Summoned with an SSS-Rank Portal Skill-Chapter 256: Bandits in the Sewer
The first thing they needed to do was find Burt as quickly as possible. It wasn't a good idea to continue searching for the other man who had disappeared without at least finding their friend.
"Let's keep going straight," William said, "it's humanly impossible for him to have gone anywhere else."
The path was straight with no other way to go, meaning Burt had to have stayed on that path. William and Rena were sure of it!
Rena would have known if he had passed her. They continued forward, this time looking for any trace indicating Burt's presence. They found nothing.
This was a bit frustrating for them, but William found something else. He noticed that this sewer path looped around and ended up in the same area where he had found the torn shirt!
The shirt was there in the same place he had left it earlier.
"We're back here," William said, "I think Burt might be in the same direction I was following. Could he have been taken by the creatures down here?"
It was too much of a coincidence. William was almost certain that Burt had been taken by the creatures that had taken the other man who had come to explore the sewers. Everything pointed to it!
Burt wasn't stupid enough to get lost down there either, so for him to disappear, he had to have been kidnapped or attacked in some way. That was the only thing that made sense.
"Everything points to that," Rena said, "let's keep moving forward and hope that everything is alright with our friend."
Rena held her staff in her hands, prepared to use her attack magic if anything appeared to attack them. She didn't want to take any risks and stand around thinking she was safe.
The two continued forward, and soon noticed the presence of other people down there.
Deep down, William had been expecting to find magical creatures that would attack them, but that wasn't the case. What was waiting for them down there were other humans!
They saw lights, some barrels with things inside that William had no idea what they were, and of course, sleeping bags.
The group of people down there looked like bandits.
"Did they capture another guy down here? I don't understand why they decided to keep coming down here to the sewers," one of the men said.
"I think this one we captured came looking for information about the other one who disappeared," the bandit replied, "we have to be careful not to attract too much attention."
William and Rena hid and listened to what those bandits had to say. They were certainly speaking about Burt.
"What should we do now?" Rena whispered.
She held her staff tightly, waiting for William's command.
They were tense. There were around five bandits, and they looked quite capable as well—power-wise. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com
So, fighting against them wouldn't be that easy for William and Rena.
Also, what if they started to fight and then more bandits showed up out of nowhere? The chance of that happening was pretty high.
"Let's wait for the right moment to go," William said.
In the end, he decided to avoid fighting until he understood more of the situation. The bandits didn't think anyone would show up there, so they were lazy, not paying enough attention to their surroundings.
All William had to do was wait for the right moment to move and slip past them without drawing attention.
It got even easier for him once three of the bandits moved to the sleeping bags to rest. Only two remained there.
"This is our chance," he said.
With quick and quiet movements, they passed through the bandits without being seen. The two bandits who were still awake were busy talking to each other about random stuff and drinking beer.
After getting past them, William and Rena continued moving forward, looking for any sign of Burt. They saw a way out of the sewers!
Different from the other entrance they had used, that one had bandits coming in and out of it.
Just like before, they had to wait for the opportune moment to move if they wanted to avoid attracting attention. Doing something like that required patience.
William had plenty of patience. Eventually, he and Rena left the sewers, emerging outside in the middle of a forest.
The area was situated behind the city where they had been moments ago.
"These bandits are accessing the city through the sewers," William said, "this way they can avoid security and enter the city through the sewers. So in the end, it wasn't monsters that the people living in the city had seen…"
The silhouettes the people saw belonged to the bandits and not monsters.
William had no idea why they wanted to enter that city through that location, and why they had kidnapped the man the security chief talked about, and Burt too.
Anyway, William and Rena left the area. It wouldn't take long for another bandit to show up if they stayed there.
Only three minutes passed since they left, and a group of bandits appeared, going inside the sewers. William saw that and sighed, "it's a good thing we left."
But now their situation just got a lot worse. Before, they only had the sewers to search for Burt and the missing man, but now that they were outside, well, Burt could be anywhere.
So, where should they look for him?
"He can't be far," William said.
What gave him confidence in knowing that was the fact Burt went missing not long ago. It was just humanly impossible for him to vanish in less than one hour. It just didn't make sense.
Burt had to be in the area. William knew that the best way to get answers was by finding one of the bandits and getting the answers by force.
So, that's what he did. He waited for a bandit to show up alone. When that happened, he emerged from the darkness and attacked the bandit.
