Chapter 84: Stop Her At All Costs

[Next Day]

"So, Emmerich was adopted later?" Callum asked, his gaze fixed on Rivana as they sat in the car.

"Hmm," Rivana nodded, her fingers toying with the hem of her shirt. Azrael had left early in the morning to deal with urgent matters and entrusted Callum to accompany her. There was no better man to protect her if things went sideways.

Callum hadn’t had enough time to rest, let alone dive into Emmerich’s family history. He needed all the information he could gather for their ongoing investigation, especially regarding the photograph Rivana had handed to Azrael. It might be the missing piece that pointed them toward the truth.

"My grandparents, Margaret Faye, and Fredrick Faye, couldn’t conceive a child during their first ten years of marriage," Rivana began, her tone steady but distant. "Grandfather ended up taking a mistress, Mallory—the same woman who caused the ruckus at Emmerich’s funeral."

Callum nodded, vividly recalling the dramatic scene. Rivana continued, "Mallory gave birth to Emmerich, so they brought him into the household. But Mallory constantly antagonized Grandma Margaret, which eventually pushed Grandpa to kick her out. He kept Emmerich, though, and Grandma raised him as her own. Over time, even Emmerich started loving her and hated his real mother, Mallory."

"So, Emmerich isn’t legally their child?" Callum questioned, wondering if the Fayes had ever formally registered him under their name.

"I don’t know." Rivana shook her head. "No one ever talks about it. And more importantly, they’ve always avoided mentioning how my mother, Amerie, ended up in the household. These tests should uncover the truth."

"We’ll make sure of it," Callum reassured her firmly. His eyes fell on an old family photograph Rivana had shared earlier. He analyzed it, piecing together the timeline. Certain events had occurred just a few years before Margaret Faye’s death—events that everyone in the family had worked hard to bury. Margaret had passed before Rivana turned six, leaving no fond memories or clues to help unravel the secrets.

"We’re here, Ma’am," the chauffeur announced as the car rolled to a stop in front of the Faye Mansion.

Callum stepped out first, scanning the surroundings before opening the door for Rivana. Once she was out, he walked over to the team that had arrived earlier with the city’s top laboratory professionals, briefing them on the plan.

Just then, a familiar car pulled up, and Callum’s expression shifted into one of pure horror. Rivana, however, smiled as Leonora stepped out. Her cheerful greeting turned sour when her eyes fell on Callum.

"Why the heck is he here?" Leonora groaned as she walked up to Rivana.

"To help out with the tests. Why?" Rivana frowned, noting her friend’s flustered demeanor. Leonora wasn’t angry—it was more like guilt was written all over her face. Squinting at her, Rivana asked, "Did you do something?"

"No!" Leonora shrieked almost instantly, the pitch of her voice giving her away.

Rivana shook her head, exasperated. Leonora could never stay out of trouble. "You’ll tell me everything later," she declared, leaving no room for argument before heading inside the mansion.

Leonora ran a hand through her hair, fighting the urge to scream. Feeling Callum’s gaze burning into her back, she quickly followed after Rivana, hoping to avoid any more awkward interactions.

Inside, the commotion began. Members of the household stepped out of their rooms, their faces tense as Rivana arrived. Butler Chase greeted her with a formal smile, which faltered as his eyes landed on the laboratory team.

Fortunately, Callum’s men had already escorted Mallory out of the mansion before Rivana’s arrival, sparing her the inevitable headache. Rivana’s gaze swept across the room and landed on Rafaelo. He looked paler than usual, as though the life had been drained out of him. Today, he had no choice but to help them uncover the truth.

"We’ll be getting everyone’s DNA tested today. Please cooperate," Callum announced, his sharp eyes scanning the room. His voice lowered dangerously as he added, "If you don’t, my team will still get it done—but we’ll try to go easy on you."

"What are you trying to prove, Rivana?" Amerie snapped, her voice sharp. "I know you hate me, and it’s fine if you don’t want to consider me your mother. But there’s no need for all this."

Rivana didn’t respond, her gaze fixed on Rafaelo. "I need your sister’s and your mom’s samples," she said firmly.

"I’m not getting into this," Giana retorted, scoffing at Rivana’s demand. Power had clearly gone to her head, Giana thought, turning her into a spoiled brat. But little did she know, it was her own son’s mistakes that had given Rivana this newfound confidence.

Rafaelo gritted his teeth, holding back curses as his frustration simmered. Clenching his fists, he finally snapped, "Do it, Mom."

"But—" Giana protested.

"You too, Ruby," Rafaelo added sharply, turning to Rubina.

"Brother..." Rubina’s voice trembled as she tried to object. But when he pressed her hand in silent insistence, she relented. She could never go against him; that’s just how they were. Rubina had always looked up to Rafaelo, cherishing him as both a protector and a confidant. She loved him deeply, no matter the circumstances.

"Good," Rivana said, her tone laced with satisfaction. She turned her attention to Amerie, who hadn’t moved from her spot.

"Why?" Rivana asked, her voice loud and challenging. "Are you scared we’ll find out who your real daughter is?" Her question hung in the air, heavy and daunting, as her gaze flicked to Rubina.

"What are you trying to say, sis?!" Rubina retorted, her usually calm voice laced with frustration. Her hands trembled slightly as her helper steadied her by the arm.

Rivana’s sharp gaze shifted to the blind woman. Beneath her composed facade, Rivana could see the fear—the subtle crack in her mask. It was as if Rubina knew something but was pretending not to. Rivana’s eyes then moved to Giana, who looked utterly indifferent. She huffed quietly, her annoyance clear, as though she couldn’t believe she was being ordered around like this. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

Lastly, Rivana turned her attention to Amerie. Her mother stood trembling, wiping beads of sweat from her forehead. Her anxiety was plain as day.

"The results will answer your question, little sister," Rivana replied coolly. Without waiting for a response, she turned to Callum and his team. They immediately got to work, moving with precision and focus.

The bouncers stepped forward, gesturing respectfully for Giana to sit. Though their posture remained professional, it was clear they wouldn’t hesitate to use force if necessary. Giana scowled at them but grudgingly complied, sinking into the sofa with a loud huff. The doctor approached her, donning a pair of gloves and swiftly drawing blood from her vein. Giana’s expression remained sour throughout, her irritation palpable.

Next, it was Rafaelo’s turn. He moved silently, following instructions without a word. Giana, however, noticed something odd about him. His unusual compliance set off alarm bells in her mind. She studied him carefully, her suspicion growing. A pang of worry hit her. Had her son done something reckless that could give Rivana the upper hand?

"You haven’t taken anything, right?" Callum questioned, a smirk playing on his lips as his eyes locked on Rafaelo.

Rafaelo gritted his teeth, his jaw tightening as he glared at Callum. He knew exactly what the man was insinuating, and it only fueled his anger. Giana squinted, her gaze narrowing as she tried to piece together what was going on.

Once the team collected Rafaelo’s blood and hair samples, it was Rubina’s turn. Her helper guided her to the sofa, ensuring she was comfortable. The doctor worked carefully, extracting her blood while Rubina winced in discomfort. The process was quick, and soon, Rubina’s samples were sealed and set aside.

Amerie, however, still hadn’t moved from her spot. One of the men stepped toward her, gesturing politely for her to sit. When she refused, standing defiantly in place, he grabbed her arm and gently but firmly led her to the sofa.

"Leave me!" Amerie grumbled, struggling to break free. She tried to rise, but the team held her in place while the doctor swiftly took her blood sample.

"This is not right!" Amerie shouted, glaring daggers at Rivana. "I’ll call the police!" she threatened, her voice trembling with anger. But no one flinched at her words; the room remained calm and resolute.

Once her samples were taken, the bouncers released her. Amerie huffed, sitting frozen in her spot, her glare never leaving Rivana. Meanwhile, Callum checked in with the team, ensuring everything was proceeding smoothly. Rivana stood nearby, discussing the procedure with the doctors.

Butler Chase looked around, ensuring that everyone was preoccupied. Quietly, he instructed the staff to look after the guests while he went to arrange for lunch. With a calm demeanor, he excused himself and headed toward the kitchen. As he reached the corridor, he glanced behind him to confirm that no one had noticed. Instead of entering the kitchen, he veered into a nearby corridor, his footsteps quick and deliberate. Slipping into the storeroom, he shut the door behind him and pulled out his phone. His fingers trembled slightly as he dialed a number marked only with a rose icon.

"She brought people and took samples for DNA tests," he murmured, his voice low and panicked. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead, and his grip tightened around the phone.

A sharp curse came from the other end before the woman spoke, her tone cold and commanding. "It’s your job to stop her. And you will do it at all costs, even if it means putting yourself on the deathbed."
