Chapter 71: The cheater

Adrian Blackwood

Adrian was in the middle of a business lunch then his eyes stopped towards the private area he narrowed his eyes looked towards the man.

Across the restaurant, he saw Ryan.

He was seated with another woman, leaning slightly toward her, speaking in a tone far too soft to be casual. The body language was unmistakable.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

His investigation had confirmed it — Ryan had married Elaine six years ago. The documents were clear. They were husband and wife. But something about it had never made sense.

He knew them. They had been close friends in college, yes — but lovers? No. There had never been that kind of spark. He knew about Elaine past that she loved Alex but Ryan there was never a question.

So why marry?

A darker thought formed in his mind.

Had Elaine made a mistake? Had she been hurt... vulnerable... and turned to Ryan? Was there a child involved? Was that why they married?

The questions burned.

Yet what he saw in front of him now made his blood boil.

Ryan was laughing softly. The woman across from him looked at him shyly — there was intimacy.

Like a lover.

Anger surged through Adrian.

How dare he?

Elaine didn’t deserve that.

Without another word, Adrian stood from his table. "Excuse me, gentlemen," he said coolly to his clients. "I’ll be right back."

The private dining area had been reserved under his name. It was nearly empty — quiet enough that no one would interfere.

He walked straight toward Ryan without another word his fist connected with Ryan’s jaw.

Ryan pov

"How dare you?" the man in front of Ryan demanded, fury evident in his eyes.

Ryan steadied himself, wiping the blood from the corner of his mouth. When he looked up fully at his attacker, shock replaced the irritation on his face.

"Adrian?"

Myra’s eyes widened in confusion. She turned to look at the man properly now — tall, commanding, unmistakably powerful.

Adrian Blackwood.

The heir of the Blackwood empire.

The same man who had dominated headlines all week.

Her mind raced.

He knows Ryan?

But the more pressing question burned louder in her thoughts.

Why did he punch him?

Adrian’s jaw was tight, his gaze dark as it shifted briefly to Myra — then back to Ryan.

"You really have no shame," Adrian said coldly.

Ryan frowned, confusion settling in. "What are you talking about?"

Adrian’s voice cut through the restaurant like a blade.

"You’re Elaine’s husband," he said, barely containing his anger. "And you’re cheating on her? How dare you?"

The words stunned both Ryan and Myra.

Ryan blinked. "What?"

Adrian let out a humorless laugh. "I knew you were a flirt back in college," he said coldly. "But I never thought you’d stoop this low. Cheating on Elaine? How could you do that to her?"

Ryan flinched at the accusation. "Adrian, can we talk somewhere private?"

He reached out, placing a hand on Adrian’s shoulder, but Adrian shrugged it off sharply.

"Don’t touch me."

"You don’t know the whole truth," Ryan said firmly. "And I promised Elaine I wouldn’t tell you. But you need to understand something — we were never husband and wife in the way you think."

Adrian’s anger flickered, uncertainty creeping in. "What does that even mean?"

Ryan hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "It means what you believe isn’t the full picture. I don’t have the right to explain it. That’s something Elaine has to do."

Adrian’s eyes softened despite himself. "Explain what?"

Ryan shook his head. "I can’t. Just know this — it’s not what it looks like. And if you care about her... you should hear the truth from her directly."

For the first time, Adrian wasn’t angry.

He was unsettled

Ryan watched Adrian turn as if to leave.

"Wait," Ryan called out suddenly. Then, with exaggerated innocence, he added, "Can I at least get a hug?"

Adrian stared at him. "Shut up." 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

But Ryan stepped closer anyway, giving him an almost puppy-like look. "We meet after so many years and this is it? You punch me and walk away? I don’t even know anything about you anymore."

Adrian exhaled sharply, clearly annoyed — yet he didn’t walk off.

"I’m still your friend, aren’t I?" Ryan continued. "Or did becoming the mighty heir erase that too? Fine. If you’re leaving, at least give me your number. I want to talk properly."

Adrian hesitated... then reluctantly recited his number.

"Don’t call me every day," he warned.

Ryan scoffed. "Please. I’m a busy man. I won’t be chasing you around."

Adrian rolled his eyes — but despite himself, he stepped forward and pulled Ryan into a brief, rough hug.

"I’m leaving," Adrian muttered. "And I want answers."

Ryan’s teasing expression faded slightly.

"Then ask the right person," he replied quietly.

Adrian didn’t respond.

But this time, when he walked away, it wasn’t anger driving him.

It was determination.
