Chapter 40: Invitation and beg

"What happened here?" Ethan asked, his brows raised in pure shock as he stared at the collapsing building.

Amanda shook her head and immediately called the headquarters for backup. The sensors had reported this as a low-ranking rift, but the destruction before them clearly suggested something else.

"Did you see anyone around?" Ethan asked as Amanda typed the message.

She shook her head. "No."

Ethan frowned. "Then we should search the place. Whoever caused this... it was a Nightwalker. I felt that presence. And I’m sure you did too."

Amanda paused briefly before replying, "Let the backup team handle it, Ethan. No need to stick your nose everywhere."

The blond young man’s eyes turned cold. "What kind of way is that to talk to me? And why have you come here all alone? Have you forgotten we work as a team?"

"For a mere site inspection you wanted me to drag the whole base with me?"

Ethan scoffed. "Yeah, right. This was just a simple rift inspection." He gestured toward the wreck behind her.

It was a basic lesson they had learned very early in their days as Nightwalkers: never take any rift casually, or it might be your last. Unless you had reached the special rank, every rift had to be treated as an anomaly, and backup was mandatory.

Ethan stepped closer and asked, "And by the way, was it really for a site inspection that you came to Fortis? Or is there another intention you want to tell me about?"

Amanda growled, "Who the fuck are you that I need to report everything to?"

"As your team leader, I’m responsible for your whereabouts, Amanda. And if I am not wrong you were wandering around searching for that bastard—"

Ethan tilted his head as a projectile rushed past it. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Immediately after, he had to take a cautious step back as another dagger shot toward his face.

He raised his hand and blocked the third attack aimed at his head.

Amanda followed with another dagger, stopping it right before his left eye.

Her entire presence had shifted. Genesis rolled around her arms like a second skin. Her eyes held no emotion other than anger.

"Ethan Lockhart, must I warn you again and again not to speak ill of someone who has nothing to do with you?"

Ethan met her gaze with the same intensity. His Genesis burned fiercer than hers, yet he didn’t push forward. Unblinking, he replied, "If he’s going to cost me a precious team member, then yes, I will definitely feel frustrated by his existence."

Amanda glowered. "Then keep that frustration to yourself. If I hear another curse directed at Kyle, I swear to God, it will be either you or me."

She then stepped back and slid the knives into her waist belt.

Just as she was about to leave, Ethan called out, "Amanda, wait. Will you come with me to the family dinner in two days?"

Amanda didn’t even bother to respond.

Ethan quickly added, "It’s important for our families. Our mothers want to see us getting along. Not as anything else, but please consider my request as a benefactor who once saved you."

Amanda finally paused.

Ethan felt relieved. It worked. He hadn’t expected that he would have to stoop this low just to invite her to dinner, but considering how he had lost his temper earlier and the direction their conversation had taken, this had been his only option.

However, things did not go the way he hoped.

Amanda glanced over her shoulder. Her eyes glared at him as she said, "If you really think I would walk alongside you anywhere after what you just did, then Ethan, you might not know anything about me."

She turned back and continued walking.

Ethan gnashed his teeth after failing to invite a girl to a simple dinner.

There were hundreds of girls out there ready to lick his feet. And this bitch... just because he had shown her some attention, she thought she could get ahead of herself.

’All for that seaweed, huh? I will make you regret choosing him over me.’

Suddenly, Ethan found himself with a very interesting reason to look forward to the upcoming trip.

....

[Present time]

Kyle froze the moment he heard the voice. There was no mistake. That voice belonged to the same girl he had just been thinking about.

He glanced at Veronica and found her staring back at him in confusion.

He quickly pointed a finger at himself and then crossed his arms, silently saying, ’My ex.’

Veronica frowned. She had suspected it might be Amanda, but to think she would come here and knock on his door after their breakup?

"Kyle?" she called out.

"Um... what are you doing here?" he asked, turning his attention back to Amanda.

"I... just wanted to see you once. I know you told me never to approach you again, but I had a really bad feeling. So please, I beg you, Kyle... just this one time, let me see you."

Veronica frowned at those words.

She got the notification a few minutes before the news of the destruction Kyle caused that Amanda was going over for site inspection.

She even wanted to warn Kyle, but he didn’t pick up his call.

Could it be that...Amanda saw him and merely came to check whether she saw things right? This was bad.

Kyle looked down at himself. His body was covered in injuries, which only added another reason not to open the door.

The first reason, of course, was that they had already broken up, and Kyle hadn’t forgotten a single thing that had happened over the past six months.

Taking a deep breath, he said, "Go away, Amanda. We’re over now. Don’t make this harder for me. Trust me, seeing you only bothers me now."

He never imagined he would say something like this to the girl he had loved the most. But whenever he thought about how everything had changed... her betrayal, and how she still acted as if she had done nothing wrong... the flames of hatred reignited in his chest.

"I-I know... I know what I did is unforgivable, and even seeing my face upsets you, Kyle. I really wouldn’t have come here if it weren’t for this heavy feeling in my chest. I swear to God... just this one time. Just this last time... I won’t approach you again. I promise on my life."

Kyle sighed and looked back at Veronica.

Her brows were drawn closer and she appeared clearly displeased.

Fuck...what kind of situation he got stuck in?
