Spirit's Ascension-Chapter 102— Unexpected save
The men in the room were also startled by the sudden shout as they also froze in their spot.
Luckily enough, Cole snapped out of it extremely quickly. Resulting in a split-second action.
He didn’t wait for anything and quickly darted away from his position.
Making sure his direction was completely opposite to the man’s current location.
Since he was already exposed, Cole didn’t care about concealment; he just ran as fast as he could.
The situation didn’t look too dire, so he didn’t activate any of his abilities. He only relied on his pure physical prowess.
Behind Cole, the man had already alerted the others, and quickly a search party was being formed behind him.
More men came out from almost every corner as the shout of the others alerted them.
The new people caused Cole to continuously change his direction to avoid the people.
The more he changed direction, the more he deviated from his original path.
Cole continuously changed his direction to try and correct it, but more people kept popping up.
Cole could feel himself running into a dead end since the path grew increasingly smaller and tighter.
"I am so cooked," Cole thought.
To increase Cole’s urgency, he could faintly hear voices of guards from his front too, and he could even begin seeing signs of light.
Guards were coming from the front; more guards are coming from his back.
Cole could only stop in his tracks and try to find a path out.
"Over here," Cole suddenly heard from the front.
He hesitated for a bit since he couldn’t get a full view of who was calling him over.
"The person doesn’t look too familiar."
Cole also hesitated because the Person seemed to be calling him towards his pursuers.
"If you don’t want to get caught, come now, and I assure you, you don’t want to," a feminine voice said again.
Then it clicked.
"That voice, it is familiar," Cole thought.
"It was the girl he had been looking for all over since that morning,"
After that, he didn’t hesitate; he rushed out and approached the girl.
"Follow me," The girl said while leading Cole.
Though Cole followed her closely behind, he still looked extremely skeptical.
They were heading straight towards the guards. Cole was shocked to see her bend down on the ground to open a hatch.
Under the light of the night, the hatch was almost indistinguishable from the ground.
Cole saw the girl climb downward through the dark stairs. He wasted no time and followed her straight into it before closing the hatch above him.
"Stay as quiet as possible," the girl said to him.
Cole obeyed instructions and made sure not to say anything or make any sound.
After about five minutes, Cole began hearing sounds of footsteps coming from above them.
"Did you guys see him?"
"No, we didn’t,what about you?"
"If we did, I wouldn’t ask you, idiot," the man berated.
"Sorry, boss. Sorry, boss," the other person apologized.
Cole listened to the men talk for a while more above him before scattering to continue the search.
The girl listened carefully and waited till she couldn’t hear anything anymore before saying to come.
"Let’s move."
The two of them moved lower through the steps until they reached an enlarged part below.
Cole looked around curiously as he tried to observe the surroundings with the light coming off the light bulbs lining the whole place.
"So this is the slums’ underground path," he thought.
While he was staying in the slums, he had a faint idea of the underground path, but he had never really entered or interacted with it.
It was a common path for gangs in the slum to go all around and smuggle all sorts of stuff that shouldn’t see the light of day.
Cole used to hear that the underground path of the slums was even larger than the ones above ground.
This place was home to some and everything to others.
"It seems this is where she stays; no wonder I couldn’t find her earlier, how am I supposed to when he was hiding down here?" Cole thought.
"Follow me as closely as possible; don’t wander off due to curiosity."
"You might die," She said.
Cole listened to her but didn’t really feel scared at her words.
"I am an Awakened-Level spiriter," he thought to himself.
The girl didn’t wait for Cole to respond before beginning the journey.
She started heading in a direction, and Cole could only follow behind her.
They moved and curved all around in the underground path, meeting a wide range of people.
From total drunkards to homeless people to scary-looking men.
They walked for a while more before the girl stopped to look at him.
"Don’t say anything to them," she said.
Cole turned to look at her with a confused expression, but he still nodded.
"But firstly, what’s your name?" Cole asked.
The girl looked slightly reluctant, but she still Ultimately replied.
"I am Laura."
"Laura, okay, noted."
Laura looked at Cole strangely but didn’t say anything to him. She only turned around and continued to move.
They arrived at an intersection where they turned around to see what looked like a makeshift door.
Laura didn’t stop; she only continued forward and went ahead to open the door.
The moment they entered that new space. A group of children came running straight at them.
"Sisterrrrrr," they screamed before jumping on her.
"Sister? that’s nice,’ Cole thought.
The children finally regained themselves when they noticed Cole behind Laura.
They observed him with an interrogative face before asking in a smooth, straight voice.
"Sister, who is that?" they asked.
"Is this your boyfriend?"
Cole was immediately taken aback by those words as he looked completely lost.
"uhh, boyfriend, aren’t you all too young for this?" Cole said.
Laura in front of him grew red in embarrassment as she screamed at the Children.
"Get back to bed, kids."
She then turned back to Cole and said,, with a serious face.
"Let’s start our conversation now."
"There’s a lot to talk about,"
