Amanda was hopeless.

She had actually taken this mission of a random site inspection simply because it was located in Fortis.

She knew Kyle would come to see his brother, so she held on to that thin strand of hope that they might run into each other at some point.

The population of Fortis was above a million, and she was hoping for something like that to happen. Yes, she was being hopeless.

For a moment, she thought about visiting the hospital. If she came across Kyle, she could lie and say she had a relative admitted there. But then she heard from Hannah that Blake had been moved to the main house for obvious reasons.

His recovery was beyond possible, so keeping him in an unfamiliar environment would only add to the Astortia patriarch’s stress.

Now, Amanda couldn’t possibly go and visit Kyle’s home, could she?

So she was currently on her way to fulfill the job she had taken as a cover.

As she moved closer to the building, she felt her phone buzzing again.

She clicked her tongue as she took it out and saw that it was from Ethan. Once again.

’What’s his problem?’ He had been pestering her a lot these days, especially after she broke up with Kyle.

Has he lost his mind? Does he want to hear something directly from her before he finally stops?

Reading the message that said he was coming over to inspect the site with her, Amanda knew she had to draw the line or leave the team for good.

She decided to rush to the site, finish her duty as quickly as possible, and somehow avoid meeting that freak.

In the past, she had respected Ethan when things were normal. He was a strong warrior, someone who has gone through experiences which could emotionally break anyone.

But for the last six months, he had started keeping her increasingly occupied with work. The Commander was always on his side as well.

She was constantly forced to stay away from Kyle because of such assignments, work that even a trainee could have handled. And as a result, Kyle lost his temper and now...

’If only we could go back to how things were...’ Her eyes grew hot as she remembered a time when life had been beautiful because of a single person.

Shaking her head, she hurried past the crowd and entered the outskirts of Fortis.

The building she approached had been abandoned a week ago because of the deaths occurring around the site. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

Naturally, the Paranormal Suppression Corps had noticed the anomalous situation, and given the isolated location, they did not even need a sensor to know that a rift had appeared there.

However, due to a shortage of staff, the area had only been blocked off by the CPB (Civil Protection Bureau), and no Nightwalker had come to inspect the site.

Until now.

Amanda crossed the last alley and reached the location marked on the map.

She stuffed her phone back into her pocket, ready to locate the rift using her senses. But then her whole body seized.

"W-What..." Her irises shrank, her heart slammed against her chest, and her mind went blank for a moment.

A heavy, oceanic wave of Genesis erupted from inside.

A form of energy she herself possessed, a sign of life... However, the sheer intensity of it nearly forced her to her knees.

A moment of deathly calmness.

And then,

BOOOOOOM

An explosion erupted, not of flames but of pure Genesis. The entire western edge of the building burst apart.

Amanda could only stare in horror as the four-storey structure began to collapse. Pillar after pillar, beam after beam gave way. Dust and debris surged upward like a rising cloud, and the thunderous roar of the collapse filled the air.

There was nothing she could do except watch the destruction unfold.

Her eyes searched the chaos for anyone. Maybe a Nightwalker had arrived just in time and a battle had led to this outcome. But no matter how much she thought about it, she could not recall any Nightwalker capable of releasing such a condensed presence.

Her gaze suddenly caught a figure emerging from the ruined building.

The person wore a dark hood and limped on his left leg.

The figure turned and looked at her.

For a brief moment, their eyes met, and Amanda froze where she stood.

"Amanda!" a voice called from behind, making her instinctively turn.

Ethan was rushing toward her in panic.

She immediately snapped her head back toward the limping figure, only to find that no one was there.

Confusion and disbelief crossed her face as she muttered, ’It couldn’t be... could it?’

"Ah... haah... haa..." Kyle sat beside a garbage bin, his back pressed against the wall as he clutched his injured left arm.

Things had gone out of control back there.

He could not even remember exactly what had happened.

The moment he wished for his Soul Points to be used to obtain Ethara’s reward, everything changed.

The ghoul had actually tried to escape back into the Rift as the battlefield shifted into something completely different.

The armament in his hand carried a presence so overwhelming that it left Kyle staggering.

He did not even need the system’s guidance to use it. The action came naturally.

[Host, your knee and shoulder are bleeding. You need to see a medic soon.]

Kyle chuckled. "Did you see that? The destruction I caused?"

[...the system witnessed it, host. The host used one of the most potent projectiles to take down just a ghoul.]

Kyle let out another chuckle. "That ’just ghoul’ was about to rip me into shreds. I did what my instincts told me."

The system did not argue with him.

Kyle exhaled slowly and folded his uninjured leg, resting his arm on his knee.

It was intoxicating to wield such power and completely overwhelm the battlefield. Yes, it had taken a lot out of him, but in the end, he stood victorious.

Kyle grinned. "Now that’s something I wouldn’t mind staring at for hours."
