Chapter 968: Chapter 968 : Bullet Dodged

*Bianca*

“Hey there, gorgeous.”

I’d come home to a lot of weird things but seeing an overeager college boy swagger up to me like he was the hottest shit on the planet, lean over me as he laid his arm against the wall behind my head and hit on me had to be the weirdest.

He lifted the shades off of his eyes, revealing the baby blues underneath as he looked me up and down like I was a tasty snack. Demeaning and violating all at the same time, I took a step back.

My back hit the wall and I stared at him confused and weirded out as he leaned over me, his breath smelling like a pungent beer.

“My name is Darion but you can just call me tomorrow, angel.”

I cringed from the pick-up line, my eyes searching for an escape due to how uncomfortable this was. What was he even doing in here? Was he working with Leo? And where the hell was my fiance at the moment cause I’m pretty sure he’d blow his top if he saw this.

My eyes flickered around the room and I stiffened as I locked eyes on Leo’s form at the top of the stairs. Hands balled up at his side, veins protruding from his neck as he clenched his jaw, there was a death sentence in his eyes aimed directly at the weirdo hitting on me.

I knew at that moment that if I let this go for one more second, Leo would kill him.

“Leo, wait!”

I ducked under the arm of the weirdo coming onto me and rushed past him straight to where my fiance was now storming down the stairs with hell’s fury in his eyes. He barely even reached out with his arm, not glancing at me once from his staredown at what’s-his-face as I reached his side.

“Leo, it’s okay. He probably didn’t know,” I whispered to him softly, trying to calm his raging jealousy and anger as it brewed just under the surface.

Leo curled his arm around my waist tightly, tucking me into his side. I could feel every ragged breath from his lungs as he struggled to remain calm. I’d never seen him so angry but then again, no guy had ever tried to hit on me right in front of him and so shamelessly too.

Leo inhaled deeply, struggling to keep calm, even shutting his eyes as he held onto me so tightly I felt like I was being squeezed to death. But I just rubbed my hand down his back, worried a bit as he slowly calmed down.

Just as it looked like Leo was going to let this go, the asshat just had to open his mouth.

“Yo, Leo, is this hottie yours? My bad, man,” D-something grinned widely, rubbing the back of his head sheepishly as he glanced me up and down one more time, smirking. “Nice body, nicer face. Just what I expect from a leader over here.”

All my attempts to keep Leo calm went out the fucking window. I stared at the asshole open-mouthed, not sure how someone could be so insulting and clueless at the same time while Leo pinned him with the coldest look I’d ever seen him give.

Even when facing down Michael, Leo hadn’t been this pissed.

“Darion,” Leo called out sharply, gently letting go of me so he could pull me behind him as he stood in front of me protectively. “This is my fiancee, Bianca. I don’t ever want to hear another disrespectful word about her out of your mouth again, do you understand? You give her the same respect you give me or I will make sure you never get the chance to even mutter her name ever again.”

Chills ran down my spine at how utterly threatening my fiance was but it did its job.

Darion stiffened, his face turned pale and then red.

“Sorry,” he muttered, glancing away at the wall. “I thought you were still a bachelor. Didn’t know you were taken. My bad. I get it. I won’t say anything more to her.”

“Good.”

Leo’s voice was still cold but he relaxed a bit as Darion bowed his head like he was truly reflecting on himself. I didn’t know how much I bought that but I didn’t want to judge him quite yet.

“So you are Darion,” I said awkwardly, trying to muster a polite smile as I stepped back up to Leo’s side. I glanced at Leo pointedly and he nodded.

“This is Darion, he’s the potential successor that Alessandro chose. He’ll be shadowing me for a couple of weeks until we decide if he has what it takes to take over,” Leo explained, keeping his words vague but sharp at the same time.

I saw Darion’s face fall, then sour.

“Right,” I said, highly uncomfortable with how tense it still was. “Um, if you’re staying here, then don’t mind me. Continue on with your tour. I don’t want you to get lost like I did my first few days here.”

I saw Leo’s lips quirk up at the reminder and I smiled, feeling relieved to see him lighten up but Darion just eyed me.

“You got lost?” He snorted, looking at me like I was pathetic. “In this small ass house? Might as well get you a GPS for a dollhouse then.”

“Right,” I said unenthusiastically, trying to hide how utterly put off I was by every word out of this guy’s mouth. Idiot was the kindest word I could think of but it still didn’t suit him entirely. “Have fun then.”

I untangled myself from Leo’s tight grip, ignoring his puppy dog eyes as I stormed away into the kitchen. As I left, I barely heard Darion’s obnoxious voice call out in what I assumed was supposed to be a whisper.

“That’s your official girl, right? Man, I can’t wait to see your side chicks.”

I clenched my fists around an imaginary throat, fuming as I did my best to just let it go and ignore it. There was a special pit in hell for guys like that and I hoped he would burn for every smug comment.

I fumed silently as I pulled out my books so I could get some studying in but as I did so, I caught another figure hiding away in the breakfast nook with a mug filled with what I was pretty sure wasn’t water.

Franky gave me an irritated look and I knew almost immediately what was going on just from how worn out and pissed off he looked at the same time. It was exactly what I was feeling right now.

I moved my books over to the nook, sliding in across from him.

“So that’s who Alessandro chose?” I asked bluntly, hoping he’d say no even if I knew he wouldn’t.

“Yes.”

“Are you really sure about that?”

“Unfortunately.”

“Fuck,” I sighed, relenting. “He’s a bit....”

“Yeah,” was all Franky said in response, drowning himself in his mug.

“And I suppose you wouldn’t be able to just send him back and exchange him for someone less irritating?” I asked half-joking and a little hopeful.

“I asked already. No.” Franky grumbled unhappily. “I’m just as angry with this situation as you are but all we can do is keep an eye on him for now. If he does do something stupid in the future, which is highly likely, then we can send him back on the first flight to Italy.”

“Could we use a box instead? Might save on the postage,” I smirked.

Franky let out a small chuckle but I counted that as a win considering how he was normally an unbreakable ice cube.

I sighed as I pulled out my study materials from the day. The more I thought about it, the more I calmed down. If it meant finally getting away from this. Finally getting our baby safe and out of the Mafia, then maybe being uncomfortable now would be worth it.

Even if I doubted Darion was the right person to take on responsibilities. I’d only met him for two minutes and I already wanted to throw him into a river with cement shoes on his feet. Though I was pretty sure that was an old-timey thing.

Franky and I fell into a comfortable silence as I finished my studies from the day and he did whatever he did on his laptop. Every once and a while we heard a loud noise from upstairs or distantly in one of the halls, sometimes like glass breaking and sometimes like someone cursing loudly.

We both just ignored it.

Eventually, I finished and got tired enough that I wanted to take a nap upstairs. As I headed back to my room, I looked around every corner and checked every hallway just to make sure I wouldn’t run into Darion again before I slipped into my room.

I sighed, shedding my day clothes as I slipped into pajamas and curled up in bed. I laid a hand over my stomach, my back starting to ache from how long I’d been up and doing so much exercise. I wasn’t even that far along but I was feeling the weight increase in my stomach now.

I didn’t get to relax for long before the door opened and the lifeless spirit of my fiance trudged inside. Face gaunt and eye twitching, he slammed the door behind him, even locking it before shuffling over to the bed.

I sat up in bed, sending him a pitying look as his knees knocked up against the base of the bed and he fully just let himself fall face-first into the plush blankets. The bed trembled from his sudden weight and I honestly felt a little bad.

“He finally calmed down?”

Leo nodded quietly, face still shoved into the bed.

“I’m sorry, baby,” I cooed softly, wanting to comfort him as I brushed my hands through his hair gently. He turned his head to glance up at me with tired eyes.

“I don’t like him,” he muttered quietly.

“I know,” I couldn’t help but laugh at how sulky he was. I opened up my arms and Leo wasted no time as he crawled into them, laying his head on my chest as I hummed and brushed his hair back. He sighed, his body relaxing and I grinned.

It was rare to have quiet moments like this, ones where I got to comfort him and he didn’t put up such a fuss.

“Thank you for defending me earlier,” I pressed a kiss to his temple. “Though you know I prefer you not killing people in front of me.”

“He would deserve it.”

“Yeah but I appreciate your restraint anyway,” I laughed.

Leo glanced up at me, his eyes alight with life as he grabbed my hand and pressed a kiss to my ring. “I love you. So goddamn much. I’m thinking of planning a date night for us. You up for it?”

I melted with his hopeful look, smiling brightly as I leaned down to lay a kiss on his lips. I hovered over them, my hair falling like curtains around us.

“I’d be honored,” I whispered before taking his lips for myself.
