System: Master Your Life-Chapter 576 - 142: Chi Linyue and Ning Yuhuan Meet for the First Time (Part 1)
Not long after leaving the teahouse, Xu Lin, with nothing much to do, went to the city library.
The collection at the city library was very rich, far beyond what Xu Lin’s school had.
Here, Xu Lin could find many interesting books, or books from various fields.
On a whim, Xu Lin found a few books on logic.
Logic is unfamiliar to many people because in this country, unless you specifically study this field, you won’t learn it, and there are few related majors offered in universities.
Moreover, it is a relatively profound, complex, and even abstract subject, and it is challenging to learn.
Xu Lin picked up "Logical Thinking and Sophistry," "The Pyramid Principle," and "Introduction to Logic" to read.
With a natural gift for learning, Xu Lin understood what logic was after reading them once.
But then again, what’s the use of learning logic?
To argue with others?
Xu Lin wasn’t so idle.
Besides, to be blunt, many people in reality simply don’t talk logic at all, because they have no concept of logic, unlike Chinese and Mathematics which you start learning from the first grade, and everyone knows one plus one equals two.
And in most people’s minds, there’s no concept of logic.
So trying to argue logically with others is like talking to a wall or playing music for cattle.
Xu Lin isn’t so bored to the point of arguing with others.
He obviously finds reading useful.
The average brain and energy of an ordinary person determine that they won’t read many books in their lifetime, and even if they do, they won’t remember much.
But Xu Lin is different. He has a gifted aptitude for learning and an extraordinary memory. With these two abilities combined, not to mention a few books, even with the so-called "Complete Library in Four Branches of Literature," "Daozang," "Tipitaka," he could finish reading them in a short time.
The "Complete Library in Four Branches of Literature" contains between eight hundred million and one billion characters.
The "Daozang" is a Taoist scripture with two to three hundred million characters.
The "Tipitaka," which is a Buddhist scripture, also contains two to three hundred million characters.
They are truly vast like a sea of books.
They are fundamentally not books that a human could finish reading.
But as long as Xu Lin desires, he can finish them.
If a person were to read all kinds of books, and read a lot more than the normal person, and even if they were knowledgeable about them, what would happen?
Without a doubt, he would become an incredibly impressive person.
Of course, Xu Lin isn’t going to treat books as meals.
After reading a few logic books, he had an overall understanding of logic and felt that his thinking had cleared up a lot.
Though perhaps it was just an illusion.
Then, finding that it was still early, just a little past two in the afternoon, Xu Lin pulled two more books off the shelf.
One was the "Śūraṅgama Sūtra," untranslated, worth mentioning that it’s a Buddhist scripture, also known as the King of Buddhist scriptures.
However, few know that this scripture contains very meticulous logical thinking, and it is a Buddhist scripture full of great wisdom, crucial for studying logical and philosophical matters.
The second book Xu Lin took was the "Selected Works of Mao Zedong," a text filled with the wisdom of a great man, of the kind that emerges once in thousands of years.
The historical figures who left a lasting legacy cannot avoid their class and time limitations. For example, they could be landlords, aristocrats, or even if they were of humble origin, they eventually grew to represent the interests of the ruling class, so from a thought level, they naturally had their class restrictions.
It should be known that even Wang Yangming, one of the historically famous Saints, only represented the interests of the feudal landlord class. With his thinking, even so-called Saints couldn’t surpass the ideological limitations of their times. Throughout ancient history, even those concerned with national wellbeing never embraced a people’s historical perspective. They always stood from a higher world to lament the suffering of the people, followed by long-winded speeches. Those who’ve studied high school history know the exam answers always include that phrase, maintaining some ruler’s rule, which is the limitation of the times and class.
The "Selected Works of Mao Zedong" is a text filled with wisdom.
Xu Lin spent five hours reading through the "Selected Works of Mao Zedong" and the "Śūraṅgama Sūtra" carefully.
However, he couldn’t say he truly understood them. The intellectual heights of these two books are very high, akin to how most people feel hyped after hearing some motivational quotes, but it’s just temporary, and they revert to form after a sleep.
Wang Yangming said that knowledge and action are one; knowledge is theory, and action is practice. Xu Lin remains at the theoretical stage in reading, so there’s no talk of understanding. If it weren’t for his extraordinary memory, he’d forget like ordinary people after a while.
Xu Lin studied cognitive thinking, which is an entire systemic discipline. These things might be useful later, and although he approaches it with a utilitarian motive, Xu Lin sees nothing wrong with that.
The day passed just like that.
As he left the city library, the sun had already set, and the distant horizon was filled with a captivating red glow.
Looking out, as there were no tall buildings obstructing the view, Xu Lin could see the horizon clearly and unobstructed, thus the sunset’s red glow was entirely visible.
After reading books for most of the day, Xu Lin was now in a state of internal peace, with no distracting thoughts or restlessness, so at this moment he could fully appreciate the sunset’s glow, or rather, commune with nature.
On a whim, Xu Lin pulled out his phone to take a photo.
