Surviving the Apocalypse: All I Want Is to Find a Husband-Chapter 220: Gentle Giants
Chapter 220: Gentle Giants
Medeia hadn’t given a clear answer about whether she’d ban him from kissing her or not, but deep down, she knew it would be impossible to stay away from his lips.
"Just don’t ever think about eating bugs again," she said firmly.
"I won’t! I promise!" Lucian said quickly, almost like his life depended on it.
Medeia moved a little closer to the fur monsters, but still kept a safe distance from the wall. The creatures were still asleep, even after all the noise she’d made earlier. It was like they couldn’t hear a thing.
"How are we supposed to learn anything about them if all we see is them sleeping?" Medeia muttered, then picked up a small rock from the ground. "Let’s wake one of them up."
Lucian hadn’t even said a word yet, but Medeia had already tossed the pebble at one of the fur monsters. Not once, but three times in a row until the creature finally stirred and began to slowly open its eyes.
It lowered its head, then suddenly let out a loud, guttural roar that sounded like a gorilla. The sound wasn’t loud enough to burst eardrums, but it was more than enough to wake the others.
Medeia took a step back. "Oh ... I didn’t think this guy would wake up his friends." She let out an awkward chuckle. "Should we, uh ... run?"
If they decided to fight now, the fur monsters would likely be reduced to nothing but bones by Lucian and Medeia wouldn’t learn anything from killing them.
"I can freeze them in place," Lucian offered calmly.
"No," Medeia said, shaking her head. "If you do that, they won’t be able to move or let out their ability. It’d be just like watching them sleep again. Useless."
Lucian nodded. "Fair enough. So ... what’s the plan?"
Medeia thought about it for a second. "If they try to kill us ... we could just run. Maybe?"
Neither of them liked running from danger. They usually preferred to fight. But since Medeia wanted to watch how the monsters behaved, the best thing to do right now was to let the fur monsters attack first, so she could see what they were really capable of.
THUMP!
The ground shook beneath their feet as one of the fur monsters jumped down from its resting spot. Medeia looked up, surprised. The thing was massive—about three times her size, roughly 1,700 feet tall.
Hot steam puffed out from its mouth with every breath. Its face had no fur, so Medeia could clearly see its glowing red eyes in the shadowy environment.
"What do you think?" she whispered to Lucian. "What kind of power do you think it has?"
From the way it looked, the monster reminded her of a giant gorilla, except its fur was completely white.
"Something with muscles and brute strength, maybe?" Lucian said as he gently pulled Medeia behind him and drew out his rusty sword.
Oh. This was the first time Medeia had seen Lucian use his sword again. After becoming more confident in his powers, he had stopped relying on that rusted weapon and instead used his abilities.
Besides, Lucian usually acted as her support whenever Medeia fought and devoured people’s souls, so he didn’t really need to lift his sword.
"Do you think they’ll attack all at once?" Medeia asked.
Considering these monsters lived in packs, it made sense for them to attack together as well.
And right after she said that, more fur monsters leapt down from the rocky walls. Every time their heavy feet hit the ground, the ground trembled. Bugs scattered in every direction, forcing Medeia to step away from the walls so she wouldn’t get caught in the chaos.
"These monsters really don’t know how to calm down," Medeia said, peeking over Lucian’s shoulder. Then she added, "But ... why are they just staring at us?"
Unlike most monsters, which would usually start sharpening their claws or showing their sharp fangs, these fur monsters simply watched them from a distance and didn’t get any closer.
Some of them even seemed hesitant to approach, taking a few steps forward before backing away again.
"Are they ... timid, like the soldiers?" Medeia clicked her tongue. "Has everyone in this world suddenly turned into cowards and scaredy-cats?"
"No, I don’t think they’re scared of us," Lucian replied. "They don’t want to come closer, but they’re not running away either. It’s not fear... I think they’re curious about us."
Curious?
Could monsters that didn’t eat humans really be this harmless? Or was it just a trait specific to these furry ones?
Medeia made a mental note: if she ever ran into monsters with thick fur or a cute appearance, they probably wouldn’t be the type to attack right away or even want to kill.
But if they looked weird, disgusting, or downright creepy, then yeah, they were probably the kind of monsters born to be evil.
She glanced around at the rocky walls nearby. On some parts of the stone, she spotted dents and dips, clear signs that the monsters had been sleeping in those exact spots for a long time.
When she looked down, she spotted a long mark on the ground, like the wall had been dragged for miles.
Wait ... hadn’t Lucian changed the layout of the Red Canyon after they moved here? Could it be that these fur creatures had actually been living here long before they arrived?
"Don’t you think the bugs look kind of weird?" Lucian asked again, bringing the conversation back to those creepy things.
Medeia winced at the thought. She really didn’t want to look, but curiosity got the better of her. With a sigh, she leaned in to take a closer look at the disgusting little creatures.
Some of the bugs were even stuck inside the rocks, frozen in place like fossils.
It didn’t take long for Medeia to figure out what had happened. It seemed like these fur creatures had been trapped inside the canyon walls for years, and the only thing they could eat in there was the bugs—or whatever dead bugs they could find.
But how could such massive creatures end up stuck between canyon walls? Couldn’t they just break through the rocks with their strength?
[Hint: These creatures were being controlled by members of the Stormclad who had the ability to command mutant monsters.]
[They were sealed between the canyon walls because someone planned to use them as secret weapons.]
A short message from the system helped Medeia understand the situation. She quickly shared the information with Lucian, saying, "After you killed that person, I think they were finally freed from his control."
But ... if they were free to go, why were they still here, just wandering around the base instead of leaving?
Lucian frowned beside her. "Do you think ... they’re looking for orders?"
"They were controlled for so long," Medeia said quietly. "Maybe they don’t know what to do now that they’re free."
However, that thought was quickly debunked when one of the fur creatures slowly approached them, looking unsure.
It couldn’t speak like a human, but it seemed like it was trying to say one word over and over again.
"T-thank ... thank ..."
Thank you?
Were they trying to show their gratitude?
The creature stood a few feet away, its massive frame towering over them, yet its eyes looked ... soft. Hesitant. Like it wasn’t sure if it was allowed to speak, or even approach them.
Were they trying to say thank you because, thanks to Lucian, they were no longer under anyone’s control and were finally free from their prison?
[Ding! Ding!]
[Congratulations! You have completed a mission: Identify the type of mutated monsters lurking near the base!]
[Reward:
- C-Point: +2,200
- +3,500 XP
- 700 gold coins]
What? How could Medeia have completed her mission when she hadn’t even properly identified the creatures yet?
[You have uncovered several key points to complete this mission, Host.]
[1. You discovered that they are Mutated Gorillas.
You guessed correctly that they were trying to show gratitude after Lucian killed the person who had controlled and imprisoned them between the canyon walls.] ƒree𝑤ebnσvel-com
[As a bonus reward, the system will also provide you with more information about these creatures.]
[Snow Gorillas (Grade-SS): Mutated Gorilla]
[Although they appear fierce, they are actually gentle-hearted monsters that only eat small animals like insects or herbivore meat. In other words, they will never attack humans out of hunger!]
Medeia stared at the system screen, blinking in disbelief.
"So ... they’re gentle giants?" she muttered. "And here I thought they were going to tear us apart."
The Snow Gorilla closest to her let out a soft grunt, as if it understood what she said. It didn’t sound threatening, in fact, it almost sounded shy.
Lucian raised an eyebrow. "Grade-SS and yet harmless? That’s rare."
Medeia lifted her head and made eye contact with the closest fur creature.
"Were you walking around our base on purpose ... to scare off anyone who might try to harm us?"
