Super Gene Ⅱ: Evolution-Chapter 1095: Flipping the Table
Chapter 1095 -1095: Flipping the Table
As the two spoke, Lin Shen scanned the surroundings and couldn’t help but pause in surprise.
He saw that everyone else at their table, including Die Fast and Die Early, were leaning over the table, their faces nearly touching the dishes, hovering so close they were almost stuck to the plates.
Their mouths remained shut as their faces moved above the plates, their noses continuously sniffing back and forth. Then, they straightened up with expressions of rapture, as if they had just savored the finest delicacies and wines.
Lin Shen turned to look at the other tables. Everyone there was doing the same—leaning over to sniff—but none of them touched their chopsticks or actually ate the dishes on the table or drank the wine in their cups.
The sight unsettled Lin Shen a little. Even though he knew there were no ghosts in this world, only an array of strange creatures, the scene still gave him an eerie feeling.
“Could it be that they don’t eat the food or drink the wine because there’s something wrong with them?” Lin Shen pondered to himself. But then he thought, he wasn’t afraid of poisoning—if someone had really tampered with it, it might even suit his plans.
At that thought, he decided: fake poisoning might help uncover more secrets.
With that in mind, Lin Shen picked up the chopsticks from the table, grabbed a piece of meat, and brought it to his mouth, intending to sample its flavor—after all, it’s better to fight on a full stomach.
But after just two bites, Lin Shen spat out the meat he had chewed.
It wasn’t because the meat was poisonous and unbearable. Rather, the meat had absolutely no flavor. Truly tasteless, like chewing on wax; swallowing it was simply impossible.
For the first time in his life, Lin Shen realized that the expression “like chewing wax” wasn’t just a figure of speech—it was a literal description.
A piece of glossy, three-layer pork belly, fat and lean alternating, glistening with sauce—it tasted exactly like wax.
Seeing the others at the table staring at him, Lin Shen quickly coughed awkwardly and reached for another dish.
But the result remained the same. All the dishes on the table were completely flavorless, as if they were shoddy imitations made of wax.
Lin Shen quietly spat out what was in his mouth, his heart uneasy with suspicion: “What the hell is this? When I was young, I heard ghost stories about offerings left for spirits. The food would lose its flavor after being consumed by ghosts, tasting just like wax. Could I have actually encountered ghosts?”
Though Lin Shen’s mind was thematically disturbed, he kept a neutral expression. He resolved not to touch the food anymore—whether poisoned or not, he couldn’t stomach it.
Thousands of people gathered at this banquet, not eating or drinking but sniffing in silence. The atmosphere was undeniably eerie and bizarre.
Fortunately, those people paid them no heed, allowing Lin Shen and Wei Wufu to sit there, straight-backed and conspicuous among the crowd.
After a while, Di Esi finally stepped out of the backyard, accompanied by that sophisticated yet alluring woman.
“Wei, Tian, thank you both for attending my wedding,” Di Esi approached Lin Shen and company. Beside him were two paper men carrying trays, each one presenting him with wine glasses as he spoke: “I toast to you both.”
The paper men carried their trays over to them and handed each of them a glass of wine.
Lin Shen held the wine glass, looking at Di Esi. Di Esi had addressed him as Tian, not Lin Shen. This indicated that his awareness was intact—he hadn’t exposed Lin Shen’s real name in front of others.
Still, Lin Shen couldn’t wrap his mind around it. Could someone like Di Esi really fall in love at first sight and decide to marry a woman he had just met?
As Di Esi raised his glass, Wei Wufu didn’t do the same. Instead, he stared at Di Esi and asked, “You… heart…”
No one else could decipher Wei Wufu’s cryptic remark, but Lin Shen understood it clearly. Wei Wufu was asking Di Esi if his decision was genuine—whether Di Esi truly wanted to marry Yan Li from the bottom of his heart.
“Yan Li is the best, most perfect woman I’ve ever met in my life. To marry her is the greatest blessing I could ever hope for,” Di Esi replied earnestly, his expression devoid of deceit.
“Then we wish you a blissful marriage, eternal harmony, and hearts joined as one,” Lin Shen raised his glass and clinked it against Di Esi’s.
Di Esi clinked his glass with Wei Wufu’s and downed it in one gulp, then laughed and said, “What a refreshing drink! Don’t overdo it today; there’ll be plenty of time in the future. You’re welcome to visit me anytime.”
Lin Shen and Wei Wufu exchanged glances and drained their glasses.
The wine tasted no different from water—perhaps even more devoid of taste than water itself.
After finishing his drink, Di Esi moved on to other tables to continue offering toasts, leaving the two of them behind.
Wei Wufu rose, preparing to leave, but Lin Shen stopped him.
“Where are you going?” Lin Shen asked.
“Thing… check…” Wei Wufu replied.
Lin Shen understood that Di Esi must be up to something. But with so many eyes watching them, investigating right now was impossible.
Besides, Di Esi’s earlier remarks sounded like casual invitations. Beneath them lay a subtle hint—a plea for them to drink less and leave quietly.
Lin Shen suspected that Di Esi must have been threatened by the Immortal-Returning City, and that’s why he was following their orders unwillingly.
Someone like Di Esi wouldn’t normally succumb to threats. Even with his life held in someone’s hands, he wouldn’t compromise.
But now, Di Esi was cooperating. Lin Shen could think of only one logical explanation: the leverage wasn’t Di Esi’s own life.
“Could Yan Li be using our lives to threaten Di Esi, forcing his hand?” Lin Shen felt this was likely the case.
“Di Esi intends to sacrifice himself to ensure our safety,” Lin Shen thought bitterly. “Di Esi, you fool. Do you really take a recluse from Yin Mountain Star like the Immortal-Returning City seriously? Forget just one Immortal-Returning City—even the Star God Palace wouldn’t find it easy to take our lives.”
Having worked it all out, Lin Shen saw no reason to continue playing these eerie games with these menacing beings.
“Wei, flip the table,” Lin Shen instructed, knowing full well that once he and Wei left, Di Esi would undoubtedly launch into battle, risking everything.
Wei didn’t hesitate. He gripped the table, stood, and flipped it over in one swift motion.
The table crashed to the ground, its contents scattering everywhere. Everyone stood up, their eyes fixed on Lin Shen and Wei with murderous intent.
“Why do you insist on doing this?” Di Esi, who had been toasting at other tables, sighed in exasperation.
“If you want a fight, bring it all at once—spare us the needless chatter,” Lin Shen replied, as he and Wei Wufu stood back-to-back, watching the hostile crowd slowly encircle them.
“If that’s how it is, then let’s enjoy the fight,” Di Esi tore off his groom’s attire, cast aside his hat, and allowed his sacred carapace to envelop his body.
“Di Esi, are you sure about this? If you break the union, both you and them will meet your end,” the woman beside him warned coldly.
“My friends don’t fear death… and neither do I…” Di Esi stepped forward to join Lin Shen and Wei Wufu, standing with them, back-to-back as they prepared to face the incoming thousands.
“Dying isn’t as easy as you think. Have you ever experienced the agony of being unable to live nor die?” the woman hissed with chilling contempt as a sinister aura arose from the strange figures around them. Spectral, ghost-like Divine Souls materialized, encircling the three.
Lin Shen’s gaze froze. Thousands of twisted beings surrounded them, each emanating the power of Upper Gods, each summoning Divine Souls. The overwhelming force felt utterly insurmountable.
Finally, Lin Shen understood why Di Esi had capitulated. The three of them didn’t stand a chance against thousands of Upper Gods—not even the remotest possibility.
