The Billionaire Stands Up for Me-Chapter 175: Finally Home!
With this phone call, I finally felt much more at ease.
I could even sleep at night.
After the new year, there are still two fashion shows in the country, and I’ll be so busy at the start of the year that I’ll be run off my feet.
It might actually be a good thing, letting work fill my entire mind, so I won’t miss Daniel Carter as much, or feel like time is dragging by.
Right before getting off work, I received a landline phone call.
"Hello."
"Hello, is this Lily Miller?" a polite yet authoritative voice inquired from the other end.
"Yes, may I ask who’s calling?"
"Lady Miller, we are from national security. Is Mason Miller your brother? He has been arrested on suspicion of espionage, and we need the family to cooperate with our investigation. Can you come to the nearest police station?"
Holding my phone, I felt as if the sky had fallen upon hearing this!
Mason Miller a spy?!
He’s been a meek, unaccomplished person, coddled into uselessness by Jason Miller and Shirley Turner—could he have the guts to be a spy?
After the shock, I immediately thought of how serious the charge was.
If he was confirmed to be a spy, everyone in the Miller Family would surely be investigated.
With my relationship with Daniel Carter, would he be implicated too?
"Lady Miller, are you listening?" the other side politely asked when I had not responded for a long time.
I snapped back to reality, "Yes, is it possible...there’s been a mistake?"
"Not likely. We’ve been surveilling for a while, and only nabbed him now with evidence. We understand how you feel, but please cooperate with the investigation."
"Okay." My heart was chaotic, yet I steadied myself for a moment, thinking about the nearest police station.
"Alright, we’ll head over there, and please come in to make a statement."
After hanging up, I covered my face with both hands, trying to digest this information.
I wanted to call Daniel Carter, but when I dialed, it couldn’t be reached.
My mind suddenly cleared!
In fact, I shouldn’t tell him about this, otherwise it would only cause bigger trouble if he knew.
So, I quickly tidied up and headed to the police station.
Upon meeting with the national security personnel, I handed over my identification as per procedure.
"Good day, Lady Miller. We’ve contacted your parents. Your father is currently serving a sentence for financial crimes, so we will reach him later. Today, we want to understand the situation from you first."
"Alright, I will fully cooperate."
By now, blaming fate was useless; I had already prepared for a breakup with Daniel Carter.
Just waiting for his return.
The national security staff questioned me for an hour, but they didn’t obtain any useful information.
And through my conversation with them, I learned that Mason Miller recently visited many military bases in the country, took a large number of photographs, and uploaded them to a foreign domain website.
He was apprehended while lingering outside Daniel Carter’s munitions factory and illegally using a drone for remote photography.
Hearing the munitions factory’s code name, the nerves in my brain tightened sharply.
How could it be such a coincidence?
Of all places, it had to be where Daniel Carter worked?
I surmised he was probably guided and used by someone.
And the person likely to exploit or even frame him... a speculation flashed through my mind.
"Lady Miller, you should know the severity of this matter. Please be honest," the national security personnel solemnly reminded.
I was sincere: "My family is special. I have never been on good terms with my family members; we rarely communicate. I really don’t know what Mason Miller was doing outside."
The two personnel exchanged glances and whispered before nodding.
"Alright then, Mason Miller strongly requested to speak with you. You can communicate with him on speakerphone." The national security personnel finished speaking, took out his phone, and dialed the number.
After a brief exchange, the national security personnel turned on the speakerphone and placed it on the table.
Mason Miller’s voice came from the other side: "Lily, sis... are you there?"
Listening to Mason’s voice, hatred surged in my heart, and I uttered a single word in a low voice: "Yes."
"Sis, please save me, I was framed. Adrian Gordon told me about a quick money-making method, saying I could earn money just by taking and sending photos. I thought there was such a good deal and figured I’d try it... I didn’t expect he was setting me up!"
My heart trembled; just as I suspected, it was Adrian Gordon!
How many traps has he laid behind the scenes to retaliate against me?
I thought of that playboy heir who had always looked down on me, now actually calling me sister willingly. I knew he was really scared!
However, I had no sympathy whatsoever.
"This is espionage; I can’t save you. You’d better cooperate with the national security’s investigation!" I didn’t want to talk more with him, I was even seething with anger.
Adrian Gordon was too ruthless.
Just like he said before: if he couldn’t have it, he’d destroy it.
"Sis! You can’t do this! Sis—you must have a way to save me, go find your boyfriend, he’s so..."
Hearing Mason mention Daniel Carter, my entire body shuddered, and I quickly hung up the call before he could finish!
Anxious heartbeat, my brain’s blood vessels pounding as if they were about to explode!
Suddenly, I deeply understood Mrs. Carter’s concern.
I was too naive, too greedy. How could a little ugly duckling like me, stuck in the muddy swamps, even dream of someone with a noble background like Daniel Carter?
Nostrils aching, my heart was trembling, filled with both anger and fear.
I needed to clear things up with Daniel Carter right away, so he wouldn’t be dragged down by this matter any further.
After bidding farewell to my colleagues at the National Security Bureau, I walked out of the police station and got into my car.
For a while, my mind was still muddled and confused.
I suddenly thought of that bastard Adrian Gordon and picked up my phone to call him.
However, I couldn’t get through.
Suddenly, it hit me—he must have been caught already!
He’s truly a devil from hell!
Having no way out himself, he had to drag others down too, just to break me and Daniel Carter apart, just to make me miserable.
Anger surged within me; if Adrian Gordon were in front of me right now, I’d wish I could pull him down with me, perish together!
The phone rang, snapping me out of my fiery rage.
I looked at the phone and saw that it was Wennie Lane calling.
"Hey, Wennie..."
Wennie Lane asked, "Are you off work? It’s Nora Saunders’ birthday today. Are you done with work? Come and join us tonight."
"No, please help me explain to Nora Saunders that I’ll invite her for dinner another day to make amends." I really wasn’t in the mood to attend a birthday party right now.
Wennie Lane knew I wasn’t feeling good lately and tried hard to persuade me, "I heard from Melissa that Mr. Carter is on a business trip. It would be boring for you to go back alone. Why not come out to have some fun and cheer up? That way you won’t be constantly thinking about him."
"No, I’ve been quite busy lately; I need to work overtime."
"Alright then..."
After hanging up the phone, I started the car to head home.
Halfway through the drive, Nora Saunders called.
"Lily Miller, ever since you started dating, you haven’t hung out with us. Got a boyfriend, so you don’t need your girl pals anymore? It’s fine usually, but today is my birthday—you must come!" Nora Saunders urged exuberantly, almost commanding.
Seeing them invite me several times, I couldn’t really refuse and had to agree.
I found a nearby luxury store and bought a bracelet, wrapped it in a gift box, and then changed my route to the party venue.
I arrived late; the party was already underway, and the candles on the cake had been lit.
Nora Saunders looked beautiful today, surrounded and blessed by everyone, making her birthday wish before cutting the cake.
Feeling down, I sat aside, gloomily drinking.
Wennie Lane came over and nudged me with her elbow, "What’s wrong? Looking so listless. Just a few days without seeing your sweetheart, and you act like you’ve lost half your life."
I swirled my glass of red wine, my gaze becoming increasingly blurry.
Once my friend finished speaking, I hazily replied, "Soon, it’ll cost me my whole life."
Wennie Lane frowned, "What do you mean?"
I tilted my head back and finished my drink, then dead-heartedly said, "I’m breaking up with him."
"Why?" Wennie Lane was startled; thankfully, everyone else was caught up in singing and dancing, paying no attention to us.
"Lily Miller, you’re drunk, talking nonsense. Before, in Veyrona, you two were inseparable. How come you’re suddenly breaking up? Just because he’s on a business trip and couldn’t be with you?" Wennie Lane sat up seriously, staring at me.
"No..." I shook my head and, after a moment of silence, selectively told her about Mason Miller’s situation. "Adrian Gordon coaxed Mason Miller into photographing military zones to upload on foreign websites, and he got caught. You know how serious this is. I was also called in for investigation by national security this afternoon; if I don’t break up with Daniel Carter, it will certainly drag him into this."
"What?!" Wennie Lane was even more shocked, "Adrian Gordon is simply inhuman! He did this deliberately, just to break you two apart!"
"Yes, but there’s nothing we can do. I can’t let Daniel Carter be involved in such a case; it would have enormous negative impacts on him and his family."
Wennie Lane looked at me with sympathy and then squeezed my arm gently, "I understand you... The deeper you love someone, the less you want to drag them down. Being with you was already quite stressful for Mr. Carter."
"Yes..."
I replied briefly, grabbed the bottle, and continued pouring wine.
Wennie Lane stopped me, "Don’t drink anymore; getting drunk will make you uncomfortable. If Mr. Carter comes home and sees, he’ll be even more worried."
"He... He’s also been facing trouble recently, probably won’t be back anytime soon."
"What do you mean?"
I wasn’t drunk yet, knowing that this wasn’t something that could be casually discussed, so I just tilted my head back and gulped down wine.
By the time the phone rang, I was already in a half-dazed state.
Wennie Lane picked up my phone and excitedly nudged me, "Lily Miller! It’s Mr. Carter’s call! Lily Miller!"
I opened my eyes and looked at the phone she handed over, my eyes widening instantly.
Daniel Carter called?
Could it be that he’s back!
I grabbed the phone, "Hello!"
"Lily, aren’t you at home?"
Daniel Carter’s warm, deep voice came through, startling me to sit up suddenly.
"You’re back?"
"Yes, I’m at the house, but no one answered when I knocked, only heard the parrot shouting."
His tone was amused, and I could also hear the barking in the background.
"I’m out, but I’m heading back now, I’ll be home soon!" I grabbed my phone and stood up; in my haste, I almost fell, but thankfully Wennie Lane and another friend supported me.
