Chapter 8: THE SERPENT’S SMILE

Seris’ smile lingered in the dim corridor, sharp as a blade hidden in silk.

Amaya felt the cold warning ripple through her core.

Leo felt it too — the subtle shift, the tremble beneath her skin, the way her inner light recoiled at the serpent woman’s presence.

His stance changed immediately.

The Beastlord drew her closer, positioning Amaya behind his arm in a movement that was instinctual, territorial, and absolute.

"Lady Seris," he said slowly, "you will not lay a hand on her."

Seris’ silver brows lifted. "My lord, you sound as if I intend to harm the girl."

"You do."

"Of course not," she purred. "I only wish to confirm the extent of her corruption."

Amaya stiffened. "I’m not corrupted."

Seris tilted her head, studying her with unsettling calm.

"A Shadow Devourer touched you, dear. No one walks away from that unscarred."

Leo’s aura spiked at the implication — frost cracking beneath his boots, the lanterns flickering as the air chilled.

Seris clasped her hands politely.

"The Council sent for me," she continued, unbothered by the frigid wind beginning to coil around leo. "A specialist is required. You know this."

"What I know," leo growled, "is that your tests involve pain."

Amaya’s stomach knotted.

Seris didn’t deny it.

She simply smiled.

"Magic is not measured with kindness."

Leo stepped forward just enough to force Seris back a half-step.

The movement was calculated. A warning.

"No tests."

"My lord—"

"No."

Seris’ expression cooled.

"leo," she said softly, "if her core destabilizes, she could detonate and take half the palace with her."

Leo bared his fangs. "I will stabilize her."

"How long can you keep that up?" Seris asked.

Amaya’s breath caught.

He didn’t answer.

Seris turned her gaze to Amaya now — no longer assessing in curiosity, but calculating value.

As if examining a rare beast pelt.

"You’ve been here only a week," Seris said gently. "You don’t understand the danger your existence poses."

Leo snarled. "She poses no danger."

Seris’ eyes narrowed. "You don’t even see it, do you?"

She stepped closer — not to leo, but to Amaya.

"You hold a Mystic Core," Seris whispered. "Humans don’t have those. Only ancient beasts and highborn bloodlines do. And yet you—"

Her hand lifted toward Amaya’s chest.

Leo moved so fast the entire hallway shook.

Claws out. Shoulders low. Aura flaring like a blizzard storm.

If Seris touched Amaya, someone would die.

Seris froze mid-reach.

"...So protective," she murmured.

Leo’s voice was a harsh whisper, trembling not with fear, but barely contained violence.

"Touch her, Seris. And I swear, there will not be enough of you left to bury."

Seris lowered her hand.

Slowly.

Gracefully.

As if she wanted to show she wasn’t afraid.

But Amaya noticed something in the Snow Serpent’s eyes — a flicker, almost imperceptible.

Not fear.

Interest.

Dangerous interest.

She’s curious about leo’s reaction... to me.

Seris stepped back at last, slipping into the cold elegance she wore like armor.

"Very well," she said. "If you insist on delaying the examination, the Council will accept it—for tonight."

Leo’s jaw tightened at the implied threat.

Seris dipped her head in a graceful bow.

"But do not mistake the Council’s patience," she added. "It is not endless."

She turned away, her long silver braid swaying behind her as she walked down the moonlit hall, heels tapping like the tick of a clock counting down.

Her voice drifted back to them.

"When she breaks, my lord...

I hope you are strong enough to survive it."

The corridor went silent again.

Amaya felt something icy crawl up her spine.

Leo didn’t move.

Didn’t breathe.

Not until Seris’ presence was completely gone.

Then he exhaled — a long, ragged breath he had clearly been holding.

His claws retracted.

His shoulders lowered by a fraction.

And when he finally turned to Amaya, the fury in his eyes had been replaced by something worse.

Fear.

"Are you hurt?" he asked quietly.

"No."

"Did she touch you?"

"No."

"Did her aura affect your core?"

"I..." Amaya hesitated. "I think my system shielded me."

His eyes softened just slightly.

"Good."

But the tension in his muscles didn’t ease.

Leo lifted her wrist gently — with surprising tenderness for someone who had just threatened to commit murder in a hallway — checking her pulse against his thumb.

Her heart was still racing.

"I scared you," she said softly.

He froze.

His thumb stilled over her pulse point.

"You didn’t scare me."

"You looked—"

"Not you," he corrected. "Seris."

He swallowed tightly.

"She is not to be trusted."

"I figured."

He shook his head. "You don’t understand. Seris is not simply cunning. She is—"

The palace lanterns flickered.

Leo’s ears twitched sharply.

---

A disturbance.

Not loud. But wrong.

Leo’s head snapped upward, sensing it instantly.

Amaya felt it a heartbeat later — a faint ripple through the corridor, like air being sucked out.

"What was that?" she whispered.

Kael didn’t answer.

He grabbed her hand and pulled her with him, moving fast.

His pace was brutal, not meant for humans, and he forced himself to slow only because her legs couldn’t match his stride.

The ripple came again.

Stronger.

"What is it?" Amaya asked breathlessly.

Leo’s expression darkened.

"A tear in the wards."

"Isn’t that... bad?"

"It means someone is trying to breach the inner palace. Again."

Her pulse jumped.

"The Devourer—?"

"No," leo said coldly. "Something else."

They rounded a corner—

And froze.

A guard lay unconscious against the wall, slumped in a heap of armor and fur. His aura faint, flickering like a candle about to go out.

Amaya gasped. "leo—"

"I know," he said.

He dropped to one knee beside the guard, checking his breathing. The man lived — barely.

Leo’s eyes narrowed.

"No claws," he muttered. "No wounds. Not a beast."

"Then what?"

"Magic." His voice went low. "Human magic."

Amaya’s heart stuttered.

"That’s impossible," she whispered. "I’m the only human here."

Leo rose slowly.

"No," he said softly. "You’re the only human the palace knows about."

---

His fingers tightened around her hand.

"We’re returning to my chambers," he said. "Now."

"But—"

"Now."

His tone left no room for argument.

They moved fast, aura flaring behind him like a shield of frost. Guards jolted at his presence as he passed, scrambling to stand straighter. Some followed them, others ran to secure the breached wards.

The palace had gone from too quiet...

to tense and alert.

Amaya felt eyes on them everywhere.

She hated it.

By the time they reached leo’s private quarters, her heart was pounding.

Kael shut the doors behind them and immediately placed his palm against the frost-carved wall.

A shimmering barrier rose around the entire room — thick, impenetrable, glowing with the mark of the Beastlord.

Amaya swallowed. "Is it really that dangerous?"

Leo didn’t answer immediately.

He walked to her and cupped her face gently in both hands.

His thumbs stroked beneath her eyes — slow, grounding, unbearably tender.

"You are being hunted," he said quietly.

She shivered. "I know."

"No," he said, lowering his forehead to hers. "You don’t."

His breath brushed her lips.

"You are being hunted by someone inside this palace."

Her stomach dropped.

Leo’s fingers slid down to her shoulders, gripping them as if anchoring himself.

"You are not safe," he whispered, "unless you are with me."

The bond pulsed between them.

Hard.

Hot.

Undeniable.

"leo..."

His breath trembled — a rare crack in his control.

"I almost lost you tonight," he murmured into her hair. "And when Seris reached for you, I—"

His voice died.

She realized something then.

He wasn’t just angry.

He was terrified.

Not of Seris.

Not of the Council.

Not even of the Shadow Devourer.

But of losing her.

Amaya lifted her hands and placed them over his, pulling them gently from her shoulders and holding them between them.

"I’m here," she said softly. "I’m not going anywhere."

His eyes flickered — silver, stormy, undone.

For a moment, he simply looked at her.

Like he was memorizing her face.

Her warmth.

Her existence.

Then—

The system chimed.

Not cold.

Not mechanical.

Clear. Strong. Urgent.

[CRITICAL ALERT] [FOREIGN PRESENCE DETECTED] [IDENTITY: UNKNOWN HUMAN] [STATUS: HOSTILE INTENT CONFIRMED]

Amaya’s breath hitched.

"leo—"

He heard the chime.

He felt the spike of fear through their bond.

His voice dropped to a deadly whisper.

"Where?"

She swallowed, her core pulsing toward the direction like a compass.

"...Here," she breathed.

Leo’s eyes hardened.

"Behind the ward?"

"No," she whispered. "Inside the room."

The frost barrier flickered.

A shadow moved across the ceiling.

And leo’s claws came out instantly.

"Behind me," he growled.

Amaya obeyed.

The ceiling shimmered—

A shape dropped down—

And leo lunged with a roar that shook the entire palace.
