The Bigshot Married Himself to the Heiress-Chapter 531 - 532: The Briggs Family Members
In the hospital ward, Sienna Johnson stood at the entrance to Pauline Briggs’s room. She took a deep breath and was about to knock and enter when she overheard Pauline Briggs crying from inside.
"...When will you people stop? I’ve said it already, my suicide has nothing to do with Sienna. I chose to die to be with Brother Dexter."
"Who are you fooling? You want to be with Dexter Johnson, but Dexter has been dead for so many years. You didn’t choose to be with him then, and now you want to?"
The old woman did not believe it; she considered it just an excuse from Pauline.
"Yes, in your eyes, I am capricious and useless. I do everything on a whim, completely reckless. When Dexter died, Samara was so young, and the Johnson family was in crisis. Then Sienna suddenly returned, bringing a daughter with her... Later, I found out that it was that bitch Sabrina Johnson who killed Dexter. Dexter couldn’t rest in peace! How could you expect me to die then?"
"I know I’m useless. I can’t help with anything; I only cause trouble."
"Pauline, you misunderstand. Mom didn’t mean that; she’s just worried about you," Second Uncle advised. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
"I’m also worried about you. Your dad and I are old enough to be in our graves. We’re supposed to be taking care of ourselves and not worrying about anything, but because of you, I’m constantly worried."
"Do you know, when your dad and I heard you attempted suicide, we were terrified..." The old woman poked her daughter’s head, her eyes filled with exasperation.
"That’s because you misunderstood Sienna."
"How did we misunderstand her? That little girl has no manners; she keeps calling you Madam Johnson. You’re her biological mother, does she have to embarrass you like this? When she comes, let your dad teach her a lesson. That girl, she looks difficult to deal with, and you’re too soft. She’ll definitely bully you in the future..."
"You dare?" Pauline Briggs fumed.
"My dear daughter, we’re just trying to look out for you."
"She is my daughter, my own flesh and blood! If any of you dare to bully her, I will fight you to the death! Besides, I don’t want to live anymore," Pauline said defiantly.
The old man flared up. "What kind of nonsense are you spouting? Fight to the death? With whom? We’re your parents! Are you going to fight your own parents to the death?"
Pauline Briggs cried louder. "Just let me die."
The old woman couldn’t bear to see her beloved daughter cry. Although she felt her daughter was in the wrong, the moment Pauline cried, the old woman’s heart softened. She turned to reprimand her husband, "Why are you scolding her? What has she done to you? Look how scared you’ve made her! She’s always been timid. If anything happens to her, you’ll be burying the two of us!"
The old man was exasperated by this mother and daughter.
"An indulgent mother spoils the child! It’s all your fault for spoiling her!"
"I spoiled her? As if you didn’t?"
The old man fell silent. He might be powerful and prestigious outside, but at home, his status plummeted. His wife and daughter had him completely under their thumbs.
The old woman coaxed, "Pauline, dear, don’t cry. I scolded your dad. He won’t dare scold you anymore."
Second Uncle watched with a grim expression. It had always been like this, even when they were young. In the Briggs family, whoever made Pauline cry, regardless of who was right or wrong, would be the one punished in the end.
When he and his elder brother were young, they had received quite a few beatings because of Pauline. The old man was so harsh with his punishments that anyone who didn’t know would think they were picked up from a garbage bin.
"Sienna?" Second Uncle glanced at the entrance of the ward, and through the glass window on the door, he saw Sienna Johnson. The moment their eyes met, Sienna had nowhere to hide.
Sienna had been hesitating, wondering if she should enter later, but she hadn’t expected Second Uncle to spot her. As she pushed the door open and walked in, she immediately felt the hostile stares from the Briggs family.
Maintaining a smile, she said to the Briggs family, "I brought Mom something to eat." Holding the food container, she slowly walked towards Pauline under their watchful eyes.
"The food from the nearby Blissful Hotel is quite good. We’ve already ordered takeout from there, so you don’t need to bring anything next time. You’re pregnant, and you have so much to handle at the company... It’s too hard on you," Pauline said thoughtfully.
Pauline was different from the petulant woman who had been arguing with her parents moments ago. Now, she looked at her daughter lovingly, her eyes full of concern for Sienna.
"Actually, Adrian did most of it. I just helped him a bit..." Speak of the devil, Adrian, having parked the car, followed her in.
The Briggs family members were all quite hostile. He had to come in and protect his woman; what if they bullied her?
"Grandpa, Grandma, Uncle, Second Uncle..." Adrian greeted everyone.
Except for Second Uncle, none of them gave him a pleasant look. However, Adrian didn’t care about them, so he didn’t react to their cold stares.
The food container Sienna brought held a generous amount. She served Pauline a bowl of crucian carp and tofu soup, then asked the elderly Briggs couple, "Grandpa, Grandma, would you like some?"
"Give it to Pauline; look how thin she’s gotten."
The old woman looked at her daughter with pity, while Pauline focused only on eating, not even offering any to the others from the Briggs family.
The room fell silent. Second Uncle was a talkative man. Looking at the handsome and elegant Adrian, he was quite curious about this man who had married into their family. He had heard Adrian was from Abyanabad and an orphan.
"Adrian, what kind of business are you in?"
"I opened a security company and a golf course."
He only mentioned part of his business in Sileria City.
Uncle looked at Adrian strangely, his lips moving as if he wanted to say something, but he held back. Adrian pretended not to notice.
Adrian didn’t need him to say it; he could guess what Uncle wanted to ask. He was probably just curious where the money came from.
In the Orienta, marrying into a family is a very shameful thing. Men only marry into a family when they have no other prospects. So, knowing he had married into the family, they all looked at him as if he were a kept man.
This Uncle, hearing he owned a security company and a golf course, must be wondering: Where did the money come from? Was it Sienna’s? These people were ridiculous. He, Adrian Desmond, when had he ever stooped so low as to be supported by a woman? The only reason he had agreed to marry into the family was because he loved Sienna Johnson. He was from Abyanabad; marrying into a family or not meant little to him. Anyway, he and Sienna were husband and wife, legally bound, and no one could take her from him.
"Adrian, go buy me a pack of cigarettes," the old man suddenly said.
They were all smart people. Hearing this, Adrian knew the old man wanted to send him away. Adrian glanced at Sienna. She nodded, so Adrian said, "Okay, Grandpa. What kind of cigarettes do you smoke?"
"Just buy any pack."
"I’m on my way."
