The Alpha's Omega Mate-Chapter 114: A child and her mother.
~Zarek’s POV~
My hands shook with rage—maybe not rage but jealousy— as I strode through the gates of the pack’s hospital, and as I walked through, a few people around dropped their heads in respect, bowing as they murmured greetings under their breath.
I vaguely remember acknowledging them as I hurriedly walked past, and this is because all of my attention was solely on one woman. One woman who was going to have me killed pretty soon.
One woman whose stubbornness and innocence— two completely polar traits— was driving me nuts.
Dahlia.
My frown deepened when I noticed the chaos in the hospital, and what was worse was when I bumped into someone.
Drogon.
I cocked my eyebrows at him, remembering that I had asked him to check on Nyx earlier, but I said no words and continued to make my way through the crowd, now ignoring the passersby who kept stopping to either bow or murmur their usual; "Alpha." Or "Your Grace." at me.
Drogon took my silence as asking him to come with me because then he followed closely behind me, only stopping by the door of Dahlia’s room when I stepped inside.
"Zareeeq!" Amara’s usual jolly voice momentarily snapped me out of my rage, but before I could react, she rushed into my legs, hugging both of them excitedly with her dainty arms.
I still do not know what kind of hold this child has on me, and I also do not understand it, for as soon as she hugged me, all of my initial anger disappeared. Hell, I could even swear that most of the jealousy I felt earlier went away just as fast as my anger did.
Her eyes flashed with excitement when I crouched to her level, playfully ruffling her hair as she squealed; "I missed you, Zareeq!"
"I missed you too. How are you?"
Without warning, and without as much as a hint, she bounded into my arms, wrapping her arms around my neck as she beamed the brightest smile at me. "I am fine!" She answered, making me smile back as she was too difficult to resist.
I guess she will never like any of her mother’s suitors as much as she likes me...
’Or maybe she’s like that with every one of them?’ Moartea asked, causing me to instantly roll my eyes in rage.
’No, she’s not.’
"Alpha," this time, it was Dahlia and two other women who seemed stunned by Amara’s and my rapport greeted me in unison, whilst bowing their heads. But for some reason, their voices did not grate on my nerves like everyone else’s on my way here.
Or was this just another of Dahlia’s effects making me feel suddenly restful?
The girl who I’ve recently noticed as one of Dahlia’s friends— Sadie— quickly bowed again, and this time with a voice barely above a whisper, she muttered; "I’ll take my leave now, your Grace."
Her voice sounded innocent, but fuck me, I didn’t miss the tinge of giddiness that laced just beneath it, dripping off each word like honey. I also didn’t miss the way her face coloured brightly when she exchanged glances with Dahlia.
Dahlia smiled at her.
And that smile— even though it wasn’t directed at me— warmed my heart.
"Amara!"
Without another word, the girl walked out with a royally pissed Amara trudging behind her whilst looking like one who’s been asked to walk up to the slaughter.
Amara waved one more time at me before silently disappearing out of the room. And I turned to Dahlia. "How do you do?"
The fiery haired woman laced her fingers together shyly and dropped her gaze. My racing heart stopped pounding when it finally occurred to me that now, she was standing on her own feet; and that made me somewhat relieved. Hell, for a moment, I almost feared that she’d lost her ability to walk— not like that it would change anything.
"I am fine, Alpha." She muttered with her head still ducked.
I opened my mouth just then to say something when suddenly, a dramatic cough came from a corner of the room, and my eyes thinned when I glared up at whoever it was that had interrupted me, but I instantly paused when I noticed that it was grandma Lupe.
I smiled. "Is this you, Grandma?" I asked brightly, noticing the way Dahlia’s jaw dropped in surprise.
"You know each other?" She asked softly and I chuckled before glancing at the older woman whose eyes were alight with mischief.
I nodded once. "Yes, I do. I know everyone in my pack, especially the most interesting ones."
’Crazy ones’
There were a lot of people who would swear that Grandma Lupe was crazy, but I knew otherwise. I’ve seen otherwise and I’ve been close to the woman enough to detect how there wasn’t even a single ’insane trait’ in her blood.
However, I do not know what Dahlia feels about her so now, I cannot help but wonder what in Tartarus must be going through her head right now, as she watched us with eagle eyes.
Grandma Lupe gave a small twirl, and my breath hitched with relief because for some reason, she looked way healthier than she’s ever looked in years. She smiled at me, winked at Dahlia, and bowed; "I’d love to give you both some privacy son." She muttered in a voice that gave away just how excited she was.
What the hell is happening?
"Grandmama Lupe, you’re not fully recovered enough to walk around yet!" Dahlia turned to snap at the woman, but I didn’t miss the rosy blush on her cheeks or the way her pupils seemed dilated. My grin widened.
"Oh child, I’m old enough to take care of myself! And trust me, I’m healed enough to walk a few miles without collapsing!" The older woman dismissed Dahlia jokingly, and even though I saw her roll her eyes at Grandma Lupe, I still didn’t miss the worry in her eyes, and the way her hands subconsciously shot out to catch her when she stumbled.
They liked each other.
Grandma Lupe gracefully left the room shortly afterwards, leaving Dahlia and I to stare at each other in awkward silence.
My wolf, ever the idiot, snarled at me to make small talk. He pestered me for storming in here only to have my tongue tied as soon as I caught a whiff of Dahlia’s intoxicating scent.
And Hades, I would’ve argued with him if he wasn’t so right.
So I cleared my throat instead and whispered; "Dahlia..."
A small noise outside the room caught our attention, causing Dahlia’s eyes to trail behind me to Drogon standing by the door.
She muttered; "Do you know that your child and her mother are hospitalized as we speak? They were also served poisoned food, just as I was."
For a moment, I watched her lips move without grasping the words she was saying, and when her words finally seemed to dawn on me, I froze.
"No."
"Leila was poisoned, and so was Nyx. They’re here. You should check on them."
Usually, that news was never meant to affect me so much— okay, Nyx’s not her daughters— but it slammed into me with so much force, I trembled.
My eyes searched her face for a trace of anything that would give me an indication that she was lying, but there was nothing.
My breath hitched. My limbs worked on their own accord and before you know it, I was turning on my heels, sprinting out of the room. To my child. To her mother.
Fucking Drogon, that’s why he’s here!
