Chapter 62: Roselia

Rafaelo stared at Rivana’s shoe, his eyes turning red in frustration. His fists clenched so tightly that his nails dug into his palms. All it would take was one punch, one small blow to kill this bitch. He glared at Rivana, whose wicked smile fueled his fury.

"Please, brother..." Rubina begged him. Clinging onto him, she desperately cried, "It’s the only way to restore what was ours. We will be on the streets in no time." Tears stuck to her plump red cheeks; unlike everyone else, she was aware of their situation very well. She didn’t want to lose their high status and end up being stubbed under the category of riches to rags.

Rivana leaned back on the couch, enjoying the torment of emotions within the family. She had promised to bring them to this situation, but she never expected it to come this early. And also because of the man whom she thought would be her greatest hurdle to crumble to pieces.

"Yes, Rafaelo." Amerie joined in, taking a step forward. "Only you can save us now." She glanced at Gianna standing afar, her face burning with fury. Now that Rubina was humiliated, Amerie couldn’t sleep well until Rafaelo went through the same ordeal.

Rafaelo closed his eyes and sighed out loud. His family’s future was dependent on his shoulders. He couldn’t be the same high school boy whose ego was larger than their reputation. Once he had gotten back what should have been his from the start, he would always teach this shameless, pathetic woman a lesson, he thought, convincing himself to agree.

Taking a deep breath, Rafaelo muttered, "Alright."

"Yay!" Rivana brimmed with excitement. Her voice echoed in the dead silent hall, daunting the Fayes. Everyone held their breaths, eyes all on the once proud prince of Fayes, now reluctantly leaning in front of his half-sister. Many maids couldn’t help but recall how he would corner the poor girl and torment her, making every day a hell for her. And now he was about to lick the same weak girl’s shoe. Karma was indeed a...

Rafaelo felt like he would die from the way his insides were boiling in anger. He clenched his fists on his knees, his eyes boring into Rivana haughtily smirking at him. He gritted his teeth and leaned down, making everyone hold their breaths.

"No!" Gianna screamed at the top of her lungs. She stormed toward him and grabbed her son by his collar, stopping him just before his face could touch Rivana’s shoe. She yanked him back, forcing him to stand up.

She glared at his stupidity before staring at Rivana. "Power is all exhilarating until you are pressed down under it. So enjoy while it’s sweet," she mocked and dragged her son away.

Rivana clicked her tongue as the duo walked upstairs to their room. With a sad smile, she looked at Rubina and shrugged, "Your mom seems to love your brother more," she mocked, making Rubina grit her teeth and turn around to leave. Tessa quickly helped her back to the room, guiding her up the stairs.

Rivana watched them leave, her eyes following until they crossed the corridor and then slipped into the room. She put on this exhilarating play mainly to find clues linked to the truths that had gotten deeply buried along with Emmerich.

Gianna had always been more loving toward Rafaelo. Though she cared for Rubina equally, there was something that never connected them strongly, unlike Amerie, who would always show up whenever her sweet sister was in trouble.

No mother would stay silent and watch her daughter lick someone else’s shoe, no matter how much resentment they had against them. And the way Gianna reacted earlier, quite contrastingly toward Rafaelo and Rubina, one thing was clear: she didn’t care whatever happened to Rubina.

The puzzle pieces weren’t fitting together, and Rivana’s mind raced with thoughts. Amerie’s words snapped her back to reality.

"I really hate giving birth to a cunning snake like you," Amerie spat before storming upstairs. Mallory scowled and walked away too, having spit enough on the face.

Mathew heaved a sigh now that the drama was finally over. He looked at Rivana and grumbled, "If you need anything, just come to the company. I won’t ever be coming here again."

Rivana smiled at his comment. They were all frustrating her, so she decided to play a little with them.

"Oh, come on. You enjoyed it," one of their juniors commented, earning a scorn from Mathew. "I clearly heard you snicker when Rafaelo knelt on the ground. Just accept you hate him just as much as we all do."

"Oh, that’s some new tea." Leonora beamed in curiosity. Placing down the glass, she asked, "Tell me more."

The young assistant leaned forward and replied, "He always bullies managers and even HRs whenever he visits the company. Many were ready to resign if he was declared as the new CEO, but fortunately, Mr. Faye took the right decision."

The other two beside him agreed. As the attorney department, they faced more trouble because of Rafaelo. He would always end up stirring trouble, and they had to clear it. They glanced at their head, Mathew, sitting on the other side, seemed to agree with it.

"Alright. Let’s get back to work," Rivana said in a determined tone. There were many legal decisions, and they needed to get over things quickly. She decided to check with each department each day. Since Mathew was a little close and didn’t seem to mind helping her, she had called him over.

"Let’s shift to the study room," she suggested, not wanting any disturbance. They all agreed and walked to the study room.

For the next few hours, Rivana looked through the half-finished files, mainly through the issues that needed the most attention. Mathew was patient and cleared all her doubts.

"It’s worse than I had prepared for," Rivana commented with a smile. Handling Shadow, which was a tech company, and Faye Groups, which was larger and involved in many industries like real estate, financing, and construction, was a daunting task.

Rivana rubbed her neck in exhumation and everyone smiled at her. Instead of enjoying the powers, she was here sitting and seriously trying to understand the nicks and pecks of their business, and that was already enough evidence for them to put their faith in her.

"Alright. Lunchtime!" Lenora walked in, carrying a few paper bags. She was bored midway through the meeting and had escaped, knowing Rivana would be fine alone.

Mathew and his team thanked her and stuffed the sandwiches. They continued to discuss things until it was close to 6 PM.

"Let’s continue tomorrow," Mathew suggested, and when Rivana looked at him, he showed her the watch. With a smile, he leaned closer and added, "The right way to get into your workers’ hearts is by leaving them right on time."

Rivana looked at the three people sitting opposite them, their eyes kept glancing at their wrists. With a smile, she nodded, and everyone quickly packed up and left.

"My baby suffered a lot today," Leonora said, sitting beside Rivana and pulling her into a hug. Rivana sighed heavily and hugged her back as she patted her head.

"Call your husband and ask him to come quickly," Leonora teased her. "He will have better ways to comfort you."

Rivana muttered a curse and moved away. "Get lost," she chided, her cheeks warming up at Leonora’s giggle.

Leonora’s phone rang just then, and it was her assistant Lily. "Ah, she is at it again," she grumbled, excusing herself to take the call. Lily was adamant about making her agree to the new offer they had been offered, but she refused. It had been long since she had taken a holiday, and she didn’t want anyone to spoil it.

Rivana turned toward the black lavish chair in front of the study table, recalling the times Emmerich would spend here, buried in work and books in his leisure. She walked over to the study and decided to arrange the books back on his classic shelf. The maids had left many on the floor, and she couldn’t bear to see them there. She also reminded herself to warn the butler to clean this room daily, just like how Emmerich always wanted it to be—tidy and shining.

Rivana sighed and forced herself to stand up. Walking toward the book pile, she picked a few and placed them in the rows. Emmerich had a weird love for books that none of their children, sadly, picked up—not even her. Many were ancient literature and mythological books, some fiction and some fairy tales that made her smile. That old man had an intriguing taste.

One of the books caught her attention. It had a hardcover that was almost worn out as if it had been read many times. The title was "Whispers of Love." She opened it and flipped through it, ending the author’s introduction page.

Roselia.

There was no surname. She continued flipping through the pages, and since the book was heavy, she held it correctly. Something slipped out of the pages. Rivana frowned in confusion. Closing the book, she leaned down and picked up the picture.

It was a black-and-white picture, but the people in it surprised her even more.

Emmerich was standing beside a petite-looking woman and her grandmother, Margaret Faye was standing on the other side. They both were looking lovingly at the child the petite woman was carrying in her arms. It seemed like a fond memory considering how her father treasured it.

Something hit Rivana, and she flipped the book open again, reaching the author’s page. There was a small picture of the author, and it was the same petite woman in the picture.

Who was this Roselia? Rivana wondered, her eyes fixing on the child in the picture.
