Surgery Godfather-Chapter 583 - 531: A Scare Without Danger
Chapter 583: Chapter 531: A Scare Without Danger
Dodge had to stay since he couldn’t answer the question.
Poor Dodge was almost in despair. He had only come to help Robert, hoping to improve his relationship with Yang Ping, but things didn’t quite pan out as expected.
If he stayed, complications would surely follow. Dodge could even foresee his own tragic end.
With the officer’s permission, Ershun began to call Manager Qiu to report the situation.
No matter what, they couldn’t just abandon Dodge. Manager Qiu would surely find a solution.
Yang Ping was standing beside the truck, not boarding it, knowing Dodge was in trouble. However, he wasn’t familiar with the situation and could only wait patiently.
"I am an American, you can’t treat me like this," Frustrated, Dodge exclaimed in a fit of confusion.
"What did he say?"
The officer didn’t understand English and turned to the bespectacled man for translation.
The bespectacled man was astoundingly cultured and knew English. Upon translating Dodge’s words to the officer, the officer drew his handgun and held it to Dodge’s forehead, causing all the soldiers to suddenly aim their rifles at Dodge.
Everyone was taken aback by this sudden shift, and Ershun hastily ended the call.
The previously cordial atmosphere dropped to freezing point, as if the surrounding temperature had plummeted to several degrees below zero.
This was a gun. The moment the trigger was pulled, a bullet would be released.
These were soldiers at war, individuals who had survived deadly situations. Killing someone wouldn’t phase them.
"Say that one more time!"
The officer’s eyes were icy cold. Everyone could feel his lethal intent.
Indeed, the bespectacled man understood English. He immediately translated the officer’s words to Dodge.
Usually unthreatening, the bespectacled man’s face had turned icy, the tone of his voice completely different, harboring an air of murderous intent and hatred.
The officer had disengaged the safety on his gun, loading it with bullets.
Ershun immediately sensed the danger.
As a former soldier, he felt the potent murderous intent. These men weren’t merely threatening Dodge; their intent to kill was real and could be acted upon at any moment.
In his desperation, Dodge believed that he could intimidate them. However, his words only led to a life-threatening situation.
His legs were shaking uncontrollably. He could feel a cold liquid trickling down uncontrollably, running down his thighs. He was unable to utter a single word.
"Officer, he truly is our friend. He accompanied the medical plane to pick up our wounded. Now that the medical plane can’t take off, we have to detour to Oman."
Ershun remained calm. The situation called for efforts to defuse it. If the soldiers became angry, Dodge was a dead man.
"Officer, I am a student of Chinese Professor Yang and have been to China. I am conversant with Chinese, and my Chinese name is Radish Head. He hasn’t been to China and doesn’t understand Chinese. Professor Yang has never taught him directly. Recently, Professor Yang was invited to Saudi Arabia to perform a charitable surgery — the patient was a poor infant from Yemen. This surgery was a rare, high-risk procedure internationally. As a result, I brought Dodge to Saudi Arabia to learn from the surgery. Later, Professor Yang went to Yemen to rescue a friend from a vehicular accident, and we followed to assist him."
Robert quickly clarified the situation.
"I’m sorry! I’m truly a doctor," Dodge managed to stutter.
The officer glanced at Robert and then at Ershun. Ershun nodded in agreement. The officer’s expression softened slightly. He slowly lowered his gun, and the rest did the same.
Dodge was on the verge of fainting. Ershun and Robert tried to help him, but the soldiers gestured for them to stay away.
"Officer, he is indeed our friend. Due to the urgency of the situation, related documents haven’t been processed."
The officer looked at the trembling Dodge, believing in Ershun’s words.
At that moment, the bespectacled man suggested a possible course of action to the officer: A student of a Chinese professor may never have been to China or speak Chinese, but they should know some personal details about their mentor’s grandfather, such as his name, the hospital where he works, and his medical achievements. As long as Dodge could provide this info, they could bring in the professor for verification. If Dodge could share this information, it would prove the validity of his statement. If not, he was certainly deceitful.
Heeding the bespectacled man’s new strategy, the officer decided to give Dodge one last chance.
"What is the name of your mentor’s grandfather?"
Dodge eagerly grabbed at this lifeline. This was a question he knew the answer to. He had gathered a wealth of information on Yang Ping to outdo him during case discussions and could recite a few of his major papers.
"Yang Ping!"
"Which hospital in China?" The officer continued questioning.
"Sanbo Hospital!"
"Medical achievements?" The bespectacled man asked the third question directly.
Dodge fluently named a few of his papers.
Only then did the bespectacled man signal a soldier to get Yang Ping, saying, "Could you please get the Chinese doctor we had just now."
Apparently, the bespectacled man truly understood Chinese. He was the cultured one in their team, and his strategies were indeed effective.
Yang Ping, who had been standing by the truck all along, immediately came over. He had been too far from Dodge to hear their conversation.
"I’m really sorry, but I need to ask you a few questions to verify his identity," the officer asked politely.
"Please go ahead!"
Yang Ping didn’t know what they were up to, but he knew he had to cooperate with them.
"Your name?"
"Yang Ping!"
"Which hospital do you work at in China?"
"Sanbo Hospital!"
"Your medical achievements?"
Medical achievements, this question is too broad, it’s hard to answer.
Glasses guy immediately supplemented, "That is, the papers you’ve written."
It seemed like Glasses guy might be a college student. This checkpoint was probably very important, and it served all kinds of people, so it was logical to assign a highly cultured soldier to man it.
Yang Ping listed several papers published on top-tier journals, which perfectly matched what Dodge said earlier.
The officer and Glasses guy exchanged a glance, thinking there should be no problem. No one trying to sneak past the checkpoint by blending into the crowd would be this familiar with Chinese doctors, so the officer approved of this approach.
After thinking for a moment, the officer said, "You can all go. We will soon be crossing the desert. Are you sure you have enough water?"
The soldiers promptly disbanded and the barrier was now open.
Ershun sighed a breath of relief, shook hands with the officer for a farewell, everyone got in the car, and the car team began to depart. Soldiers along the road waved to them.
To maintain air circulation, both sides of the truck canopy were open, making two large windows.
As Yang Ping watched the waving soldiers, he felt a mix of emotions.
He had never felt such a profound sense of the word "Motherland".
After about ten minutes, Yang Ping saw several armored vehicles on the side of the road, and vaguely, a lot of soldiers were in ambush.
This checkpoint must be very important, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many soldiers lying in wait.
The following journey took the convoy off the beaten track, toward less populated areas. This way, they could move faster and were less likely to encounter checkpoints.
To minimize bumps, the truck was laid with thick cushions. Everyone left one person to watch Ershun and the rest tried to sleep against the railing.
Before entering the desert, everyone stopped to rest, eat dry food, and drink water before carrying on.
The vast darkness of the desert, under the sparse moon and stars.
Dodge felt like he was surviving a catastrophe. He sat on the truck in silence until Robert comforted him by wrapping an arm around his shoulder.
Yang Ping handed a bottle of water to Dodge and Robert took it and urged Dodge to drink some water.
Everyone could smell the urine stench on Dodge’s pants, but everyone pretended not to know.
After roughly more than twenty hours, finally, they crossed the border.
Miraculously, there was no resistance at the border of Oman and Yemen. The convoy entered Oman directly. After driving into Oman for about ten minutes, a helicopter came across them. It flew low, shouting at the convoy.
The convoy stopped and the helicopter circled a few times before leaving. Soon a patrolling military vehicle came to inspect the convoy.
Compared to Yemen, Oman has always been relatively stable. Although it can’t be compared to Saudi Arabia, it’s still one of the wealthier countries in the Persian Gulf.
Oman has a somewhat isolated feel to it; it’s quietly made its fortune through its rich oil resources, its citizens live in peace and pleasure, life is good.
Yemen, on the other hand, is frequently marred by civil war. Despite abundant oil resources and excellent ports, it remains desperately poor.
This goes to show how crucial stability is for a country’s development.
Without a stable environment, everything equates to zero.
The military vehicle stopped and soldiers checked everyone’s passports. Next, they got information about the situation, made a phone call to report to their superiors. Finally, they told Ershun that they were in Zufar Province, and if they continued along the road for another 60-odd kilometers, they would reach the best hospital in Zufar.
By now, it was deep into the second night. The convoy stayed on the road.
The size of Oman’s provinces is about the same as the size of my county.
Finally, they found the hospital that the soldiers mentioned as the best one. Everyone transferred Ershun to the emergency department and got a bed for him.
Li Zehui found out that he actually knew someone there. When he was doing medical support, one of the doctors from Zufar had attended his training class. He talked to the emergency department’s doctor only to find out this doctor was a surgeon at this hospital.
The emergency doctor helped Li Zehui get in touch with the surgeon. This Omani doctor was ecstatic when he saw Li Zehui.
After finding out that they were escorting an injured person from China, the doctor became even more excited.
The Omani doctor helped them get a bed in the ICU; Ershun was transferred to the ICU ward.
Ershun had a fever and had not been checked with any equipment in over twenty hours.
Yang Ping wrote down the condition of the illness and the next steps in terms of what needed to be done, then told the Omani doctor. The enthusiastic Omani doctor had the ICU doctors execute the instructions right away. They put Ershun under various monitors and drew blood for testing.
Now that there was an ICU bed, Yang Ping felt much better. He decided to let Ershun stay here for a few days until he was feeling better before flying him to Saudi Arabia. If all went well, there may not be a need to go to Saudi Arabia.
The Omani doctor arranged for everyone to stay at a hotel nearby and Dodge headed to the bathroom to shower.
Everyone ate and showered before retiring to rest themselves. They were completely worn out.
Yang Ping was worried about Ershun’s safety. Thanks to the Omani doctor’s intervention, the hospital agreed to let Yang Ping and Li Zehui rest in the ICU’s staff room. If an emergency arose, the on-duty doctor could easily get their support.
The Omani doctor also stayed in the ICU staff room with them.
