Chapter 345: Uncertainty

Clifford watched as Kelly confidently slipped off her dress, revealing a cute pink one-piece swimsuit that suited her perfectly. Without hesitation, she sprinted toward the water, her excitement palpable.

When she realized he wasn’t following, she stopped abruptly, turning back to him with a playful frown.

"Come on! Let’s swim!" Kelly called out, waving at him eagerly.

Clifford chuckled at her enthusiasm. With a smile, he quickly removed his shirt and pants, leaving himself in a pair of swim trunks.

"Come on, slowpoke!" Kelly called out again, splashing water his way as Clifford approached.

"I’m coming, I’m coming," he replied with a playful grin, finally stepping into the cool water.

Then, without another moment’s hesitation, he dashed after her.

Kelly squealed with laughter as she saw him coming, immediately breaking into a playful run toward the deeper water. "Catch me if you can!" she teased, her giggles floating through the air.

Clifford’s grin widened as he gave chase. When Clifford tried to grab her, she darted away, kicking up a small wave that splashed over his chest. "Too slow!" she teased, her voice lilting with delight.

"Oh, you think you’re fast?" Clifford challenged, his competitive side kicking in as he lunged toward her.

Kelly squealed and tried to run again, but Clifford was quicker this time. He caught her by the waist, lifting her effortlessly out of the water. She shrieked in surprise, then burst into uncontrollable laughter as he spun her around before setting her back down.

"That’s not fair!" she pouted, brushing her wet hair out of her face.

"All’s fair in love and swimming," Clifford teased, his tone light and playful.

Kelly splashed him in retaliation, her smile never fading. The two fell into a rhythm, splashing, chasing, laughing, as if the world beyond the shoreline didn’t exist.

As they finally paused to catch their breath, standing knee-deep in the water, Kelly tilted her head up to look at him. Her cheeks were flushed, her hair damp and clinging to her shoulders, but she looked happier than ever.

"This... is amazing," she murmured, gazing at the endless ocean stretched before them.

"It is," Clifford agreed, though his eyes never left her. He didn’t mean the ocean, he meant her.

Kelly caught his gaze and blushed slightly before nudging him with her shoulder. "What?"

"Nothing," Clifford said softly, a small, genuine smile playing on his lips. "Just... you’re incredible, Kelly. I hope you know that."

Her cheeks turned an even deeper shade of pink as she glanced away shyly, but the soft smile lingering on her lips told Clifford everything he needed to know. She felt the same way he did.

Taking a step closer, Kelly tilted her head up to meet his gaze. Clifford’s heart skipped a beat as their eyes locked. She had to lift her chin slightly because of his height, and then, ever so slowly, her eyes fluttered shut.

Clifford froze, his body stiffening as he took in the sight of her parted lips and the quiet vulnerability in her expression. His mind raced... this was the moment. This was when he should kiss her.

His breath hitched as he hesitated. Kelly stood there patiently, her trust in him unmistakable, and Clifford felt the weight of that trust and affection pulling him closer.

Clifford took a shaky breath, his nerves melting away as he leaned in, closing the distance between them. His hand gently cupped Kelly’s cheek, his thumb brushing lightly against her soft skin.

She tilted her face into his touch, her lips parting slightly as if inviting him closer. When their lips met, it was like time stopped. The kiss started softly, hesitant yet full of emotion. Clifford savored the sweetness of her lips, warm and inviting, as a wave of tenderness washed over him.

Kelly responded with equal gentleness, her hands lightly resting against his chest. The softness of her touch and the way she kissed him back sent a rush of heat through him.

Their connection deepened as the kiss grew bolder, yet it remained unhurried, an exploration of emotions neither had fully voiced until now.

Clifford’s free hand slid to her back, pulling her closer as the kiss turned deeper. It wasn’t just a kiss; it was a promise, a silent declaration of how much she meant to him.

When they finally parted, both of them were breathless, their foreheads resting against each other as they tried to steady their racing hearts. Kelly’s eyes fluttered open, meeting his with a mix of shyness and affection.

"I’ve been waiting for that," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the gentle sound of waves nearby.

Clifford chuckled softly, his thumb brushing across her cheek. "So have I. And I don’t think I’ll ever stop."

They stood there for a moment, wrapped in each other’s arms, with only the sound of the waves and the faint rustling of the breeze filling the silence. Clifford felt Kelly’s hold on him tighten, her small frame pressing closer as if trying to fuse herself with him.

Then he noticed it, a faint shiver running through her body, followed by the soft, muffled sound of her sobs.

"Kelly?" he whispered gently, concern lacing his tone. He tried to pull back slightly to look at her face, but she clung to him even tighter.

"Don’t," she murmured, her voice trembling. "Just... let me stay like this for a moment."

Clifford’s arms instinctively encircled her more securely, offering whatever comfort he could as he stroked her back. But her words that followed sent a sharp pang through his chest.

"I... I want to stay longer with you, Clifford, if I could," she began, her voice barely audible, yet heavy with emotion. "But my life... my life is not mine anymore."

Clifford froze, his heart thudding loudly in his ears as he listened.

"I don’t know how long I’ll stay here," she continued, her words laced with a sorrow that cut through him. "And I need you to keep that in mind. I need you to always consider the uncertainty of me leaving you behind at any moment... and to accept it."
