Chapter 18: [18] The Vampire Knight

The stairway ended in a cavernous chamber that smelled of dry earth and old bone.

They stepped into the Grand Ossuary.

It was a nightmare of architecture. The walls were lined floor-to-ceiling with skulls, thousands of them, stacked in intricate patterns. The floor was a mosaic of femurs and ribs, cracking softly under their boots. In the center of the room, a massive pillar constructed entirely of fused spines spiraled up into the darkness above.

"Cozy," Jinx whispered, her drone hovering nervously over her shoulder.

"Spread out," Justinordered, his voice tight. "Eyes on the shadows. Something feels... heavy."

Leon stood near the back. His [Eyes of the Night] picked up heavy trails of dark mana swirling around the central pillar. It was thick, like smoke, pulsing with a rhythm.

"He’s here," Leon said.

A slow, rhythmic clapping echoed through the chamber.

Clap... clap... clap.

From behind the pillar of spines, a figure emerged.

He was a giant. At least seven feet tall, clad in armor that seemed to be grown from black iron and bone. It was jagged, spiked, and pulsating with a faint red light. He wore no helmet. His face was pale, almost translucent, with sharp features and long white hair.

But his eyes were the worst part. They were solid crimson orbs, devoid of pupils, burning with an ancient, cruel intelligence.

In his hand, he dragged a massive greatsword. The blade was six feet long, serrated, and glowing with runes.

[ THREAT: EXTREME ]

"Guests," the Knight purred. His voice was deep, resonating in their chests. "Lord Kain said the rats might make it past the thralls. Though I expected... more."

He looked at Rhino with disdain. He glanced at Jinx with amusement.

Then his eyes locked onto Leon. The Knight paused. He tilted his head, sniffing the air. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

"Oh?" The Knight smiled, revealing serrated fangs. "What is this? A little shadow dressed in human skin? You smell... unique."

"Rhino, engage!" Justinbarked. "Jinx, trap field! Leon, flank!"

The squad exploded into motion.

Rhino roared, his skin turning a jagged, rocky grey.

[ ABILITY: RHINO-HIDE ]

[ DESCRIPTION: Hardens the user’s skin to the density of granite, increasing defense by 300%. ]

He charged like a battering ram, shotgun leveled. BOOM! BOOM!

Two slugs, capable of stopping a truck, slammed into the Knight.

The vampire didn’t even flinch. A red barrier of hardened blood flickered into existence an inch from his chest, absorbing the impact.

"Rude," the Knight murmured.

He moved.

It wasn’t movement; it was a blur. One second he was standing by the pillar, the next he was inside Rhino’s guard.

The greatsword swung in a blur of red light.

CRACK.

Rhino screamed. The massive blade smashed into his armored side. The rock-skin shattered like glass. Rhino—all three hundred pounds of him—was launched across the room. He slammed into a wall of skulls, burying himself in a cloud of bone dust.

"Rhino!" Jinx shrieked.

She threw her hands forward. [ ENERGY WIRE ].

Dozens of glowing blue filaments shot out, wrapping around the Knight’s limbs, trying to bind him.

The Knight laughed. He flexed his muscles, and the blood runes on his armor flared.

SNAP.

The wires broke like cobwebs.

"Is this the best the Federation has?" the Knight mocked, walking toward Kaelen. "Toys and brute force?"

Justinheld his ground, his face mask hiding his fear. He raised his hands.

[ ABILITY: SOUND VOID ]

[ DESCRIPTION: Creates a zone of absolute silence, removing the target’s ability to hear and disrupting equilibrium/balance. ]

A sphere of silence engulfed the Knight.

The Knight stumbled. For a fraction of a second, he looked confused, shaking his head as his inner ear failed him.

"Now, Leon!" Justinshouted, though inside the void, no sound existed.

Leon was already moving.

He had vanished into the shadows the moment Rhino charged. He emerged now from the darkness cast by the spine pillar, directly behind the Knight.

He leaped, his shadow-steel daggers aiming for the gaps in the neck armor.

But the Knight was fast. Unnaturally fast.

Even deafened, even disoriented, his instincts were razor-sharp. He sensed the movement in the air. He spun around, swinging his massive sword blindly in a horizontal arc.

It was a killing blow. If it connected, it would cut Leon in half.

Leon couldn’t stop his momentum. He was mid-air.

[ SHADOW GLIDE: ACTIVE ]

He didn’t dodge. He merged.

For a split second, Leon’s body lost its physical form. He turned into a wisp of black smoke. The greatsword passed harmlessly through his midsection, disturbing nothing but mist.

The Knight’s red eyes widened in shock.

Leon rematerialized instantly, landing on the vampire’s chest plate. He wrapped his legs around the Knight’s torso and drove both daggers down.

SHUNK.

The blades pierced the armor at the shoulder joint, sinking deep.

The Knight roared—a silent scream in the void. He dropped his sword and reached up, grabbing Leon by the throat with a hand like a hydraulic press.

Leon gagged. His vision swam. The strength of the vampire was overwhelming. He felt his windpipe starting to crush.

"Get... off... me..." the Knight’s voice broke through the silence as he channeled blood magic to shatter the Sound Void.

The sphere collapsed. Sound rushed back in—the crumbling of bones, Rhino’s groans, the Knight’s ragged breathing.

The Knight squeezed harder. He lifted Leon off his chest, preparing to slam him into the ground and crush his skull.

Leon kicked out, his boot connecting with the Knight’s knee, but it was like kicking a steel beam.

He’s too strong, Leon thought, panic rising. I can’t overpower him.

"Die, little shadow," the Knight hissed.

BANG.

A shot rang out.

Justinstood ten feet away, holding a heavy-caliber revolver. Smoke curled from the barrel.

The bullet was tipped with concentrated UV gel. It hit the Knight in the face, right in his left eye.

The vampire screamed, dropping Leon as his face sizzled and burned.

Leon hit the floor and rolled. He didn’t run away. He lunged forward.

He slashed the Knight’s hamstring.

The vampire buckled, falling to one knee.

"Jinx! Now!" Leon shouted.

Jinx, tears in her eyes, triggered her drone. It dive-bombed the Knight, exploding in a flash of electric blue light.

The Knight was stunned, blinded, and crippled.

Leon was behind him again.

He jumped onto the Knight’s back. He grabbed the vampire’s white hair, pulled his head back, and drove his dagger into the throat.

He didn’t stop. He sawed.

With a final, gurgling roar, the Knight slumped forward.

Dead.

Silence returned to the Ossuary, broken only by Rhino’s pained wheezing from the pile of bones.

Leon stood over the corpse, his chest heaving. His neck throbbed where he had been choked. He looked down at the fallen elite.

A thick, oily shadow was pooling beneath the Knight. It wasn’t fading like normal monster remains. It was waiting.

[ SYSTEM ALERT ]

[ HIGH-PURITY DARKLINE SHADOW DETECTED ]

[ TARGET: VAMPIRE KNIGHT ]

[ EXTRACTION CHANCE: 100% ]

[ EXTRACT? Y / N ]

Leon looked at Kaelen. Justinwas helping Rhino up. The veteran looked at Leon, saw the shadow pooling, and gave a slow nod. He turned his back, pretending to check Rhino’s wounds.

Leon turned back to the corpse. He extended his hand.

"Extract."

The shadow tore free from the body. It swirled around Leon’s arm, cold and powerful, rushing into his core.

Leon gasped, staggering back.

The world shifted.

Suddenly, Leon wasn’t just seeing the dark room. He could feel it.

He felt the heavy, slow thud of Rhino’s heart, struggling against the pain. He felt the frantic, bird-like flutter of Jinx’s pulse. He felt Kaelen’s steady, controlled rhythm.

And deeper... far below them... he felt a massive, ancient ocean of blood.

Kain.

"Leon?" Jinx called out. "You okay? You’re zoning out."

Leon blinked, the red haze of his new sense fading slightly into the background.

"I’m fine," Leon said. His voice was steady, but his mind was racing. He wants me alive. He wants the vessel.

He looked at his team. Rhino was bleeding. Jinx was shaken. Justinwas grim.

"He’s dead," Leon said, kicking the Knight’s corpse. "We need to move. Rhino needs time to heal."

"Good work, kid," Rhino grunted, limping over. He looked at the dead elite. "You move like a ghost. I owe you a beer."

"Make it two," Jinx said, wiping her eyes.

Leon looked down into the dark tunnel that led deeper into the cathedral. His new [Blood Sense] throbbed, warning him of the dangers ahead.

"Let’s find a safe spot," Leon said. "We need to talk."
