The 70s Novel: The Supporting Character Just Wants to Lie Down-Chapter 155: First Meeting with the Jiang Family
Wang Miaomiao sat on the sofa in a daze, pulled inside by Jiang Yan, her head still buzzing and unable to process.
Before long, a door on the first floor opened, and a meticulous man dressed in a perfectly straight military uniform stepped out.
Jiang Zhongyi had only just glimpsed a petite figure behind his youngest son, and upon closer inspection, realized it was actually a pretty young girl.
Instantly, his sharp gaze softened with satisfaction, looking at his busy son, he asked, "Brat, who is this?"
Wang Miaomiao stood up nervously, staring blankly at Jiang Zhongyi, unsure what to call him.
Jiang Yan handed her the tea, noticing her confusion, and immediately introduced, "This is my dad, you can call him Uncle."
"Uncle..." Wang Miaomiao said awkwardly, and then called again, "Hello, Uncle Jiang."
"Hey... hello..." Jiang Zhongyi had never seen his son being so attentive to any girl before, his eyes full of curiosity.
"This is Yang Zhigang’s sister-in-law, Wang Miaomiao. She came with me to join Xiao Xue in the military," Jiang Yan said, and Jiang Zhongyi suddenly understood...
"Miao Miao, thank you for taking care of Xiao Xue all this time," Jiang Zhongyi said, recalling past events. He knew this girl had a very good relationship with his granddaughter, always keeping in touch through letters. Yet, he hadn’t realized his son was... haha...
This little girl seems about the same age as Xiao Xue...
Jiang Zhongyi gave Jiang Yan a meaningful glance.
"You’re welcome. Xiao Xue is my good friend. We take care of each other," Wang Miaomiao said while sipping water, feeling more adjusted now. After all, she’s someone with experience, initially surprised but now handling it calmly.
"Dad, it’s getting late. I’ll take her upstairs to rest, and we’ll come down in a bit," Jiang Yan picked up Wang Miaomiao’s luggage, signaling her to follow.
Wang Miaomiao put down the teacup and bowed slightly to Jiang Zhongyi, "Uncle Jiang, I’ll head upstairs first."
"Go ahead, rest well. Make yourself at home," Jiang Zhongyi waved his hand, very satisfied watching the two leave one behind the other.
Jiang Yan took her upstairs, showing her the bathroom and guest room, and opened the door for her, "Freshen up and take a good rest. We can discuss any issues tomorrow."
Wang Miaomiao sighed deeply, nodding, "Alright, Brother Jiang, good night."
Adapt to the situation since you’re here, and she’s tired; she decided any troubles can wait until tomorrow.
Having settled her in, Jiang Yan went downstairs, where Jiang Zhongyi was waiting for him on the sofa. After chatting for a while, both retired to their rooms.
The next morning, Wang Miaomiao was drowsily awakened by voices praising from the courtyard outside the window.
Being in someone else’s house, her sleep was lighter.
July days bring an early sunrise. The soft morning light filtered through the window, warming the room.
Wang Miaomiao opened her eyes, listened quietly to the sounds outside, and got out of bed, barefoot, moving slightly towards the window. Leaning on the curtain, she looked outside at the little garden below.
At that moment, she saw Jiang Yan wearing a military vest and shorts, practicing military boxing in the yard. An elderly man was watching him, offering praises.
Wang Miaomiao guessed it might be Jiang Yan’s grandfather.
Suddenly, Jiang Yan glanced up at the second-floor window, noticing the curtain slightly swaying before it settled back into stillness. With a smile, he finished his workout.
"Hey... why stop? It’s still early..." Grandpa Jiang wondered, looking at his grandson.
Jiang Yan grabbed a towel nearby, wiping the sweat from his body, "No, there’s something today. Grandpa, let’s head inside first."
He figured that soon the girl would come down, and he’d have to introduce her to the family...
Grandpa Jiang didn’t think much, assuming his grandson had actual plans, and followed him inside.
Jiang Yan went into the house, took a quick shower, changed into his military uniform, and sat in the living room reading the newspaper while waiting for her to come down.
Before long, he heard sounds from the staircase.
Zheng Zhen looked at the girl in front of her, surprised, "Who are you? Why are you in my house?"
"Hello, Aunt. I am Wang Miaomiao," Wang Miaomiao immediately deduced she was Jiang Yan’s mother by her age and demeanor.
"Wang Miaomiao? Who? Why are you in my house, and who brought you here?" Zheng Zhen frowned, eyeing her warily.
"Mom, she’s my guest," Jiang Yan heard the commotion and came over, standing at the staircase and addressing Wang Miaomiao, "Miao Miao, come down for breakfast."
Upon hearing that Jiang Yan had brought her, Zheng Zhen’s brows furrowed even tighter, her gaze turning critical and scrutinizing.
"Oh..." Wang Miaomiao didn’t like her glances but maintained a smile, enduring the discomfort, "Aunt, shall we go down first?"
"Hmph..." Zheng Zhen wasn’t one to be polite, gave her a sideways glance and turned to leave.
With her back straight and a commanding walk, she seemed like a classy beauty from behind. But face to face, her pride appeared snobbish, unlikable and haughty.
Wang Miaomiao’s eyes flickered, choosing to remain silent, and followed her downstairs.
Aunt Li was setting up breakfast, and Grandma Jiang was already seated. Upon seeing Wang Miaomiao come down, a bright glint flashed in her slightly cloudy eyes, "Xiao Li, add a spot next to me, bring another set of utensils."
"Young lady, come sit by Grandma," Grandma Jiang waved her over, kindly and warmly.
Wang Miaomiao was taken aback, glancing at Jiang Yan.
Jiang Yan smiled, guiding her over and introducing everyone, "Grandma, Grandpa, this is Wang Miaomiao. She’s the girl Xiao Xue always talks about. She’s here to join Xiao Xue in the military."
"Grandpa, Grandma." Wang Miaomiao smiled sweetly, naturally returning a genuine smile to such amiable elders.
"Ah, what a good child," Grandma Jiang held her hand without letting go, examining her closely.
Her vision was indeed not as sharp as it once was due to age.
After observing for a while, she praised, "Hmm, truly beautiful." Grandma Jiang had heard the most about Wang Miaomiao, and now finally seeing her in person.
"Huh..." An unexpected scoff burst out, silencing the scene momentarily.
Zheng Zhen noticed everyone’s eyes on her, feeling a slight tightness inside. For over a year now, she had been relatively passive at home, treated indifferently by others.
Though not divorced, she and Jiang Zhongyi were sleeping apart, her presence in the household scarcely acknowledged.
"What? Why is everyone staring at me..." Zheng Zhen sat at her spot, feigning innocence as if nothing had happened.
Grandma Jiang sighed gently and chose to ignore her, tugging at Wang Miaomiao’s hand, "Miao Miao, have a seat."
