Chapter 233: Chapter 232: Call the Police? There’s a Soldier in the Family

Xue Yue had taken a few days off from school. When He Lang went to pick up the two children, he was surprised to find Qin Haize coming back with Ruanruan. Naturally, his grandfather’s guard followed behind them.

"Auntie, I heard from He Ziluo that you’re sick, so I came to see you. This is a gift I brought for you."

The guard behind him placed a basket of fruit on the table, then stood to the side without speaking.

Xue Yue was a little baffled. She glanced at He Lang, who just shrugged, as if to say the boy had insisted on coming himself.

’Are all kids these days so thoughtful? He even knew to bring something when visiting the sick.’

Ruanruan asked Xue Yue, "Mom, can I take Qin Haize to see our room? He said he wants to see my toys."

Xue Yue nodded. "Of course."

She watched Qin Haize and Ruanruan leave the room, with the guard following right behind.

"What’s going on?" Xue Yue asked.

He Lang said, "Ruanruan probably told him you were sick. When I went to pick her up, he asked me if he could come see you. I couldn’t really say no, so I let him tag along. Besides, he has someone with him, so it’s not like anything could happen. The fruit was bought on the way here by that guard. But, do you know this kid?"

He Lang had been away in Shanghai, so this was the first he was hearing of it. Xue Yue told him about the fight between Ruanruan and Qin Haize.

He Lang raised an eyebrow. "That happened?"

Xue Yue nodded. "That kid might have misbehaved a bit before, but he’s changed. I heard from your daughter that they’re good friends now. Besides, that child is so good-looking, it’s hard to dislike him."

He Lang chuckled. "So looks are everything."

It wasn’t just He Lang who was curious. Mrs. He had also just learned that the child who came to their house today was the same one who had bullied Ruanruan and gotten beaten up by her.

She studied him closely, thinking he didn’t look like a bad kid at all. And he had a guard who followed him everywhere, never saying a word, just sticking close. It was all very strange.

Seeing the guard’s uniform, Mrs. He didn’t dare get too close, only sizing him up secretly.

Just then, someone started pounding forcefully on the main gate from outside. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

"Anyone home? If you’re breathing, get out here and open the door."

The voice of an old woman came from outside the gate.

Inside the house, Xue Yue and He Lang exchanged a look, likely guessing who it was.

He Lang started to head outside.

"Wait for me, I’m going too."

Xue Yue also sat up in bed and slowly got to her feet. She wanted to see for herself what was going on with that family.

Mrs. He went to open the gate and saw an old woman with her hands on her hips, glaring at her with a hostile expression.

Mrs. He looked her up and down.

"Who are you looking for?"

Niu Hongjun’s mother stared at Mrs. He. "I’m Niu Hongjun’s mother. My son is still in the hospital, his life is in danger! I’m telling you, this isn’t over. My son is seriously injured. We’ve already had a disability assessment done, and I’m going to call the police! What kind of people beat someone like that? You nearly killed him! And the doctor said my son’s hand will never be able to do heavy work again. You’re responsible for this, too. You have to support him for the rest of his life!"

Mrs. He finally understood. So this was the mother of the man who had attacked Xue Yue.

She hadn’t even gone to settle the score with them yet, and here they were, showing up at her door.

"Oh, so it’s *your* son. I was wondering what kind of family could raise someone like him. He harasses my daughter-in-law, and he hits women. How spineless. Now that I’ve seen you, I get it. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. With parents like you, what kind of good person could you possibly raise? Your son started the fight! My daughter-in-law just got back from the hospital, the gash on her head hasn’t even healed, and you still have the nerve to come to our door? We haven’t even come looking for you yet!"

Niu Hongjun’s mother was taken aback. "You’re not done yet? Your son beat my son to a pulp, what more could you want?"

Mrs. He retorted, "What do you think? Then why did you come here? Since both our families got into a fight, does that mean whoever chickens out first is in the right? You’re the one who came looking for trouble. So what is it you want? Another beating?"

Niu Hongjun’s mother’s eyes flashed with anger. "We’re calling the police! This is intentional assault!"

Mrs. He pointed outside. "Then go ahead! I’d like to see if there’s any justice left in the Imperial City! Your son harassed my daughter-in-law in broad daylight, then beat her up when he didn’t get his way, and even put her in the hospital! We’re thinking of calling the police, too! Your son is a university student, isn’t he? I should go to his school and ask them if bullying a decent woman counts as hooliganism. Would the school dare to keep a student like that?"

Niu Hongjun’s mother’s heart clenched. "Your daughter-in-law is no prize herself! I refuse to believe my son would have bothered her if she hadn’t seduced him first! Does she think she’s some kind of goddess?"

Mrs. He raged, "What a load of crap! You two really are mother and son, both full of it! How dare you even say that? My daughter-in-law keeps to herself and is perfectly respectable. Compared to your shifty-eyed son, she’s practically a goddess!"

SPLASH!

In a sudden move, two ladles of cold water were splashed all over Niu Hongjun’s mother at the same time.

"Don’t you dare talk about my mom like that! She’s not the kind of person you’re saying she is!" Ruanruan, still holding a water ladle, glared furiously at the woman.

Qin Haize held a water ladle as well. "That’s right! Auntie isn’t like what you said at all!"

Clearly, it was the two children who had thrown the water.

Niu Hongjun’s mother looked down at her new clothes. She had just changed before coming over, and it was her favorite outfit—one she usually couldn’t even bear to wear. Now, she was soaked to the bone.

She was furious. In a fit of rage, she was about to reach out and teach the two children a lesson when she saw a man in uniform step in front of them, his sharp eyes fixed on her.

She had no doubt that if she dared to lay a hand on them, he would toss her aside in an instant.

The woman froze instantly. ’What is this? This family has a soldier.’

Her innate fear and awe of soldiers kicked in. Forgetting everything else, she immediately turned on her heel and fled.

When He Lang and Xue Yue came out, they saw the two children with the water ladles. He Lang had wanted to step in and help, but then he saw the guard behind them and thought, ’His skills are definitely better than mine.’

Niu Hongjun’s mother rushed back home, shut the door, and only then bent over, gasping for breath.

Niu Hongjun’s father was lying in bed. Earlier, when his wife said she was going next door to demand an explanation, he had wanted to see what that family’s attitude would be, so he let her go.

Seeing her return in such a disheveled state, he sat up instantly, a sense of unease washing over him.

"What? They dared to hit you?"

Niu Hongjun’s mother sat down on a stool.

"No, they have a soldier in their family. And from the looks of his uniform, he’s a high-ranking officer. That old woman from the family is fierce, too. She said she’s going to Hongjun’s school to report him for hooliganism and get him kicked out."

Hearing this, Niu Hongjun’s father’s brow furrowed tightly.
