Chapter 7: Chapter 7 Wave After Wave

Even by dragon standards, the Red Dragon was extraordinarily prideful. Salovis had initially been cowed, her usually high and mighty tail now drooping powerlessly on the ground, but it quickly stiffened up again. Nature took over, and with a huff through her nostrils, she said, "You're actually not dead?"

Leon had thought some beast was disturbing him and ran to the cave entrance with his sword, only to see a baby dragon. He was indeed quite surprised.

At the same time, the baby dragon gave him a familiar feeling, and it was easy to guess that she was one of his siblings, hatched from the same clutch. Looking at her, clearly more delicate than his own bulky body – although with the oversized head that seems uncoordinated just like all baby dragons – the other features were graceful, evidently his sister.

Why had Mother Dragon not come, but instead Dragon Sister had run over here?

The real question was, she was clearly talking to him – there were rhythms, pauses, ups and downs in her speech, it had to be language, not mere roaring - regardless of whether there was such a thing as Dragon Inheritance, he just couldn't understand what she was saying, could he?

She had previously appeared quite aggressive, even adopting an attack stance, but now her aggression seemed to have subsided... What on earth had happened?

It seemed unlikely that she had come just to greet her older brother. Could she have come in place of Mother Dragon to call him home, suggesting he should go back with her? As for food, he could handle it himself. What other help could Mother Dragon offer? Teach spells?

Leon was lost in his thoughts when he noticed Salovis, the baby dragon standing opposite to him, getting angry again due to his lack of response. Being a Red Dragon, her temper flared, and she roared, "Are you ignoring me?"

Leon finally realized that without any sign from him, Dragon Sister would definitely think he was looking down on her, and in a fit of anger, might pounce on him. So, he raised his empty hand, pointed a claw at his ear, and then shook his head.

If the gesture was of no use, he was out of options.

Salovis seemed to understand, and her previously fiery voice softened a bit, "Are you deaf?"

She seemed not to fully grasp the situation.

The intelligence of the White Dragon was rather low, quite a shame among the Five-Colored Dragons, but the intelligence of the Red Dragon was not low. Salovis quickly understood, saying, "You can't understand what I am saying?"

Dragon Sister couldn't understand why there would be a True Dragon who couldn't hear Dragon Language. She, after all, had never specifically studied Dragon Language, but she instinctively understood the Dragon Language spoken by Mother Dragon and could speak it when she wanted to express something.

"Freak, you really are a freak." Salovis felt like she had reclaimed some pride, "Idiot, no wonder you ran outside right after hatching and then fell from the Dragon Nest."

"Why did Mother give birth to such an idiot like you? Why do I have a brother like you?" Salovis flapped her wings, "Your existence only brings shame to Mother, brings shame to me."

"Better let me kill you." Dragon Sister's eyes became fierce, she said fiercely, though her face bore no intent to kill, merely raising her claw.

Leon couldn't understand what Dragon Sister was saying, but he felt that she had no malice, nor did she take any action.

Dragon Sister lowered her claw, looked at Leon's larger body, and nodded, "You stay here eating fish, crabs, and snails. When I grow bigger than you, I'll come back to kill you. Don't you die before I come find you."

Dragon Sister spread her wings, stirring up a breeze as she took flight. The flapping of her wings was frequent as she flew towards the distant mountains, towards the location of the Dragon Nest.

Bewildered, Leon simply couldn't comprehend why Dragon Sister had come, nor why she had left; he only knew he envied that Dragon Sister could fly. He tried flapping his wings but couldn't take off and turned back into his cave, sulking and went to sleep.

As usual, Leon slept until hunger woke him. After a sleep, the frustration of envying Dragon Sister's ability to fly somewhat dissipated. He stretched his neck and crawled out of the cave, thinking that he might prepare some food in advance next time, to save himself from having to search for food every time he woke up hungry.

Since he had almost exhausted the supply of big fish nearby, he had to venture farther out this time.

Eat then sleep, sleep then eat; he could now sleep whenever he wanted, and insomnia was a foreign concept to him. In this way, a day really did seem to fly by.

Waking up again, it was already midday. After a hearty meal, Leon prepared to resume his activities after a long absence, but since it was rare for him to wake up at noon, and the sunlight was just right, it was the perfect time to bask in the sun.

Dragon ears are generally as sensitive as human ears, and dragons can hear a range of pitches similar to humans. However, because they have the ability to identify what important sounds are, automatically filter out background noise, and focus on sounds that are worth noting, even the youngest dragon has more acute hearing than the typical human.

The hot weather was completely still, without even the rustling of leaves from the wind or any significant sound of water—only the endless chirping of cicadas. Lazily lying by the river, Leon comfortably soaked up the sun, automatically filtering out those meaningless noises, until the sound of footsteps arose.

Opening his eyes, Leon saw a middle-aged man who looked slightly disheveled standing there.

The middle-aged man had a medium build, slightly lean, with pale skin, glasses, and a robe embroidered with intricate magic runes on its cuffs and hem.

Leon stood up vigilantly, growling lowly at the man as a warning not to come any closer. He glanced around the corners of his eyes, ready to flee at any sign of trouble.

Leon watched the man stop at a distance, raising his hands as if to show he meant no harm, then saying something—the words were of a similar sort to that spoken by the Dragon Sister, yet different.

Leon naturally did not understand.

The man crossed his arms, nodded gently, fumbled in his pocket, rubbed something he took out, muttered something and made a hand gesture, then a blue light shone and spread towards Leon, covering him in an instant.

Leon did not resist the force.

The man spoke again.

"I mean no harm."

"Lady Melt Throat sent me."

"You should understand what I am saying now."

"Now, say something, anything you like, in any form."

It was a very strange feeling. Even though the words were unheard of before, he understood the meaning of the speech. Leon swallowed in his throat.

Leon took a deep breath and roared three times, "Who are you?"

"I am the Chief Mage under your mother, Lady Melt Throat... You may call me Edwin."

"What did you do?" Leon asked. "What spell is that?"

"A very simple one... Comprehend Languages," Edwin explained on his own. "Language has magic, and so do words. Through a spell, you can understand the literal meaning of any spoken language you hear. This includes written language you see, but only if you touch the surface inscribed with the text."

Edwin made a writing gesture and said, "Of course, it must be handwritten, not soullessly mechanically printed."

Leon, of course, had heard about Comprehend Languages before.

Leon tugged at the corner of his mouth.

It seemed that the Mother Dragon had not given up on him. From now on, the world would be full of events.
