The Aloof Lord's Mysterious Wife-Chapter 1034: She Just Wants to Drive the Old Man Mad
On the field, Chi Xun’s sword intent was fierce, breaking through Bai Xiuyou’s defense and thrusting straight at her chest.
She couldn’t block it.
Bai Xiuyou stared at the wooden sword before her chest, stunned for a moment, suspicion flashing in her eyes.
She had lost.
But she also recognized the subtle brilliance in Chi Xun’s move. Slowly, she said:
"This is the Chi clan’s sword technique... You--who exactly are you?"
Chi Xun, fighting to win, had gone so far as to use the Chi family’s sword arts.
He hadn’t expected Bai Xiuyou to recognize it so quickly.
Not only she, but even the other Bai family members looked on in shock.
Chi Xun’s face paled slightly. After a deep breath, he declared firmly:
"I am of the Chi clan. I wield the Chi clan’s sword--what of it?
My name is Chi!"
The Chi family still carried weight, but with the barrier between the Mortal Realm and the Cultivation Realm, even if they knew he lived, they couldn’t touch him.
He had cowered long enough.
He refused to be looked down upon any longer.
If he couldn’t return to the Chi clan, then he would build one of his own!
His proclamation left the Bai family whispering and exchanging glances.
Bai Xiuyou furrowed her brows, then suddenly smiled.
"Chi Xun... Chi Xun, I remember now. So it’s you."
They had grown up in Jiuzhou City together--both of the Four Great Families. Naturally, they’d crossed paths as children.
Later, when she heard that Chi Xun’s branch had been wiped out, she’d even mourned for days.
Chi Xun hadn’t thought she’d still remember him. His heart swelled with emotion.
"You... you remember me."
Bai Xiuyou sheathed her wooden sword and nodded.
"You were gifted even as a child. Of course I remembered. If you’d stayed in the Chi clan, I might not have been able to surpass you."
She had always spoken truthfully, with no shame in admitting such things.
Chi Xun lowered his head, his gaze dim. "But there are no ’ifs’."
Bai Xiuyou encouraged him:
"Don’t say that. Your talent is still there. What you lack is guidance and proper methods. If you strive to catch up, your future achievements won’t be small. If you don’t understand something, you can ask me anytime. I’ll gladly spar with you."
Chi Xun brightened with a smile.
"Really--"
Before he could finish, Bai Peng suddenly appeared before them.
"Of course not!"
His eyes blazed with vigilance as he glared at Chi Xun.
Who did this fellow think he was, daring to approach his most accomplished daughter!
Bai Xiuyou glared at her father.
"Father, how can you say that? Haven’t you always worried about my marriage? He’s not bad."
Chi Xun froze.
Bai Peng clutched his chest, nearly unable to breathe.
"You... foolish girl! He was cast out by the Chi clan, forced to change his surname just to survive. How is he worthy of you?"
"So what? Second Sister and Fourth Sister’s husbands were both live-in sons-in-law. I can take one too! With our Bai family behind us, what can the Chi clan do? Wipe us out?" Bai Xiuyou retorted.
Bai Peng groaned, his head aching.
"Your sisters’ husbands may lack cultivation, but they at least have good character!"
He turned to Chi Xun, striking him down mercilessly.
"This boy--no good!"
Chi Xun, who had just felt a glimmer of hope, was plunged into despair again.
Holding a grudge against Bai Peng for once forcing her toward Chu Yang, Bai Xiuyou shot back mockingly:
"My husband, my choice. Unless you’re the one sleeping with him, what does it matter if I like him?"
Bai Peng staggered, nearly choking.
"Heavens above! How did I sire such a rebellious daughter!"
The Bai household erupted in chaos.
While arguments raged, Siheng and Nan Li returned.
They arrived just in time to hear the Bai family split into factions, debating fiercely whether Chi Xun should become the fifth son-in-law.
Bai Xiangyu, the second, and the fourth all disagreed, nearly coming to blows.
Ye Yanqing, having just been reunited with her family, felt she had no right to speak. She trembled silently on the side.
But Bai Xiangyu turned to her at once.
"Third Sister, what do you think? Do you agree or not?"
Bai Xiuwan chimed in:
"Third Sister, speak your mind. Don’t be afraid."
Bai Xiushu added:
"Yes. Our eldest brother only wants Fifth Sister married off so she won’t threaten his claim to the family headship. You must speak up for her!"
Ye Yanqing felt dizzy, her head heavy.
Spotting Nan Li beyond the circle, she felt as if she’d seen salvation.
"Second Master! You’ve come back!"
Nan Li, who had been mildly amused watching the squabble, raised a hand quickly.
"Don’t mind me--carry on."
But with the "venerable couple" standing there, no one dared continue bickering.
Bai Peng coughed awkwardly.
"Haha, there’s no rush. We’ll discuss it later. My third daughter has just returned home--there will be three days of feasting, her name entered into the family register, proclaimed to all. I must ask Immortal Jifeng and Cultivator Nan Li to grace us."
"Second Master, I’ve already discussed it with Father... I’ll change my surname but not my given name," Ye Yanqing reported softly.
For her name had been given by her grandmaster.
Nan Li smiled.
"Then let me congratulate you first. But Siheng and I have urgent matters--we won’t be joining the banquet."
She produced a thick tome.
"This is my personal compendium of talismans. Take it as my gift. May your family be ever harmonious, united, and whole."
"Second Master..." Ye Yanqing’s eyes reddened, her nose stung.
Bai Peng stepped forward eagerly to receive it on her behalf.
"Many thanks, Cultivator Nan Li! Were it not for you, father and daughter would never have been reunited." 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
The younger uncle had long schemed to connect with Nan Li, never expecting that his third niece had already apprenticed under her. What fortune!
This talisman compendium was surely Nan Li’s life’s work.
The girl’s fortunes had soared!
And the Bai family’s rise was assured!
Ye Yanqing shot her father a glare.
"Father, this is mine."
"Yes, yes, I was only holding it for you," Bai Peng said quickly, though he stared at the compendium again and again before reluctantly handing it over.
The others congratulated Ye Yanqing warmly.
Then Bai Xiuyou, ever one to stir the pot, chirped:
"Father, let’s make it double happiness then--find me a husband too!"
"Silence!" Bai Peng barked.
"Your Dao partner will never be that Chi Xun!"
Bai Xiuyou folded her arms with a smirk.
"Hehe, the more you forbid me, the more determined I am."
She just wanted to drive the old man mad.
"Pardon me," Nan Li interjected.
"Today won’t do. I need to take Chi Xun to Jialan Immortal Mountain."
Chi Xun’s head shot up.
Could it be--could it be that Nan Li, too, saw promise in him and wished to take him as a disciple?
Bai Peng’s mind raced. He quickly probed:
"Cultivator Nan Li, you also think this boy is promising? Hah, his bones are solid enough, but his scheming..."
He still disliked Chi Xun.
And he wanted Nan Li to know the boy was not to be trusted.
