Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Intent Without Reach II

He let them surround him. Then he vanished.

Intent Step burned through his legs as he slipped through a narrow gap in their formation. He reappeared behind them, already moving. Execution Intent followed without hesitation. His dagger cut low, then high, then straight through a spine.

Crack!. Thud!.

He didn’t stop.

The monsters closed in again, but he no longer felt boxed in. There was no pressure anymore. Only momentum.

They weren’t threats right now.

They were practice.

Targets that moved just enough to teach him something.

Each time he used a skill, he paid attention. Not to the kill. Not to the speed.

To the feeling.

Where the mana gathered.

Where it flowed.

Where it pushed back.

And the more he watched it, the more certain he became.

"I’m not wrong," he muttered. "This is the right direction."

Still, even as he cut through them, he knew this couldn’t go on forever.

The dungeon felt off.

The monsters were spawning too quickly. The numbers weren’t thinning. If anything, they were increasing. Every group he cleared only made room for more.

"This isn’t normal," Arthur said as he stepped through a swing and split a kobold from shoulder to chest. "Something’s feeding this."

He could stay here.

Farm intent points.

Grind himself down and walk out stronger.

But that wouldn’t solve the problem.

And if this was some kind of anomaly, ignoring it would be stupid.

He needed to find the source.

But before he could shift his focus, the dungeon demanded payment.

His legs burned.

Not the clean burn of effort.

The deep ache of overuse.

Intent Step drained stamina faster than he liked, and he had been relying on it heavily. Too heavily.

He landed from another step and staggered slightly before catching himself.

"Damn it," he hissed.

There it was.

The drag in his muscles.

The slight delay between thought and movement.

Sweat ran down his back, and his breathing grew heavier.

Another group rushed him, but he didn’t retreat.

Execution Intent flared again, mana pulling hard into his body.

But this time he stopped it.

Right in the middle of the pull.

The result was instant.

The mana recoiled.

It didn’t explode wildly. It didn’t spiral out of control.

It snapped outward.

Like pressure escaping from something sealed too tight.

The air around him distorted. A low vibration rolled through the chamber.

Then—

BOOM.

Stone cracked beneath his feet.

The skeletons closest to him shattered instantly, bones blasting outward as if struck by something massive and unseen. Kobolds were thrown back, tumbling across the floor, claws scraping uselessly at stone.

Arthur gasped.

The backlash hit him hard.

His vision blurred. Pain stabbed through his skull. His knees buckled, and he dropped to one knee, hand slamming against the floor to steady himself.

"Ah... damn," he groaned.

Then he laughed.

Breathless. Strained.

"That was stupid." And brilliant.

Even as his body protested, excitement surged through him.

He had felt it.

The shift.

The exact moment mana stopped flowing inward, and pushed outward instead.

"I get it," he whispered, head lowered as he fought to steady his breathing. "I’ve been pulling it in every time."

Every skill so far had strengthened him first.

Reinforced his body, sharpened his strike, Improved his movement.

Everything started inside.

But intent didn’t have to stop there.

It could move beyond him.

Arthur forced himself to stand. His ears were ringing. His limbs trembled.

He knew he was close to his limit.

But the realization was stronger than the exhaustion.

He had crossed something.

The system reacted.

Arthur let out a shaky laugh as light flickered across his vision.

"About time," he said quietly.

A new window appeared.

Arthur read it once.

Then again.

A grin spread across his face.

"So it really works," he murmured. "Mage or not... I’ll take it."

He didn’t get time to rest.

More movement in the shadows.

More monsters rushing in.

Relentless.

Unaware.

Arthur rolled his shoulders slowly as the new skill settled into him. The flow felt different now. Cleaner. More direct.

Mana gathered.

But it didn’t weigh him down.

It listened.

He raised his hand.

Focused, and Intent sharpened

BOOM.

A blast of condensed force erupted from his palm. It tore through the front line of skeletons, blasting them apart. Fragments slammed into the walls. Stone cracked from the impact.

Arthur laughed.

"Yeah," he said, eyes bright. "That’s more like it."

He stepped forward and snapped his hand out again.

BOOM.

Another blast punched through clustered enemies, ripping apart bone and sending kobolds flying backward like thrown dolls.

BOOM.

Each projection landed exactly where he decided.

No blade needed, no stepping into danger.

Just intent.

Clear and direct.

The battlefield changed instantly.

The monsters never even got close.

"Too slow," he called lightly as another group charged. "You’re really not built for this."

BOOM.

The chamber echoed with the force of it. Dust filled the air. Broken bodies covered the floor.

Arthur lowered his hand slowly.

He was breathing harder now.

But steady.

Satisfied.

"This," he said quietly, "is just the beginning."

The dungeon trembled faintly in response.

When the last monster fell, silence returned once more.

Arthur flexed his fingers.

His arm felt heavy. Tired in a way that told him he had pushed far enough for one lesson.

Manifest Intent lingered in his palm like leftover heat.

He raised his hand slightly and felt the mana respond again, easier this time.

"So that’s how you move," he muttered.
