Chapter 997: Chapter 997 : Shut in Acceptance

*Leo*

I heard the commotion before I saw it.

My heart raced as men started to yell and run past the room I was in, barking orders to one another. I could only make out some of the words but I gathered just enough to piece together that it had to be my men.

I struggled feebly against the thick binds around my wrists, wincing slightly when the metal further pressed into my raw skin.

Things were about to get ugly. I needed to get out of here and fast.

I lifted my head and watched as men continued to rush past my room. I felt desperation well up inside of me as I looked at my surroundings. If I tilted too far, I would fall on my side and be even more immobile. The panic threatening to burst from me was starting to become difficult to press down.

I breathed in through my nose, long and deep, willing myself to once again think about Bianca and the precious baby she was carrying inside of her that was half me.

I gripped the locket in my palm, my eyes widening when I remembered the cryptic way the guard was behaving.

Why would he have given me this locket? It wouldn’t have been out of pity.

I tried to recall the expression on his face but probably due to a combination of my injuries, fatigue, hunger and thirst, I wasn’t thinking the most clearly.

I must have missed something.

I fiddled with the locket in my hand, running my fingers over the smooth metal. A thought crossed me and I was able to wedge my fingers into the little slit to pop the tiny necklace open.

I couldn’t see what I was doing but I could immediately tell what was inside of the locket. I immediately recognized the feel of the smooth but sharp blade.

He wasn’t a traitor after all. He had been trying to help me.

I grinned. This was exactly what I needed.

My body felt heavy and I was extremely weak from the lack of nourishment. I had to struggle to get it out and carefully slipped it into the lock of the cuffs. I tried in vain to twist it but it was difficult to do it at this angle. I looked around wildly for a solution, once again forcing myself to calm down so that I could think clearly.

I shifted my chair back toward the wall. I only had one shot at this. If I missed, I would likely fall and be completely stuck.

I twisted my wrists so that they were facing the wall. I squeezed my eyes shut and jumped up, pushing my feet against the ground so I could get momentum.

Pain shot through my arms at the impact but I forgot about it immediately when the cuffs clicked open and fell to the floor.

A new wave of fatigue fell over me and I was somehow able to pry the blade out of the cuffs so that I could slice the rope binding my ankles. I had been tied up for so long that my legs were completely numb when I stood. I gritted my teeth and ignored the pain that was flying through my limbs.

I didn’t have much hope that the door would be unlocked and my eyebrows flew up when I simply pushed it open. I had no time to question it and sprinted out, ignoring the way my legs tensed up under the sudden pressure.

I looked around, trying to make sense of my surroundings. It was easy to just follow the sound of the chaos going in one direction. A guard turned the corner, his dark eyes widening upon seeing me.

I willed my body to move forward to punch the guy but it wouldn’t obey. My muscles felt utterly useless. It might take some time for me to get enough strength to do much other than run at a moderate pace.

I tried to grab the guy before he could radio the other members to warn them of my escape. As soon as he had his hand up to his headset, a shot rang out and he fell to the hard floor, revealing the spy guard who had left me the locket.

I met his gaze and I wondered if he could read the way I was putting the pieces of his actions together. He locked eyes with me and nodded once, confirming everything with that one jerky movement.

I had been angry all this time, vowing to pummel this guy whenever I escaped but he had been helping me the whole time, waiting for a chance to help me escape.

He was going to get a hell of a raise after this. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

We could hear footsteps and booming voices coming toward us. The spy was suddenly alert and gestured to me to follow him. I had no choice in the matter and I more than trusted him now after he helped me escape.

He led me down the hallway and we took a sharp turn down a dimly-lit corridor. It had to be some kind of secret passage.

We didn’t speak as we hurried along. My muscles were starting to work again. Every step I took was painful but it also seemed to reignite my body. I needed to be moving around to get the momentum back. I was already starting to feel like myself despite the fact that I was extremely injured.

It was more than likely the adrenaline that was allowing me to keep going. If I was completely calm, I likely would be a mess on the floor.

“Not much further,” the spy called to me, glancing back over his shoulder. He gestured ahead of us. “It’s just on the other end of this hallway. There’s a passageway that we can escape through.”

I nodded but then smirked. “You really ought to consider acting,” I told him with a gruff laugh, my voice still scratchy from lack of water. “You really had me fooled. I was going to put a bullet through you before I realized what you had been doing.”

The guy grinned crookedly. “I had a feeling that I had you more fooled than I meant to,” he said. “Which I figured was actually a good thing. It made it much easier to fool the Angel members if you were acting all hateful toward me.”

I was going to have to move this kid up in the ranks. He was wasting his talents in front of the surveillance screens back at the warehouse. We needed him where the action was. I owed him not just my life but Bianca’s and my unborn baby’s as well.

My heart warmed as I thought about how close I was to seeing Bianca again. All of the torture and beatings I endured would have been worth it if I could just hold my fiancee in my arms again.

I could see the entrance leading to what had to be the secret passage. Just as the spy crossed over the threshold, a rattling boom echoed through the walls. My heart leaped into my throat at the explosion.

Time seemed to slow as the walls began to shake. I stumbled backwards just as a chunk of the ceiling fell and crashed to the floor, successfully blocking off the entryway to the passageway out and separating me from the spy.

I cursed and stared at the pile of rubble for a moment, debating if I could be able to climb it and squeeze through the tiny opening between the pile and ceiling. It was far too risky. I needed to find another way out. I would most likely be crushed if I didn’t move.

I whirled around and sprinted in the other direction. I had no idea where I was going but I would just have to improvise. I cursed as another piece of ceiling fell in front of me. I jumped over it and pressed on, ducking my head slightly as dust began to puff up in clouds around me, further hindering my vision.

It was at that moment that I realized where I was. I was in the old abandoned steel factory building. That was evident in how old and rickety this building was. It was practically falling apart on its own without the help from explosives.

I reached down and plucked a gun out of the hands of a fallen guy. I had no time to check if he was alive. I could tell right away he was an Angel member.

I grunted as a piece of tile hit my bruised shoulder but I tightened my hold on my weapon and pressed on, determined to make it out of here. I couldn’t fail now, not when I was so close to seeing Bianca again.

I cursed when I came to another hallway only to find it blocked off as well. My shoulders slumped and I looked around, knowing I was trapped.

This wasn’t good.

As if things couldn’t get any worse, I saw a figure appear through the smoke. Despite the fact that we were likely going to be buried in rubble, Andre looked almost cheerful as he grinned at me.

I wasn’t afraid of him but I had to brace myself against a nearby wall to stay upright, the fatigue finally catching up with me. I lifted my gun and glared at him. He must have known that I would come this way. He probably had this whole dump bugged so he could watch me even as the walls crumbled around us.

“As pleasant as it is to see you,” I started sarcastically over the chaos. “If we want to make it out of here alive, we should get going.”

Andre just stared at me before cocking his gun. “I would rather die right here and take you down with me than risk letting you get away.”

I shouldn’t have been shocked by this. Andre’s hatred for me ran deep and it showed in the way his dark eyes glinted.

I couldn’t help but goad him a little. It wasn’t looking like I was going to be able to escape after all. We were both trapped in here and I was far too weak to fight Andre off and scramble out of the rubble.

I looked down, silently apologizing to Bianca. I wondered if she had any idea how close I came to returning to her and our baby.

Andre was directly in front of me now. I refused to lower my gun or fall down, despite the fact that it felt like a ton of bricks was pushing me down. “I had the perfect plan to run you all out of LA. Your little girlfriend completely ruined them!” He was practically shaking with rage now.

That familiar pride when I thought about Bianca bloomed in my chest. I smirked at him. “Actually, she’s my future wife.”

Andre just narrowed his eyes and lifted his gun even higher, fingering the trigger and preparing to shoot.

I shut my eyes in acceptance.
