’s voice was hesitant on the other end, making Evelyn’s heart skip a beat.
"But what?" Evelyn exclaimed, frowning in confusion.
There was a long pause before Damien finally spoke, his voice strained. "She’s dead, Evelyn."
"What?!"
"Both Reema and Mariam died in an accident this morning."
