Special Forces Medic-Chapter 759 - 726: The Traitor
The North District Police Station was quite staffed today; however, even so, it was not bustling due to the relatively large courtyard. Whether on duty or not, everyone gathered in the station's main hall on this drizzly morning.
Since the new chief took office, the previous laziness was replaced by heavy tasks. The various table games, cards, and mahjong used to pass the time were all locked up in big boxes by Xu Ming. The utilization rate of police cars increased, and correspondingly, the cases they had to handle became much more complex, ranging from neighborhood disputes to petty thieves; they had to deal with even the smallest matters.
Xu Ming pulled out some old unresolved cases and started processing them again. He's busy, so his subordinates are busy too. It's rare to see anyone sitting idle during normal hours, let alone going over to neighbors to scrounge food.
However, today wasn't the regular weekly meeting time, yet everyone was called together, leaving many puzzled.
More than a dozen people sat in the hall waiting for Xu Ming to speak.
Fifteen minutes had passed since they gathered, and the leisurely chief was just drinking water after water, regardless of the whispering among his subordinates. He remained silent, using his small eyes to scrutinize them. Though there wasn't an intense atmosphere, it unconsciously made people somewhat fearful.
Raindrops pattered on the roof with a rhythmic sound, accentuating the already strange atmosphere to the extreme.
Just as everyone was speculating about what their chief planned to do today, Xu Ming slightly raised his head, his gaze changed, he coughed a few times, and finally placed the cup down and sat upright at his desk.
"Aren't you wondering why I gathered you all today?" He scanned the group and continued, "I'm very upset. Since working with all of you, I've always maintained good relationships, but unexpectedly there's a traitor among us."
Upon hearing this, the whispering grew louder, with everyone observing and speculating, yet no one dared to question directly.
"Just two nights ago, someone destroyed the evidence we retrieved from Bei Gong. I hope that person steps forward now so I might show some leniency, but if I find out who did it, I won't be polite."
Xu Ming had never treated his subordinates so harshly before, so when he lashed out, many fell silent.
"We all came here with you; we would never do such a thing." The speaker followed Xu Ming from the city, turning to a few behind him. "We dug those remains from Bei Gong bit by bit. If I find out any of you did this, I'll throw the culprits into Bei Gong's deep ravine." The threatening tone echoed in everyone's ears, yet whispers still permeated the hall.
"Chief, why do you think one of us did it? It's also possible those criminals sneaked in overnight to destroy the evidence and prevent us from finding solid proof."
"That's possible too." Xu Ming nodded, whispering without smiling. "The box containing the remains was in my office, and the door wasn't forced. If it was an outsider, it indicates we have an inside man." Another uproar followed; some were indignant while others nodded repeatedly, displaying a range of expressions and postures. "The box holding the remains was made with a special coating, and none of us should touch those bones. Anyone who did would have residue on their hands. You still have a chance now; if I find out, you know the consequences."
As soon as he finished speaking, Marshal took out a nifty tool resembling a flashlight. "Please spread your hands."
Xu Ming watched everyone's actions as Marshal inspected each hand. One person's face was sweating, his eyes darting around as he discreetly shifted to the side.
Xu Ming gave a signal to Marshal, who continued the examinations more swiftly after reaching the last position in the third row. Then someone couldn't take it anymore, leaping up and knocking over two people before bolting towards the exit.
"It's him!" Marshal shouted and skipped over chairs, chasing the fleeing figure, followed by Xu Ming closely. Despite being a bit chubby, after a few steps, he saw Marshal leap from a police car to the wall and over.
Then sounds of a scuffle erupted in the street, and Xu Ming leisurely walked to the door. The person pinned below looked robust but was no match for Marshal. He learned quite a bit from the boss, striking swiftly and decisively compared to before.
"Hit him a few times but don't kill him," Xu Ming called from behind. With Marshal's strength, it was surprising if he didn't end up killing the person.
"I'll let you run more!" Despite Xu Ming's warnings, Marshal still took a shot at the runner's face. When he flipped over the wall, he had twisted his ankle, and he took out this frustration on the person's head.
On affixing the handcuffs to the wrists, he dragged him off the ground, smirking at his defiant expression. "Cowardly fellow."
Xu Ming returned to the hall, where his subordinates still stood, not reacting even after the commotion. "Go back to your work; there's nothing for you here."
After dispersing the people, Xu Ming's mood soured. This was just one case. He wondered if there were accomplices among them, a troubling thought he hoped this incident would teach any concealed traitors a lesson.
"Lao Xu, how do we handle this guy?" Marshal brought him in.
"Turn him over to Director Ji; just hand him over."
"No need to add charges?"
"No, the boss said to take him directly. They'll know the message."
"Alright, I'll borrow a car then." Marshal didn't ask further. Since it was the boss's arrangement, it was undoubtedly followed. But how come he hadn't seen him recently? (To be continued.
