Sports Medicine Master System-Chapter 45: Subscapularis Muscle
"Get out!"
Quinn roared.
The young man looked at Quinn, then at Chen Yu, and rattled off something in Spanish.
Quinn waved his hand impatiently, motioning for him to scram.
Only then did the young man leave.
Chen Yu was no stranger to guns. Chicago was infamous nationwide for its rampant gangs, and the neighborhood he grew up in wasn’t exactly a wealthy area. He’d seen his share of things like this.
But his door...
"I’ll pay for it," Quinn said immediately.
He stretched his back a bit. Miraculously, the pain was gone.
"Chen, that bastard Billings actually dared to call you a fraud. What a joke. He’s the quack." Quinn had clearly seen the news too.
Chen Yu waved his hand, gesturing for Quinn to sit up, then picked up his silver needles.
Quinn understood at once and briskly rolled up his pant leg.
As Chen Yu administered the acupuncture, he thought to himself, ’If even Quinn knows about this, then the people of Orlando must know too.’
Still, as the saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad publicity.
’Since I have some fame now, maybe I should advertise the clinic. Something like: "Come to Javier Clinic and receive the same treatment as superstar Grant Hill. Specializing in sprains, bruises, and physical rehabilitation."’
’I could even offer a discount on the treatment fee.’
’The main thing is to go for volume. Acupuncture, cupping, tui na massage, medicinal plasters... Four experience points per patient. Twenty-five patients, and I can trigger a treatment effect.’
’It would definitely be tiring, but at the hospital, I could only see a few patients a day.’
’Back at Jackson Memorial Hospital, working in the outpatient clinic, I’d see seven or eight patients a day at most, and I only had clinic duty two or three days a week.’
’So, getting enough experience points is what’s most important.’
"Chen, since Billings is gone, are you going to become the Magic’s team doctor? I saw on TV that Tracy is injured again. If he gets hurt again, we’re just going to lose even worse. You’re a good doctor, you could help the team." Turns out Quinn was quite a fan.
Chen Yu paused for a moment. ’Tracy McGrady is injured again?’
’It’s not a fake injury, is it? Monty told me that Billings and Rivers were the ones holding him back, not letting him play.’
This time, it wasn’t just Hill who had expressed dissatisfaction with the management. Tracy McGrady had also said some very cryptic things in an interview. He said, "I’m healthy. I should be on the court, not sitting on the sidelines. The team should be more pure."
The media interpreted this as dissatisfaction with the management’s various shenanigans.
The Magic only had these two superstars, and both were unhappy with the management. It was no wonder Gabriel was fired at lightning speed.
Shaking his head, Chen Yu said, "Not interested."
That’s what he said, but deep down, Chen Yu was considering it.
It wasn’t that his attitude toward the Magic had changed; it was for the sake of experience points.
Sports medicine wasn’t just about treating injuries. A larger part of it was preventing them from happening in the first place and maintaining a player’s health over the course of a long season.
The story of Bian Que and his two brothers illustrated this principle perfectly.
In his system, rehabilitation was only one part. There were still four other categories: emergency care, nutrition, psychology, and training.
His mastery level in these four categories was very low, hovering around 40 percent.
He needed practical experience to improve his mastery.
That would require him to be with the team, fully participating in their daily routines.
Besides, even if he wanted to be a team doctor, he still needed to accumulate experience to know how to actually do the job.
’We’ll see,’ he thought. ’In any case, I’m not going to actively apply for the Magic’s team doctor position.’
’Once I’ve healed Hill and Hardaway, my reputation will skyrocket. I won’t have to worry about finding a team then.’
After finishing the treatment, Chen Yu saw Quinn out.
But just as he was about to leave, Quinn lowered his voice and said, "Chen, because of you, I’ve been researching Chinese medicine lately. I read that there are drugs that can make... you know... that function stronger. Do you know anything about that? Could you prescribe something for me?"
Chen Yu looked at Quinn, not knowing whether to laugh or cry. ’I never would have guessed. You’re a real scholar, even started studying Chinese medicine.’
’But isn’t your field of study a little... off-track?’
"My recommendation is the little blue pill. Its effects are immediate." Chen Yu casually wrote out a prescription. The drug had just hit the market in the last couple of years and was only available by prescription.
Quinn gave an embarrassed laugh, took the prescription, and left.
After seeing Quinn off, Chen Yu thought for a moment, then wrote a sign and hung it outside the clinic.
He needed to hire a nurse, at the very least.
Preferably a professional one who could serve as an assistant.
If that wasn’t possible, an older lady who could shout at the patients a bit would also do.
He didn’t go through an agency. Too expensive.
He didn’t even know how long his clinic would stay open. A temporary hire would be fine.
He tidied up the clinic a bit more. By evening, still no patients had shown up. He wasn’t sure what the problem was.
Just as he was preparing to close up, a Mercedes suddenly pulled up out front. A middle-aged white man in a suit got out and walked over briskly.
"Hello, Chen. A pleasure to meet you." He smiled and offered a business card.
Chen Yu took it, glanced at it, and smiled.
John Weisbrod, the newly appointed General Manager of the Magic.
Handing the card back, Chen Yu said coldly, "What do you want?"
Weisbrod didn’t take it back. He adopted a very humble posture. "Chen, I’m very sorry for how Billings and Gabriel slandered you. Our entire team owes you an apology. Please rest assured, we will be publishing a formal apology to you in the Sentinel."
Chen Yu didn’t say anything, but ’A public apology in the paper... that’s a decent gesture,’ he thought.
Weisbrod continued, "As you know, Billings has been fired, and we’re now in need of a team doctor. And Tracy is injured. You’re handling Hill’s rehabilitation, and he has great faith in your medical skills. Even Anfernee is willing to accept your treatment. So, we’d like to ask you to handle Tracy’s treatment."
Chen Yu thought to himself, ’News travels fast. Hardaway just got to Orlando this morning, and you already know about it this afternoon?’
’Or did Hill tell you?’
’But being the team doctor is out of the question.’
’I may need the experience, but I have no goodwill toward the Magic’s management. The absolute most I could accept would be a medical consultant role.’
’And as soon as I find a suitable new team, I’m out of here.’
"Forget about being the team doctor, but I can help with Tracy. What’s wrong with him?" Chen Yu asked.
Weisbrod’s brow furrowed imperceptibly. When he came, he had thought Chen Yu would agree readily.
But considering all the dirty business before, it was normal that Chen Yu didn’t agree right away.
Weisbrod knew that rebuilding trust wouldn’t be easy, and Chen Yu’s willingness to treat Tracy McGrady was a good start. He sighed and said, "During the game against the Celtics the day before yesterday, he dunked over Antoine Walker, fell to the ground, and strained his subscapularis muscle."
"Where?"
Chen Yu blinked in surprise.
’This Tracy McGrady must have some bad luck. There are so many muscles in the shoulder. How did he manage to strain the subscapularis, of all things—the one hidden deep beneath a pile of other muscles on the inner surface of the shoulder blade?’
