Substitute Wife for the Mafia King R18-Chapter 453: Our New Roles
Although I didn’t want to admit it at first, I knew that Desmond truly meant well for us. In his mind, and whatever plan that he had crafted out, he truly believed that it was best for us to launch our political career right at the very top.
Truthfully, I wasn’t sure how the dynamic of Bradon’s new position was going to play out for our personal lives, but I wanted to keep an open mind and put in the effort to give it my best shot.
"I guess this is the best for you too so I can keep on helping you with your work," Bradon stated flatly.
This time Desmond laughed out loud rather than chuckling softly. It was apparent that he wasn’t at all offended.
"Yeah, definitely not wrong. I will benefit greatly from your continued assistance. However, I won’t be the only one. You two will benefit from this, along with everybody living in the country. I told you before, the country needs change, and I can’t do it all alone," Desmond said after collecting himself.
Bradon and I both held our tongues as we waited to hear what else Desmond had to say.
"This isn’t just some kind of cheap bargain. I truly care for both of you, and I know that you two will stand by me in situations when everybody else will undoubtedly falter. You two believe in what I believe in, and that is the most important thing," Desmond said with confidence.
I exchanged a glance with Bradon, but his face was guarded and difficult to read. However, the look in his eyes appeared to be softer, as if what Desmond had said had struck a chord within him.
I was reminded that Bradon and Desmond had a longstanding relationship and had been working together for years. Perhaps the bond between them ran deeper than I initially evaluated.
"Thank you, Desmond," I thanked him softly.
Bradon looked just as surprised as I was when his eyes met mine. Even I didn’t think that I would thank Desmond out loud like that.
However, that was honestly what I felt at the time. Regardless of his reasons, he had handed Bradon and me the opportunity of a lifetime, and I was going to put everything that I’ve got into not screwing it up.
"Thank you, Dahlia, and thank you, Bradon. Dahlia, Bradon needs you, and I need you. You’ll be the glue that will hold all of us together. Please do not ever forget your worth," Desmond said.
I was too stunned to say anything, and Bradon seemed lost in thought. Before either of us could recover from the bluntness of the king’s words, the line clicked dead because Desmond had suddenly hung up on us.
That marked the end of our conversation with the King and also the start of the next phase in our lives.
"I guess he trusts us in his own way," I said softly as I felt Bradon wrap his arms around the small of my back and draw me close to his side.
"I guess the beginning is now," I whispered back before turning around, his arms still hugging me tightly in return.
...
The weeks that followed felt blurry, as if everything had been blended together in a wild whirlwind of a storm.
Understandably, after what happened to my family-specifically my father and his downfall from his position of political power-everyone had something to say about my husband becoming the next prime minister and about me becoming the first lady of the country.
Many thought that I purposefully ruined my father in order to replace him with my future husband. Although that wasn’t exactly my intention at the very start, I guess that I couldn’t blame them for getting it wrong based on the outcome that they observed.
Bradon really did replace my father as the next prime minister of the country, and the shift in the power balance within the kingdom took place just as Desmond wanted.
Bradon’s victory wasn’t a quiet one. Every newspaper headline carried his name and printed his face. Every online channel and every broadcast tried their best to dissect his first steps in life, even from a young age, with whatever information they could find.
Of course, at the end, the news was nothing more than a mix of facts and fiction, twisted in order to engage the audience for ratings. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Our days were filled with meetings, and official dinners filled our evenings, sometimes stretching into our nights. Despite everything, Bradon did not let the pressure or the stress get to him. All the endless requests, both reasonable and unreasonable, were dealt with in a timely manner, and his decisions were spot-on and extremely precise.
Desmond did not leave us on our own, making sure that Bradon had a very talented team to support him.
For that, I would feel eternally thankful to our king for helping us, even if it also meant that he was helping himself and his own plans.
I loved my Bradon even more as I spent time close to his side. I could tell that he was carrying such a huge burden that perhaps I didn’t even fully understand, yet he carried it all with a calm grace that I had never seen before in my life.
He listened to the people more than he spoke. He studied topics that were unfamiliar to him endlessly until he could converse and challenge an expert in the area. When he finally gave his word and his decision, everybody had no choice but to listen. I knew that Bradon was an amazing leader with everything that he had accomplished so far in his life, but it seemed like he was still pushing boundaries forward.
The path to his personal development seemed endless, and I enjoyed observing him every single step of the way and supporting him as we went. To everyone in the country, he was a strong and reliable leader, but to me, he was still my Bradon. The more we spent time together and the more hardship that we faced, the more our fates seemed to intertwine with each other.
