Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Counting the Cost of Intent II

Arthur slowed as the corridor opened into a broken chamber.

The space was wide and uneven, the stone floor cracked and scarred. Bones were scattered everywhere. Some were fresh, still pale and sharp. Others were older, dulled by time until they blended into the dust.

He stayed close to the wall and focused on his breathing until it steadied.

Only then did he bring the system back up.

"Show me the logs."

The response came instantly.

Arthur blinked.

"Aligned intent," he said slowly. "So you noticed that too."

That fight had been clean. No panic. No scrambling. No wasted movement. He’d stayed in control from start to finish.

The system had seen it.

He scrolled again.

Arthur let out a slow breath.

"Twelve," he said. "that’s how it stacks."

He leaned his back against the wall and crossed his arms, thinking.

The base points were fixed. That much was obvious. Rank mattered most. Kill something stronger, earn more. It was simple.

The modifiers were where it got complicated.

They weren’t tied to what he killed, but how he did it.

Decisive kills. Near-death fights. Alignment between intent and action.

There was no reward for half measures.

"This thing doesn’t care how hard I try," he murmured. "It cares how committed I am."

That made it dangerous and powerful.

Arthur glanced back down the corridor he’d come from. Somewhere behind him, people were still running. Still screaming. Still hoping for miracles to save them.

He wasn’t.

Right now, he was testing something.

He straightened and pulled up his skill interface.

He read it carefully this time.

Not as a miracle.

As a result.

"This came from the moment I stopped begging," he said quietly. "When I accepted whatever happened next."

He tapped his temple once.

"So if I fight differently... you change what you give me."

The thought sent a small thrill through him.

Skills weren’t rewards.

They were reflections.

Arthur was about to close the interface when another message slid into place.

✦══════════════════════════════════════✦

He froze.

"...Already?" he muttered.

Ten intent points.

Almost everything he had.

Arthur let out a quiet laugh, half amused, half irritated.

"Of course, that’s the catch."

Intent Points were a resource. And a currency. Spend them badly and he’d cripple himself. Hoard them and he’d stall out.

There was no safe choice.

He studied the skill again, then looked around the chamber.

He was alive because of this ability. Because his mind hadn’t cracked when it mattered most.

"I don’t get to be greedy yet," he said.

He confirmed the upgrade.

The interface pulsed.

Another interface replaced it almost immediately.

✦══════════════════════════════════════✦

Arthur went still.

He flexed his hand. Rolled his shoulder. Took a slow step forward.

The difference was immediate.

Not dramatic. No rush of power. No surge.

Just... less waste.

His movements felt tighter. His balance steadier. Breathing came easier, smoother. Every action felt cleaner, like friction had been shaved away.

"This isn’t strength," he whispered. "It’s refinement."

And refinement mattered.

He smiled, sharp and satisfied.

"Worth it."

The loss of points no longer bothered him. If this was what ten intent points bought, then earning more wasn’t a chore.

It was an investment.

His resolve hardened.

Get more intent points, shape more skills, and upgrade them.

Arthur pushed off the wall and moved forward, posture relaxed but alert.

His goal for the next fight formed clearly.

Clinical. Precise. Efficient.

No wasted movement, and no hesitation.

When the next group of skeletons came into view, he didn’t rush. There were four this time, spread loosely across a cracked chamber.

Arthur rolled his neck once.

"Alright," he said calmly. "Let’s see what you notice this time."

He stepped in.

One skeleton turned, weapon scraping stone as it raised its sword. The others followed a moment later.

Arthur didn’t tense.

He moved.

The first strike came. He slipped inside it with a short, exact step. His dagger glanced off bone, not a kill, just enough to redirect.

He didn’t chase, as he repositioned.

The second skeleton lunged. Arthur ducked under the swing, as he felt the air pass over his head. He stepped through cleanly, and drove his dagger into its spine.

Crack.

As It collapsed.

Arthur didn’t even look back.

"Too slow," he muttered.

The remaining three activated their skill. Speed surged. Pressure spiked.

Arthur smiled.

"Good," he said. "Now we’re talking."

His body responded smoothly. No panic. No wasted motion. Sovereign’s Bearing kept his thoughts steady and sharp.

Steel rang against bone.

Clack. Scrape. Crack.

Arthur moved like someone who knew exactly what he wanted.

And the system, silent and watchful, took note.

The fight was only beginning.

But Arthur already knew one thing.

He was no longer prey.

This time, he was hunting with intent.
