Surviving in the Beast World with a System-Chapter 24: Meat and Salt
Unseen by her, the system was howling with laughter, pounding on its desk before silently changing the points back.
’This thing is so flashy. There’s no way I can wear it out in this Primitive Beast World...’
In the end, Wu Yue still tied a flap woven from dried grass over her gaudy floral shorts to cover them up.
Gazing at the small porcelain bottle in her hand, Wu Yue was thrilled. She uncorked it, ready to pour the contents into her mouth.
"Friendly reminder: it’s best for the host to take this when you won’t be disturbed~" the system’s voice suddenly cut in, stopping her.
’I just got back from gathering, and everyone’s busy in their own homes. Who’s going to come looking for me?’
Just as Wu Yue was about to argue with the system, she suddenly heard someone calling for her from outside the cave.
"Yue, are you there?" It was Qingcao’s voice, which made Wu Yue jump.
She quickly tied the grass flap over her gaudy floral shorts, making them less conspicuous, before heading toward the cave entrance.
Standing outside the cave was Qingcao, and beside her was a very familiar Half beastman Warrior.
’I think he’s the one Mu Jing dragged over to lick my fingers.’
He was holding a chunk of meat from some unknown animal. It looked as if it had just been torn from a carcass and was still dripping blood.
"This is..." Wu Yue looked over at Qingcao.
Qingcao gave the Half beastman beside her a little push. "This is Shi Lin. He came to bring you some food, but he didn’t know where you lived, so he asked me to show him the way."
Wu Yue waved her hands dismissively. "The hemostatic grass was a gift for you. It’s not worth a piece of meat this big. You should take it back."
The Half beastman shook his head. "I promised I would give this to you."
With that, he stepped forward, thrust the meat into Wu Yue’s hands, and strode away.
By the time Wu Yue managed to get a firm grip on the meat, Shi Lin was already far in the distance.
Looking at the huge piece of meat in her hands, Wu Yue gave a wry smile. "A piece of meat this big... I can’t possibly eat it all by myself."
The weather wasn’t very hot yet, but the meat would still spoil if she left it out until tomorrow.
"Yue, Amu asked me to bring this for you," Qingcao suddenly said, carefully handing her a small stone bowl.
"One second." Wu Yue quickly turned, set the meat down on a patch of dry grass inside the cave, and then carefully accepted the bowl.
Looking at the slightly yellowish granules in the stone bowl, Wu Yue’s heart skipped a beat. "Is this... salt?"
Qingcao nodded. "Yes. The tribesmen who went to trade for salt this year haven’t come back yet, so my family doesn’t have much left." 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
Wu Yue was deeply grateful. In the original owner’s memories, precious salt was the stuff of legends. The only way they replenished their salt was with beast blood.
Even beast blood was a luxury at times. The elderly and those unable to hunt for food weren’t entitled to a share.
She carefully put the precious salt away, then took Qingcao’s hand and led her into the cave. "Qingcao, I want to cut up this meat. Do you know how?"
Qingcao scratched her head. "Cutting up meat is something the warriors do. We don’t have sharp claws."
Wu Yue looked at her own bare, smooth fingernails and inwardly cringed.
’Well then, I’m even more useless.’
"Qingcao, where are the most rocks along the river?" ’If I can’t do it by hand, I’ll have to use tools.’
Though confused as to why Wu Yue was suddenly asking about rocks, Qingcao nodded. "I know a place. It’s where the Beastmen go to bathe after a hunt."
