Talentless Extra Of The Legendary Hero Academy-Chapter 28: Gamble
Chapter 28 - Gamble
"Waa... what!" Siri shouted. Gone was her calm, confident expression; now it had turned panicked and afraid.
She took a step back. She gave a strained smile, her eyes flickering towards the box on the ground. "Wait, we can really talk about this. I'm serious when I said I don't want you to die."
In this future, it was hard to believe that Siri might turn into someone who destroyed millions of lives—and she did it intentionally.
"My apologies, but you are already dead, Siri. You were too close to that blast. Some of the poison must have seeped into your system. You'll have twenty minutes at most."
She froze, and her body stiffened. Her eyes turned wild, and she stared at the door. "They... they will know how to save me!"
Her hand struggled for something on her waist, and she angled herself forward, but Severin didn't let her do whatever she wanted to do.
He whipped his hand up, and a faint blue thread that extended into the hallway appeared. Like a lash, he moved the thread, and with a sound like whooshing wind, a glinting dagger lodged into her throat.
She gasped and flinched, her hand going to her throat, but it was a useless gesture because she fell the next instant, blood pooling beneath her.
Severin stood above her, and then he crouched. Turning her body over, he used one hand to search her with quick efficiency until he brought out what he wanted.
The artifact was a black blank card. It had nothing special to it, and for the most part, it was useless in itself. But it was also very special—it was the only existing invitation for the participation of owning the Pandora Box. Nobody knew what the artifact was for, not even Siri, until she claimed the Pandora Box.
Severin knew what it was, and he put it in his pocket. He straightened and then went to pick up the box while he waited for the others to be done.
He wasn't worried about them. They were strong enough to deal with the opponents he picked for them. If not for Scorpo showing up, Ethan alone would have been enough.
He studied the black box that held the key. Every surface of it was smooth and made of the same black material, but Severin wasn't fooled by its fragile appearance.
And for an instant, the idea of keeping the key for himself came to his mind. But just as fast, it disappeared. There were simply too many problems with keeping the key, and at the top of it all was the fact that it would make survival very difficult for him—and Severin was all about survival.
"Is that the key? It doesn't look like anything special," Derrick said. He was breathing hard, and he had a small cut on his neck and a bloodied fist.
"The key is inside the box. But first, bring me the body of Eric."
"What do you want with it? There's not much to look at."
Severin didn't say anything more. He just waited until Derrick grumbled and went to drag the body towards him. Indeed, the one who would have become one of the Five Sword Saints in the future didn't have much to look at.
His face had been crushed nearly into a paste, and part of his body was crushed. Right then, Eric's rank ability was only at the E rank. It was actually impressive that he managed to wound Derrick. Indeed, he was a genius of the sword.
Severin crouched and searched his body as well, until he brought out what he was looking for. The artifact this time was in the shape of a bottle. The artifact itself was inside the small bottle.
He breathed a sigh of relief when he added it to the other one in his pocket. '.....I have now achieved two of the three main goals of tonight... but I wonder what the future will be like? By doing this... I have changed the future in ways that are totally unpredictable, but I have no choice....'
'.....besides, what does it matter that much? I know the future will be terrible... the only thing I can do is make myself strong enough to withstand it...'
A slow, shuffling set of footsteps made him look up. Ethan was done as well, and he was grinning. After his defeat from Severin at the monthly assessment, he'd been bullying people less and less. But now he had the opportunity to vent his anger.
His chest was bloody and dripping, claw marks decorating it. His left hand was hanging limply, but he was smiling, dragging his hammer behind him. "Severin, I didn't know you had something like this prepared for me. I don't care how you got your information, but I'm sure glad I'm here."
Before anything else could be said, they felt something like pricking nails sweep over them. Their bodies reacted, and they all turned toward the door, shuddering.
Something was coming.
Something powerful.
A small purple dot appeared on the door, and in the next instant, it spread into a portal. "Siri, why are you guys late? I had to deal with all those guys while..."
The voice stopped, and a face appeared on the portal—a grown woman with a childlike face. "You are not Siri."
Severin's gut tightened in sheer panic. Another variable. A very dangerous one, at a level he couldn't even think of fighting—someone far above his Advancement Stage.
The woman's gaze shifted, and her eyes flickered to the box in Severin's hand. "But you have the key. Good. I will be taking that."
Time seemed to slow down as they both reacted.
Her gaze sharpened, and her hand reached out in a gentle wave, but to Severin, it was as if she swung an axe. His brain seemed to explode as thousands of thoughts flashed through his mind.
His eyes constricted, and all his five senses heightened to the highest level.
With all the strength and power in his body, he raised his hand at a speed he didn't know was possible and put the box, like a shield, in front of his neck. freēnovelkiss.com
