Street Hustler and His Policewoman Wife-Chapter 36: Never Again, Never Ever Again!
Chen Xiao put away his phone and quickly walked towards Lin Xi.
"There’s news about Dali, and it’s not good. I have to go see him now."
Lin Xi’s expression also changed slightly, "Then you better go, but be careful." 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"Okay."
Chen Xiao replied, turned to leave, but Liang Yan called out, "Wait Chen Xiao, you might need to come with us to the criminal police as this case was reported by you."
"Sister Liang, please allow me some leeway. I have something urgent now. I’ll go to the criminal police team myself after I’ve handled it."
Liang Yan hesitated for a moment but finally nodded, "Alright, I’ll explain to Brother Xian for you."
"Thanks, Sister Liang!"
Chen Xiao didn’t waste any more time, went downstairs, mounted his motorcycle, and rushed to the hospital as fast as he could.
Upon arrival, Chen Xiao immediately saw Xiaoji crouched in the corridor.
"Xiaoji, how is Dali now?" Chen Xiao asked.
Hearing Chen Xiao’s voice, Xiaoji immediately stood up, "He’s still unconscious. I’m not sure exactly what happened, but I saw him at his doorstep when a van dumped him there. I went to check and found Brother Dali inside a burlap sack, covered in injuries."
"He was beaten? Did you see who was in the van?"
Chen Xiao asked with a frown. Xiaoji shook his head, "I couldn’t see clearly, but Dao said it must be Qiao Ye and his people. Dao is sharpening his knife now, planning to deal with Qiao Ye’s group."
"Sharpening the knife before figuring things out, isn’t that just digging his own grave?" Chen Xiao said, then called Dao.
"Dao, finish sharpening your knife and wait for me at home. We’ll avenge Dali together."
Chen Xiao didn’t scold Dao, nor did he try to advise him to calm down.
As a streetwise guy himself, he knew well the state Dao would be in when furious. Any opposition or advice might backfire.
After finishing the call, Chen Xiao walked into the ward.
Inside, Luo Dali’s parents were present.
His mother was gently wiping the blood off Luo Dali’s face with warm water from a small basin.
His father sat next to him with his head bowed, deep in thought. Just as Chen Xiao was about to call out, a tear fell from Luo Sifu’s eye.
Taking a deep breath, Chen Xiao gently called, "Uncle Luo, Auntie."
Luo Dali’s parents looked up immediately, with Luo Sifu hurriedly wiping away his tears, nodding slightly at Chen Xiao, "You’re here."
"Yes, I rushed over as soon as I heard the news. How is Dali now?"
"The doctor said he’s seriously injured but at least out of life-threatening danger."
"Did you contact the police?" Chen Xiao asked another question.
"People from the Phoenix Street Police Station came and told us to wait for news."
Chen Xiao wasn’t surprised by Luo Sifu’s words, but "waiting for news" might really just mean waiting for news.
It’s not that the police station was intentionally indifferent, but without Dali waking up, they would also struggle to identify the culprits.
Unless there is a witness!
Chen Xiao didn’t press the question further and instead examined Luo Dali’s injuries closely.
As he watched, Luo Dali’s mother wiped away a tear and said, "The doctor told me that Dali was probably hit on the head from behind with a blunt object, knocking him out before being kidnapped. The kidnappers were ruthless but avoided vital spots. In short, they didn’t want Dali’s life but left him in agony."
"Yes, don’t worry, Auntie. When we find those people, I’ll make sure they pay the price."
Chen Xiao spoke earnestly, but the next second, Luo Sifu looked at him and said in a deep voice:
"Come outside with me."
Chen Xiao could clearly sense the anger in Luo Sifu’s tone.
Surprised, Chen Xiao followed behind Luo Sifu.
Once outside, Luo Sifu, with a stern face, asked, "What price do you want those people to pay?"
Chen Xiao replied, "As Dali’s best buddy, I can’t let them off. I want to catch those people and cripple them all. But Uncle Luo, I’m sorry, I can’t do that."
With Luo Sifu’s face initially stern, he suddenly looked surprised, "This doesn’t sound like you."
"Uncle Luo, I do want to act impulsively and retaliate against those people the same way. But do you think that would really soothe us? They beat Dali like this; could we just settle it by giving them a thrashing back? No, they’d heal and forget. I want to make them suffer for a lifetime using another method!"
"What method?" Luo Sifu asked, and Chen Xiao leaned in, lowering his voice to quietly share his plan.
After listening, Luo Sifu said, amazed, "Chen Xiao, you’ve really changed. The old you wouldn’t have been so rational or planned things. When you said you wanted them to pay, I actually wanted to punch you, thinking you would act recklessly and bring yourself down in a blind quest for revenge!"
"Uncle, it won’t be like that anymore, never again!"
Chen Xiao spoke solemnly, fully understanding Luo Sifu’s concerns.
The old Chen Xiao rarely thought things through and always acted rashly without a plan.
Those actions might seem loyal and righteous but were actually foolish.
When someone uses vile and ruthless means to hurt you, fighting back the same way might provide temporary satisfaction and release.
But have you considered whether you can handle the consequences afterwards?
Even now, in 2006, society is still a society of law and order.
Like the saying, when a dog bites you, if you bite back, the dog certainly hurts, but in the end, you’re the one who gets dirty.
If a perpetrator ends up as a victim, what a tragedy for the original victim.
Luo Sifu heavily patted Chen Xiao on the shoulder, saying, "You must mature. Otherwise, I really can’t rest easy with you two hanging out together. But hearing what you just said, I feel assured."
Chen Xiao slightly smiled, and just then, Mother Luo’s voice called from the room, "Old Luo, Dali’s awake!"
Upon hearing this, both Chen Xiao and Luo Sifu were filled with joy.
Upon entering the room, they saw Luo Dali with his eyes open, looking weak.
But after speaking a few words with his parents, Luo Dali insisted on having them leave the room first.
Once the two elders closed the door, Luo Dali finally said, "Brother Chen, it was Qiao Ye’s group. Because Jiang Bo and Lighter are still in detention, Qiao Ye’s men are starting to complain. To give his brothers an explanation, Qiao Ye had people lurking around your place after dark."
Upon hearing this, Chen Xiao frowned, "You mean, they originally intended to target me?"
"Yes! Tonight, after having a few drinks with my old man, I planned to find you for more fun. But once I arrived at the base of your building, I noticed a few suspicious guys nearby. I tried to grab them for answers but ended up getting knocked out from behind with a brick."
"Since they were after me, why did they treat you this way?"
Luo Dali shook his head, saying weakly, "I don’t know, I’m so tired... Brother Chen, I’m resting now."
Chen Xiao didn’t disturb Luo Dali any further, nodded, and walked out of the ward.
After leaving the ward, Chen Xiao immediately exited the hospital.
Xiaoji followed, with a slightly worried look, saying, "Brother Chen, are we going to settle the score with Qiao Ye’s group now?"
Seeing the look in his eyes, Chen Xiao asked, "What, are you scared?"
"It’s not that I’m scared, I’m worried. I just have a feeling Brother Dali’s beating is a setup," Xiaoji replied earnestly.
Chen Xiao looked at him in surprise, then smiled, "Relax, we’ll get our revenge, but we must also use our brains. Let’s find Dao and plan more carefully first."
Xiaoji felt reassured and nodded repeatedly. Just as the two turned to get on the motorcycle, they heard a siren in the distance.
Looking toward the sound, Chen Xiao saw Zhang Xian toss away his cigarette and step out of a car.
Chen Xiao immediately frowned, thinking to himself, "Why did he follow us?"
