Surviving the Apocalypse: All I Want Is to Find a Husband-Chapter 175: Lost Children
Chapter 175: Lost Children
"Leader, where should we take them?" Harry asked as he looked at the numerous unconscious soldiers inside the military vehicles. He even seemed a bit reluctant to bring them into the base.
Medeia tapped her fingers against her cheek, considering the situation. "Well ... since they’ll immediately go on a rampage the moment they wake up, how about we put them in the greenhouse?"
"The greenhouse?" Harry arched a brow. "You mean the place filled with all those hydroponic plants? Are you sure about this?"
"That’s exactly why!" Medeia grinned. "The moment they wake up and see all that greenery, they’ll think they’ve died and gone to heaven! Do you really think anyone would dare to wreck such a paradise? No way! They’ll hesitate before even thinking about causing trouble in that sacred place."
Harry still looked skeptical, but he had to admit she had a point. "I’ll ask one last time, are you absolutely sure they won’t destroy our precious hydroponics?"
"One hundred percent sure," Medeia said confidently. "You can cut my tongue off if I’m wrong, I mean it."
Harry wasn’t sure what scared him more, the possibility that she was wrong or the thought of Lucian chopping off his hand before he could cut her tongue.
"Fine," he sighed. "I’ll have some people keep an eye on them."
With that settled, Medeia made her way to the medical bay to check on the injured soldiers. Sister Jeanne was there too, assisting the doctors, but since her stamina wasn’t that great, she couldn’t heal everyone in such a short time.
While Medeia took care of the newcomers, Lucian was busy helping distribute firewood to everyone’s rooms, making sure no one would suffer from the cold again that day.
"Do you really think they’ll listen to you?" Naomi stood beside Medeia, arms crossed, watching as the unconscious soldiers were carried into the medical bays one by one. "You know, soldiers aren’t exactly the kind of people you can trust."
Matilda scoffed. "Yeah, soldiers are bastards." Her voice was sharp, laced with resentment. "They get the privilege of carrying weapons like guns, blades, whatever they need to keep people in check."
Matilda didn’t say that carelessly. It wasn’t that she wanted to generalize all soldiers, but the only example she had seen up close was the Warstock, and they were far from a good example.
"Soldiers?" Medeia paused for a moment, her gaze distant. "Instead of soldiers, I prefer to think of them as lost children."
It was because they were too young and easily shaped by their environment. Medeia had seen true cold-blooded killers in hell, and none of them had characteristics like that.
These weren’t cold blood soldiers, they were just boys, ripped from their homes and forced into the military. In a world this broken, survival meant doing whatever it took, especially following orders from those above them.
Then again, that instinct wasn’t unique to them. All humans were wired to survive.
Maybe Medeia was just a little more biased when it came to kids.
Matilda and Naomi exchanged glances. They didn’t say a word, but their expressions made it clear, they had never seen Medeia this melancholic before.
Medeia shook off the moment and turned to Matilda. "Where’s Sierra?"
"Seraphina’s with her," Matilda replied. "Actually ... something strange happened while you were gone."
Medeia’s brows knitted together. "What do you mean? Is she sick again?"
"No, not sick. Nothing dangerous," Matilda assured her quickly. "But ... she seems a little off. She doesn’t cry, but every time someone walks into her room and it’s not you or Mr. Lucian, she looks ... disappointed."
Medeia let out a soft laugh. "That’s ridiculous. You’re imagining things. Lucian and I have barely spent any time with her, so there’s no way she’s attached to us already."
Naomi, who had been listening quietly, finally spoke. "You don’t know that. To her, you and Lucian are the ones who saved her from those bandits. Of course, she’s attached."
Medeia’s expression didn’t change, but something flickered in her eyes.
Just wait until Sierra found out that Medeia was the one who killed her mother.
"Enough nonsense," Medeia muttered, turning on her heel and striding toward the base building.
"Where are you going?" Matilda called after her. "Aren’t you going to wait for the soldiers to wake up in the greenhouse?"
"They won’t wake up for another eight hours." Medeia didn’t stop walking. "I need to check on my daughter— I mean, Sharon’s daughter first."
Damn it! She really needed to stop thinking of Sierra as her daughter.
As she strode down the hallway, the familiar chime of the system suddenly echoed in her mind.
