The 70s Novel: The Supporting Character Just Wants to Lie Down-Chapter 75: Getting What You Need for a Better Life
Days passed neither quickly nor slowly. That day, Wang Miaomiao drew by candlelight until midnight, and the next morning, she didn’t see Li Jiajia.
She didn’t go out that day, staying in the dormitory drawing comics. After finishing two books in a row, she stretched and stopped.
Wang Miaomiao is the kind of person who likes to finish tasks ahead of time. Only after completing everything does she enjoy her leisure time in a carefree, relaxed manner.
Checking her watch, it was already four in the afternoon. Wang Miaomiao thought for a while, picked up the lunchbox her second uncle used to bring dumplings yesterday, and took a book with her to the state-owned restaurant.
She ordered potato slices with meat and egg soup and ate them with a bowl of rice, feeling quite full. She also took a portion of braised pork with her in the lunchbox.
Carrying the lunchbox, she returned to Provincial High School around five but didn’t go back to the dormitory. Instead, she sat under the big tree at the entrance and started reading her book.
"Sis, did you know I was coming and waited here for me?" Wang Jia Bao spotted Wang Miaomiao sitting under the tree as soon as he entered the school gate; she was too noticeable.
Wang Miaomiao put down the book and checked her watch. It was five-twenty. "Yes. How was the trip? Was it tiring?"
Wang Jia Bao smiled and said, "What’s tiring about it? I sat on the bus, swaying along the way, and even took a nap."
Wang Miaomiao nodded. The young man was full of energy and looked quite good.
"Sis, do you need help packing your stuff?" Wang Jia Bao took off the large bundle from his back, opened it, and started unpacking while chattering, "There’s also the egg cake mom sent. We each get one. And your letter. Right, mom said you should have your mail sent directly to your school from now on to avoid delays. Sis, I checked; there are two art books in there, sis..."
The way Wang Jia Bao called his sister was full of affection and charm, and given his good looks, it wasn’t out of place at all. Like a cute little pup, he was quite adorable.
Wang Miaomiao took the envelope, which contained a letter and two identical art books. "This one was meant for you. They’ll send an extra copy in the future." Wang Miaomiao handed one book to Wang Jia Bao, which she had deliberately requested after noticing he liked them.
"Really? Thank you, sis." Wang Jia Bao jumped with joy and excitement.
"Alright, you should head back soon." Wang Miaomiao handed him the lunchbox, saying, "It’s our second uncle’s lunchbox. He brought dumplings on Saturday. I bought some braised pork; you can find Jian Min and share it."
Upon hearing about the braised pork, Wang Jia Bao couldn’t wait any longer. "Sis, I’m off then."
Wang Miaomiao watched her brother’s joyful departing figure with a slight smile. Ah... still a child at heart. Who knows when he’ll grow into a man?
Carrying her things, she returned to the dorm. Some others had already returned, and two mosquito nets had been hung up.
After greeting them, Wang Miaomiao joined in the task of hanging up the mosquito nets.
After working up a sweat, she finally finished. Sitting in her bed, she found it quite a private little space. If only she could have a small table; writing or drawing would be convenient.
An idea sprung to her mind, and as she lifted the bed curtain, she saw Li Jiajia coming back with her stuff, "Jia Jia, I need to ask you something."
"What is it?" Li Jiajia put her things down and looked at her.
"Do you know where I can buy a small table? One that can be used on the bed, a little low table." Wang Miaomiao’s eyes sparkled with expectancy.
Upon hearing this, Li Jiajia understood what she wanted. "Come down, I’ll take you to one."
Wang Miaomiao immediately jumped out of bed, put on her shoes swiftly.
The two left the dormitory one after the other, leaving the rest of room 202 exchanging perplexed glances.
"When did those two become so close?"
"I don’t know... But a small table that can be used on the bed, I want one too."
"Should we ask them when they return?"
"Would Li Jiajia even tell us? Why not ask Wang Miaomiao? She seems easier to talk to..."
...
Wang Miaomiao and Li Jiajia had no idea the dormitory conversations were already centered around them.
Initially, as they walked, both were rather quiet. Since Wang Miaomiao needed help, she naturally had to be proactive.
So, she started chatting. Fortunately, Li Jiajia was also quite talkative. Once Wang Miaomiao brought up a topic, Li Jiajia could talk at length about it.
They passed through several alleys and arrived at a bungalow. The gate was open, and inside, two people were working. "This is the local goods store. We have a large family, and our beds are made here. I’ve been here twice with my mom."
"Is Master Zhang here?" Li Jiajia asked the workers.
"He’s inside. You can go in."
Wang Miaomiao followed Li Jiajia in as if she was familiar with the place.
"Master Zhang, we’d like to have a small table made." Li Jiajia said as she greeted him with familiarity.
"Oh, who are you?" Master Zhang looked at the young girl, she seemed familiar, but he couldn’t quite place her as there were too many people coming and going here.
"I’m Li Guoqiang from the Educated Youth Office’s little girl."
"Oh, I remember now. You’ve been here with your mom." Just a slight hint was enough for Master Zhang, who was experienced, to remember, "What do you need made? I’ll give you a discount."
"A small low table, one that can be used on the bed. 70cm long, 40cm wide, and 35cm high." It was something they had just discussed and Li Jiajia recounted fluently.
"Alright, come pick it up this time tomorrow." Master Zhang agreed readily.
"Thank you, Master." Wang Miaomiao was delighted to hear this, "How much is the table? We’ll pay you today."
Wang Miaomiao wanted to avoid any unforeseen issues and thought there’d be no need for Li Jiajia to make another trip tomorrow; she could pick it up herself.
Wang Miaomiao paid and took the receipt, happily thanking Master Zhang.
The two returned to the dorm, quickly washed up in the water room, and got back to bed as it was nearly seven, just in time before the lights went out. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
Lying on the bed, Wang Miaomiao was considering that she needed to get a flashlight. At seven, lights were cut off and the hallways outside were pitch dark. Getting up at night to use the bathroom required lighting a candle, which was too troublesome and unsafe.
The school was just too frugal, cutting off the lights at 7 PM, really too early.
Another morning, as the sky just turned light, there was movement in the dormitory. The lights went off too early last night and they were unwilling to burn candles, so the diligent students chose to get up early.
The early bird catches the worm, and the campus quickly became lively in the morning.
Wang Miaomiao didn’t stay in bed either. She got up with everyone to wash, eat breakfast, and then head to the classroom for morning reading.
Wang Miaomiao thought Cheng Xue would transfer over soon, but after waiting for three days, there was no sign of her. She felt a bit disappointed. Could it be that the adults couldn’t handle things, and she couldn’t come?
Wang Miaomiao’s guess was correct; Cheng Xue’s transfer indeed involved some paperwork. Population was strictly controlled at the time. Cheng Xue needed a guardian here, and Jiang Yan was just her uncle, not her parents, so transferring guardianship took several days. Getting it done was already quite a feat.
